Mobilink Partners with DAWN to Keep Subscribers Informed with the Latest News for Free

Mobilink wins ‘8th Annual CSR Excellence Awards’

Mobilink won top honors at the 8th Annual CSR Excellence Awards 2014, which were conducted by the CSR Association of Pakistan. The telco received the award under the ‘Innovation’ category for its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities which were greatly endorsed as one that leverage business strengths to offer high impact social solutions.  

The judges were particularly impressed by Mobilink’s mLiteracy program that provides good quality education to the rural females of Pakistan. The telco uses its business model to provide education over cell phones to learners not served by traditional education channels in association with UNESCO and other reputable international partners. In so far, the mLiteracy program has empowered 6,150 learners in its initial stage. Apart from global accreditation, this initiative won the GSMA Award at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona.

Representatives from Mobilink also spoke at the award ceremony about the company’s planned Child Helpline Initiative, which is a part of VimpelCom’s, Mobilink’s parent company, partnership with GSMA. Under the initiative, Mobilink plans to provide a countrywide helpline to provide support to vulnerable children. The service will see Mobilink partner with institution(s) that have the thematic expertise in the area. Mobilink will also work to advocate the service and the cause with an aim to raise awareness amongst communities. 

Mobilink’s CR portfolio concentrates work and resources on 4 key areas of distress: Education, Health, Environment and Emergency Relief.  The telco has won numerous awards commending these initiatives in the past as well.

Mobilink Launches Lumia 435 and 532

Mobilink in an exclusive collaboration with Microsoft has launched 3G enabled Windows 8.1 Lumia 435 and 532 for customers. In line with Mobilink’s strategy of providing quality devices at the most affordable rates, the phone will provide customers the ability to experience Mobilink’s 3G services. With every purchase of LUMIA 435 and 532, Mobilink will provide its users 12 GB data, 12000 Mobilink minutes and SMS every month for a period of 6 months.

Lumia 435 is a 3G enabled Windows 8.1 handset with a 4 inch display along with 1.2 GHz dual-Core processor while Lumia 532 also has a 4 inch display along with a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon quad-core processor. LUMIA handsets have Microsoft’s latest software with innovative apps such as Cortana, OneNote, OneDrive, Office and skype with a front-facing camera video call support. The Lumia handsets will be available nationwide at all Mobilink Business Centers. Pakistan Adds 11 mln New Mobile Phone Subscribers in 2014

Pakistan added 11.04 million new mobile phone subscribers in 2014. By comparison, in 2013, the overall number of mobile telephony subscriber additions stood at 8.8 million, as data released by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). Zong attracted the largest number of mobile phone customers in 2014, by adding 6.15 million new subscribers, followed by Telenor with 3.05 million customers adds, and Mobilink (1.64 million user adds). Pakistan had 139.9 million active SIMs at 30 June 2014, up from 128.25 million in June 2013.

14 Illustrious Years of Rashid Khan in Various Leadership Roles

Jeffrey Hedberg has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Mobilink Pakistan. Jeffrey Hedberg succeeds Rashid Khan, who has decided to retire after tenure of over 14 years in leading positions with Mobilink and Banglalink. Rashid Khan will continue to perform the duties as the CEO of Mobilink until Jeffrey assumes office in Pakistan, which is expected in early August.

Rashid Khan is a veteran of the telecommunication industry and has held several management positions within the cellular business arena in the emerging markets for the past 20 years. Rashid Khan was appointed the CEO of Mobilink in 2008, upon his return from Bangalink where he led the business as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. Prior to that, for almost 15 years, he worked in Silicon Valley for various international companies where he acquired extensive working experience in the technology sector and was awarded patents for his inventions.

Mobilink, under the supervision of Rashid Khan as CEO and President, maintained its position as the leading telecommunication service provider. Mobilink’s subscriber base grew from 30 million to 38 million as it launched 3G services in all major cities across Pakistan. Other major achievements include re-branding to reflect a youthful and fresh business ideology and winning the GSMA Global Mobile Award for its SMS Based Literacy program. 

3G Launch Expected for 10 May in Pakistan

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is planning to award the 3G and 4G licenses at a ceremony in Islamabad on 10 May. Mobilink, Telenor Pakistan and Pakistan Telecommunication Mobile Ltd (PTML), which operates under the ‘Ufone’ brand, all won 3G concessions and are awaiting the official award of their licenses before launching commercial 3G services, although Ufone and Telenor have begun offering the service on a trial basis. China Mobile Pakistan (CMPak), which offers services under the ‘Zong’ name, won a 3G license at the auction, as well as the only 4G concession to be awarded. According to inside reports, if the authorizations are handed out as expected on 10 May, the operators will launch their 3G offerings the same day.

PTA Announces Qualified Bidders

In accordance with the timelines mentioned in Information Memorandum (IM) for the Spectrum Auction of Next Generation Mobile Services in Pakistan, PTA has announced the names of the qualified bidders for the auction to be held on April 23, 2014.

PTA has received bids from four existing Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) on April 14, 2014 for 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz Spectrum.  After scrutiny of submitted bids all four operators China Mobile (Zong), Mobilink, PTML (Ufone) and Telenor Pakistan have qualified for the bidding.

 

97% of Warid Customers Happy With Network Quality

Some 97 percent of Warid Telecom customers said they are happy with the network quality (54% very happy and 43% somewhat happy), followed by 95 percent of Mobilink customers (56% very happy and 39% somewhat happy), according to a Gilani Research Foundation survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan. Only 2 percent of Warid users said they were not happy while 4 percent of Mobilink users said they were unhappy. Some 37 percent of Telenor users were very happy, 57 percent were somewhat happy and 7 percent were unhappy. Zong followed with 43 percent of users saying they were very happy, 48 percent who said they were happy, and 8 percent of respondents were unhappy with the network. Some 47 percent of Ufone users were very happy, 42 percent were happy and 10 percent were not happy at all.

The VimpelCom Group CEO, Jo Lunder is visited Pakistan to discuss future business prospects as the telecommunication sector enters a new phase of growth and development.  During his visit, Jo Lunder met with the President of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain, Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, Minister of State for IT and Telecom Ms. Anusha Rahman, Chairman PTA Syed Ismail Shah and senior management of Mobilink, and shared Group’s vision for the region and reaffirmed its long term commitment to Pakistan. Earlier in 2012, VimpelCom committed to heavy investments in Pakistan which paved the way for introducing next generation mobile services in the country.

This investment has been utilized at various fronts to ensure the best Customer Experience for Mobilink customers and has consolidated its leadership position in Pakistan with the deployment of a state-of-the-art next-generation mobile network.

Jo Lunder re-affirmed VimpelCom’s commitment to the country during his meetings with the President and Prime Minister of Pakistan; he said,

Jo Lunder’s visit to Pakistan follows a recent meeting with Minister of State for IT & Telecom, Ms. Anusha Rehman during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February 2014. Both the Minister and the VimpelCom Group CEO had a discussion on the future of the telecom industry and the potential for new opportunities in the market.
