DoT Approves Qualcomm’s Sale of WBSPL Stake

India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has approved Qualcomm’s sale of its stake in a wireless broadband company to Bharti Airtel. DoT had sought the legal opinion of the law ministry on the sale of the stake in Wireless Business Service Private (WBSPL) as it would bring Qualcomm’s stake to below 26 percent. Qualcomm secured spectrum in in four circles in 2010 and the auction rules at the time stated that a successful bidder must hold at least 26 percent in the licensee company. The law ministry says that this requirement is only valid until the fees are paid and the spectrum is allocated.
