Sony Mobile Considering Launching a Microsoft Based Smartphone

Sony Mobile has confirmed that it is still in talks with Microsoft that could see it launching Windows Phone OS based smartphones in the future.

Pierre Perron, head of Sony Mobile Europe, said that the smartphone manufacturer doesn’t want to be locked into a single smartphone OS. The company is currently exclusively an Android handset manufacturer.

We are continuing our discussions with other partners, including Microsoft, as part of our partnership with this company on the broader Sony spectrum.”

There have been rumors for some weeks now that Sony Mobile is working on a Windows Phone based device, as Microsoft is said to be looking at widening the number of manufacturers who support its platform ahead of its takeover of Nokia’s handset business.

“We are exploring this as part of our discussion in mobile space too. One thing is using the platform [Windows Phone] itself, and another is ‘what can we deliver on top of it’?” he added.

Sony Mobile last launched a Microsoft based device in 2008.
