Djuice, Qualcomm Conduct Mobile App Development Workshop
Djuice has launched a series of free mobile application development workshops for university students. As part of the initiative Qualcomm, a wireless technology and services provider, held their first workshop at a local hotel. Djuice is running the workshops to help students prepare for the Apportunity 2012 contest ‘APP Mein Kitna Hai Dum!’ launched earlier this month by providing them hands-on experience of app development. The workshop was attended by students from Iqra University, NUST School of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Comsats, FAST, and International Islamic University; it provided training on Augmented Reality technology and how it can be integrated into mobile apps. Azerfon to launch LTE base station in Baku before Eurovision

Azerbaijan’s regions outrun Baku on 3G Internet penetration
Azerbaijan has seen a decline in the level of Internet penetration through dial-up technology Dial Up to 23%.The recent survey of the Azerbaijan Marketing Society has shown that the number of Dial Up users in Baku is 16% and in the regions 28%. The penetration rate of broadband Internet based on ADSL technology is 42%. Out of the total number of ADSL users, 44% are concentrated in Baku and 39% in the regions. Azerbaijan mobile operators sign protocol on LTE
Azerbaijan mobile operators Bakcell, Nar Mobile and Azercell have signed a protocol on the introduction of LTE. The coordination of frequencies will be carried out by the operators themselves under the protocol. Ali Abbasov, the Minister of ICT, said that LTE licences won’t be necessary for the deployment of LTE networks. Verizon enhances 4G LTE network coverage in Vernon
Verizon Wireless has recently activated new 4G LTE service in Vernon, Connecticut. The investment expands Verizon’s 4G LTE coverage in Vernon along Interstate 84, Route 30 and in the vicinities of Bolton and Tunnel Roads. Verizon’s 4G LTE customers in the coverage area should experience average speeds of 5 to 12 Mbps for download and 2 to 5 Mbps for upload. Bharti Airtel to launch TD LTE 4G Services
Bharti Airtel will launch TD LTE services in Kolkata. Airtel will become the first telecom operator to launch high-speed 4G broadband in India. Bharti Airtel recently has selected ZTE Corporation as its telecom equipment partner for the 4G network launch in Kolkata. Airtel Launches First LTE Services in Kolkata
Bharti Airtel has launched the country’s first commercial LTE service in Kolkata. Vivo rolls out countrywide HSPA+ service
Brazilian mobile operator Vivo Participacoes, which is controlled by Telefonica of Spain, is expanding its HSPA+ coverage across the whole of the country. Last November Vivo had launched its first HSPA+ service in metropolitan Sao Paulo. T-Mobile CR continues to improve 3G network coverage.
T-Mobile Czech Republic has announced that efforts to improve its 3G mobile network coverage and quality are continuing apace and that as a result, its UMTS-FDD network now covers more than 83% of the population via 2,550 transmitters serving over 560 cities. Chinese companies interested in Thai 3G licences
Chinese companies have expressed interest in bidding for 3G licences in Thailand. Turkcell confirms 100Mbps ‘on the go’ in LTE trial
Turkish mobile giant Turkcell has successfully tested Long Term Evolution (LTE) ‘on the go’ in Istanbul, with transmission speeds reaching 100Mbps. In conjunction with equipment vendor Ericsson, Turkcell tested 4G on a 3.3km line between its operation centers in Kartal and Maltepe. Telus to invest US$9.23 million in North Shore to expand LTE
Canadian mobile operator Telus will invest CAD 9.2 million in the North Shore to expand LTE to the community and introduce Optik TV to even more West and North Vancouver homes in British Columbia. Movicel deploys commercial LTE 1.8 GHz network in Angola
African operator Movicel has launched of commercial 1.8GHz FDD LTE network in the Cabinda province of Angola. LTE coverage growing rapidly according to survey
According to a survey by Bitkom, a technology trade association, Germany boasts more than 3,000 LTE base stations covering approximately 13 million households and serving around 150,000 subscribers. TIM stages LTE demonstration in Milan
Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) is currently in the midst of staging a week-long trial of its in-deployment Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in Milan. China Mobile’s 3G Subscriber Base Nears 60 Million
China Mobile has reported a 3.5% rise in its first-quarter profits of RMB 27.8 billion. Revenues also rose, by 7.8% to RMB 127.5 billion, while EBITDA was up by 4.5% to RMB 60.7 billion. The company added 17.63 million net new customers, taking its total base to 667.2 million. Of the total, 59.56 million are using the company’s TD-SCDMA based 3G network. Macedonia’s VIP Mobile completes successful 3G tests
Macedonian wireless operator Mobilkom Macedonia (VIP Mobile), a unit of Telekom Austria controlled Mobilkom Austria, has released a press release confirming the successful completion of technical trials of its 3G mobile network and services. The cellco went on to say that in the wake of the trials, it has launched legal proceedings to secure formal regulatory approval for the commercial use of its 3G network. Hutch Lanka launched 3G
Hutchison Telecommunications Lanka (Hutch) has launched commercial 3G services based on a HSDPA/HSUPA network covering Sri Lanka’s Western province including capital Colombo. Umniah on track for 3G launch
Bahrain backed telco Umniah is close to completing the construction of its 3G network in Jodan. Umniah has signed up Chinese vendors ZTE and Huawei for the rollout, and is on track for its scheduled H1 2012 commercial launch. Umniah will be the last of the kingdom’s three cellcos to launch 3G services, behind Zain and Jordan Telecom Group (Orange Jordan). Umniah had delayed the deployment of its own 3G infrastructure, waiting for certain conditions in the market to improve, such as handset cost and availability of local content. Russia Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has test launched 4G services in Moscow. The company has reportedly spent USD100 million on the deployment of LTE infrastructure so far. Open Mobile’s LTE services go live with Novatel’s modem and MiFi device
Puerto Rican cellular operator Open Mobile has introduced commercial LTE mobile broadband services by offering 4G internet access via LTE-enabled USB modem and mobile hotspot devices supplied by Novatel Wireless. Cellco introduced Puerto Ricans to the Ovation MC 551 modem and the Novatel Wireless MiFi 4510 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot, offering them the convenience of portable Wi-Fi access at lightening fast speeds. Telstra to expand LTE services in Newcastle
Australian Telco Telstra is set to expand LTE roll out in Newcastle which will see 4G mobile coverage extending into a number of new suburbs. The upcoming expansion would bring 4G coverage to suburbs such as Broadmeadow, Callaghan, Georgetown, Jesmond, Kotara East, Lambton, Mayfield, Mayfield West, Waratah and Waratah West. 4G coverage expansion is scheduled to commence shortly and when completed later this year would more than double the 4G coverage available in the Newcastle area. AMC expands 3G population coverage to 95 percent
Albanian operator AMC’s 3G network has achieved a coverage of 95 percent of the country’s population at the conclusion of the first quarter. Since the beginning of January, when the company officially launched its high-speed data transmission services under the HSPA+ standard (Evolved High-Speed Packet Access), it provided 3G coverage in all main cities and districts’ centres throughout the country. The company aims to expand 3G coverage to 99 percent of the population in a few more months. 3G subs approach 13 million
The number of third-generation 3G subscribers in Vietnam has reached approximately 12.8 million. According to the ministry, mobile network operators Viettel, Vinaphone, MobiFone, Hanoi Telecom (Vietnamobile) and EVN Telecom have between them deployed around 33,700 3G base transceiver stations (BTS) across the country. Vinaphone was the first to launch W-CDMA services, in October 2009, followed by MobiFone two months later, Viettel in March 2010 and state-owned EVN Telecom (now part of Viettel) the following June. The latest cellco to launch 3G services is Vietnamobile, which introduced commercial services in December 2011. ZTE has signed a network expansion agreement with Hi3G Sweden worth US$74 million. Nokia Siemens has won a LTE rollout contract from Singapore’s StarHub, which will be refarming its 1800MHz GSM band to carry LTE services. The first phase of StarHub’s LTE network is expected to go live by the end of 2012, covering key business areas. As part of the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will also modernize StarHub’s GSM network. Nokia Siemens Networks will provide StarHub its Single RAN platform which will enable StarHub to run GSM and LTE concurrently on the 1800 MHz band. ZTE has reported operating revenue of US$2.96 billion in Q1 2012, an increase of 29.46% over the same period last year. Nokia Siemens Networks has announced that Croatia’s Hrvatski Telekom has launched LTE services in the cities of Zagreb, Rijeka, Osijek and Split.
