Taiwan to auction 4G licenses by end-2013

Taiwan’s National Communications Commission (NCC) is planning to auction 4G licenses by the end of next year. However, the licenses will come with a condition that the license holder cannot offer unlimited data plans. 3G operators currently offer unlimited data plans, which cause some 15 percent of users to occupy 60 percent of the bandwidth, while the remaining 85 percent pay a disproportionate fee for internet use. The licenses will be technology neutral and may be issued at a lower cost to operators with ideas for Taiwan’s creative industries.
