Ufone Extends 3G To Nine Cities
Having beaten its rivals to the punch in being the first to launch 3G services in Pakistan, Pakistan Telecommunications Mobile Ltd (PTML, trading under the Ufone banner) has expanded 3G services to nine cities. Ufone’s next generation platform is now available in Islamabad, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Karachi, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala and Sialkot, passing the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s (PTA’s) stipulation that 3G licensees must provide services in at least five cities within nine months. Ufone’s Norwegian-backed rival Telenor is expected to inaugurate its 3G network soon and is currently offering trial 3G services in Islamabad, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Peshawar. Russian-backed Mobilink is also running 3G trials in these five cities, as we well as Multan, Faisalabad and Quetta, but is yet to commercially launch its network.
