NTT DOCOMO Confirms Large-Scale VoLTE Launch
NTT DOCOMO, Japan’s leading cellco in terms of subscribers, and US-based Qualcomm Technologies have teamed up for a large-scale commercial voice-over-Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) launch in Japan. According to a joint press release, the deployment features a VoLTE solution based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, with a fully featured multimode integrated VoLTE modem and IMS software solution, which supports SMS, high definition (HD) voice, video telephony and single radio voice call continuity (SRVCC); the latter provides a smooth handover from LTE to 3G without dropped calls.

“NTT DOCOMO has launched the leading edge voice and video service, allowing VoLTE service to be [made] available commercially nationwide in Japan as of June. With this comprehensive, stable and extensively tested chipset with IMS software solution, we are able to provide leading edge VoLTE services on mobile phones from several manufacturers to our customers.”
As at the end of June 2014 Japanese equipment vendor NEC Corporation announced that it had contributed to the introduction of NTT DOCOMO’s VoLTE services by providing core network and wireless base station devices.
