Policy Directives for 3G Auction Delivered to PTA
After getting the approval from the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom has issued a policy directive to PTA regarding Spectrum Auction for Third Generation Mobile Services in Pakistan.
PTA has been entrusted to carry out the whole process in the most clear and transparent manner. PTA has also been asked to hire the services of a consultant to move ahead with the desired objective.
After getting the directive from the Ministry, PTA has informed the concerned parties in the auction that the process will be given the utmost priority and it is expected to be completed by the end of February, 2014. PTA also informed that Ministry of Finance has estimated around PKR 120 billion in the shape of auction fee of this transaction in its budgetary estimates.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has approved policy directives for auction of next generation 3G mobile services which will fetch multi billion dollars for the country.
This transaction will be accomplished by February. The premier has approved technology neutral policy which means that Third Generation (3G) or 4G could be brought in to boost voice and data communication at an accelerated pace in the country.
Now the PTA has been asked to appoint a consultant and move ahead with the desired objective. The regulator, PTA, has informed the authorities concerned that auction will be completed by end of February as Ministry of Finance had estimated around Rs120 billion in shape of auction fee of this transaction in its budgetary estimates.
Ministry of State for Information Technology Anusha Rehman has also confirmed issuance of directive while talking to a local newspaper she said,
Yes, we have sent approved policy directives to the PTA for implementation.”
The policy directive was issued by the ministry to PTA on 7th October, 2013, according to which the allocation of the spectrum will be technology neutral and auction will be open for new entrants as well. Also, auction winners will encourage and facilitate local manufacturing, transfer of technology and research and innovation in telecom sector of Pakistan.
The hiring of an international well reputed consultant is expected in next few weeks along with the finalization of mode of transaction.
