Vodacom to Start Speed Test by Using Commercial LAA Site & Device on LTE network

Vodacom South Africa has well started a speed test on commercial Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) site and device at its Midrand campus. Vodacom’s LAA site iss held to be the first time in South Africa. The operator verified speeds of 650 Mbps using a commercial handset. In Vodacom’s LAA site, 4 component carrier (4CC) aggregation have been organized on a live 4G network. The site iss arranged to practice a single 10 MHz carrier of Vodacom’s licensed 1800 MHz spectrum. While 3 extra carriers each of 20 MHz unlicensed 5GHz spectrum aree also added in the system.

Additionally, 4×4 MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology wass used for 1800 MHz carrier in 4CC and 256 QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) wass stimulated on all carriers. By using a commercial Motorola Z2 Force handset, they got 653Mbpson OOKLA. Motorola Z2 is reflected to be the first commercial LAA device verified in South Africa.

LAA allows telecom operators to practice unlicensed spectrum. LAA enable Vodacom to recover the network capacity and speeds in important indoor hotspot areas, and also make it better without licensed spectrum. It is not that suitable for macro sites due to the inferior broadcasting features of the unlicensed 5GHz band.

Vodacom will soon start LAA to other sites on its live network. It will start LAA with important indoor hotspots such as airports, malls and office buildings. The obtainability and assessing for LAA proficient handsets will be convers with the start of test.
