Twitter Launches Mobile Music Service

Twitter has launched its anticipated move into the music market, with a new service that tracks Tweets sent by users to detect and surface the most popular tracks and emerging artists.

The company is also launching new profiles for verified musicians so that fans can see which music artists they follow and listen to songs by those artists.

Both functions are available through an iPhones app that the company has launched.

The songs on Twitter #music currently come from three sources: iTunes, Spotify or Rdio. By default, you will hear previews from iTunes when exploring music in the app. Subscribers to Rdio and Spotify can log in to their accounts to enjoy full tracks that are available in those respective catalogs.

The company confirmed that it is in talks with other music labels.

The iPhone app is available currently, and a new website is being rolled out over the next day or two.

The service is available in the USA, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Over time, the service will also be available to Android as well as to more countries.
