Econet to Use Wi-Fi Hotspots to Ease 3G Congestion

Zimbabwean cellco Econet Wireless is reportedly planning to introduce a number of Wi-Fi hotpots in a bid to ease congestion on its 3G mobile broadband networks.Subscribers using smartphones will have the option to switch from their mobile broadband connections to Wi-Fi when they are within range of a Wi-Fi hotspot, and the access will be priced at the same rate as their mobile broadband tariff. The company is expected to start field trials of the service this week, and subscribers wishing to participate will reportedly be given a full list of the Wi-Fi hotspot locations. It remains unclear whether Econet will be providing an application to notify – or automatically switch – users when they are in close proximity to a Wi-Fi- hotspot, however.
