Kenyan mobile giant Safaricom and Qualcomm have announced the launch of an ‘Experiential Tour’ for 3G products and services in Kenya.  In Europe the LTE coverage is rapidly growing in Germany and Vodafone Hungary is launching   DC-HSPA+ network. NSN has won an LTE contract from Japan’s Softbank Mobile where as ZTE has won a contract with China Telecom to build an IMS network covering 12 Chinese provinces, projected to be the world’s largest.
In Pakistan operator have started to show interest in 3G networks and warid among them is keen to acquire a 3G licence. Telenor Djuice has launched a series of free mobile application (‘app’) development workshops for university students. As part of the initiative Qualcomm, a wireless technology and services provider, held their first workshop at a local hotel.

Djuice, Qualcomm Conduct Mobile App Development Workshop

Djuice has launched a series of free mobile application development workshops for university students. As part of the initiative Qualcomm, a wireless technology and services provider, held their first workshop at a local hotel. Djuice is running the workshops to help students prepare for the Apportunity 2012 contest ‘APP Mein Kitna Hai Dum!’ launched earlier this month by providing them hands-on experience of app development. The workshop was attended by students from Iqra University, NUST School of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Comsats, FAST, and International Islamic University; it provided training on Augmented Reality technology and how it can be integrated into mobile apps. Ziad Matar, Qualcomm’s Senior Director and Head of Middle East and Central Asia Region also addressed the participants. Djuice and Qualcomm have planned to conduct more workshops in Lahore and Karachi over the next two months.

Azerfon to launch LTE base station in Baku before Eurovision

Azerbaijani cellco Azerfon has announced that it has deployed its first Long Term Evolution (LTE) base station in the capital city of Baku. The base station will be used to provide coverage during the Eurovision Song Contest which is due to be held at the end of May. The cellco says it will introduce a special tariff package on the eve of the contest.

Warid is keen to acquire 3G license

Warid top management has decided to participate in the upcoming auction of 3G license in order to provide advanced services to their customers in the future. The 3G technology will definitely provide an edge to operators among the market players of the sector particularly for attracting new customers into the base, while retaining its existing base, a source in the industry said quoting company’s official. There are some nine telecommunication companies likely to participate in bidding in the current year for 3G telecom licenses in Pakistan. Amongst the existing players, Warid Telecom is keen to get the 3G license besides Mobilink, Telenor, Ufone and Zong.

Azerbaijan’s regions outrun Baku on 3G Internet penetration

Azerbaijan has seen a decline in the level of Internet penetration through dial-up technology Dial Up to 23%.The recent survey of the Azerbaijan Marketing Society has shown that the number of Dial Up users in Baku is 16% and in the regions 28%. The penetration rate of broadband Internet based on ADSL technology is 42%. Out of the total number of ADSL users, 44% are concentrated in Baku and 39% in the regions. The penetration rate of mobile Internet (3G technology) is 20% around the country, while 20% out the total number of users of this type of connection to the network is concentrated in Baku and 21% in the country’s regions.

Tele2 Kazakhstan to launch 3G services in Kzylorda

Mobile operator Tele2 Kazakhstan has launched 3G services in the Kzylorda region 14 April. The service was started in the city of Turkestan by 15 April. An area comprising 70 percent of the region’s population will be covered by the 3G network.

Azerbaijan mobile operators sign protocol on LTE

Azerbaijan mobile operators Bakcell, Nar Mobile and Azercell have signed a protocol on the introduction of LTE. The coordination of frequencies will be carried out by the operators themselves under the protocol. Ali Abbasov, the Minister of ICT, said that LTE licences won’t be necessary for the deployment of LTE networks. The Ministry has set a three-month deadline for the launch of LTE services.

Nar Mobile to expand 3G to subway stations

Azerbaijan mobile operator Nar Mobile will offer 3G services at all subway stations shortly, in addition to the 2G services it already offers in those locations. Nar Mobile provides 3G service at a maximum speed of 14.4 Mbps.

Azercell launches indoor 3G network at Four Seasons

Azerbaijan mobile operator Azercell has launched a multi-band indoor network. The network at the Four Seasons hotel in Baku supports GSM and 3G services for subscribers of all mobile operators working in Azerbaijan. The new system is based on equipment from Powerwave Technologies.

Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 based smartphone coming to India

The first Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 mobile processor running smartphone may come to India soon; it will be the HTC One S or One XL. HTC One S is expected to launch in May. HTC One S features 4.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen display with 960×540 pixel resolution natively and built using Corning Gorilla Glass. HTC One S accommodates a new dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8260A mobile processor with Adreno 225 graphics. Yet another Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 mobile processor based smartphone HTC One XL is expected to launch in India but only in the second half of this year.

Telekom rolls out UMTS mobile data services in Melle

Telekom Deutschland has rolled out UMTS mobile internet services in Melle in Lower Saxony. The service supports data rates of up to 42.2 Mbps and allows residents to go online from their home PCs via the UMTS data network using s UMTS stick. A day pass costs EUR 4.95, with subscriptions for heavy users available from EUR 29.95 per month.

Verizon enhances 4G LTE network coverage in Vernon

Verizon Wireless has recently activated new 4G LTE service in Vernon, Connecticut. The investment expands Verizon’s 4G LTE coverage in Vernon along Interstate 84, Route 30 and in the vicinities of Bolton and Tunnel Roads. Verizon’s 4G LTE customers in the coverage area should experience average speeds of 5 to 12 Mbps for download and 2 to 5 Mbps for upload. Verizon has invested over USD 3 billion into its New England network since 2000, including more than USD 297 million in 2011 alone, to increase network coverage and capacity. Verizon’s 4G LTE network covers more than 200 million people in 203 markets across the US.

4M Wireless licenses LTE protocol stack to Wuxi DSP.

4M Wireless (Luton, England) has licensed its Terminal LTE protocol stack to Wuxi DSP Technologies Inc. (Wuxi, China) and its subsidiary company Optimum Semiconductor Technologies Inc. (Tarrytown, New York). The agreement will enable Wuxi DSP to develop the LTE-TDD trunk communications for the wireless infrastructure of private network markets in China. The Broadband Digital Trunking Standard is aimed for industrial applications of private network system in China. It provides dispatching assistance for emergencies such as natural disasters and other public security occurrences. Rollout of the Broadband Digital Trunking Standard in China is supported by the government.

Bharti Airtel to launch TD LTE 4G Services

Bharti Airtel will launch TD LTE services in Kolkata. Airtel will become the first telecom operator to launch high-speed 4G broadband in India. Bharti Airtel recently has selected ZTE Corporation as its telecom equipment partner for the 4G network launch in Kolkata. The TD/LTE service launch will offer high speed wireless internet access that can support bandwidth intensive applications, support video streaming and high-definition video conferencing. Bharti Airtel will deploy its TD-LTE network in the 2.3 GHz frequency band allocated by the Indian government for broadband wireless access technologies.

Airtel Launches First LTE Services in Kolkata

Bharti Airtel has launched the country’s first commercial LTE service in Kolkata. Airtel’s 4G network was launched by Mr. Kapil Sibal, Hon’ble Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India. In 2010, Airtel had successfully bid for BWA license spectrum in Kolkata, Karnataka, Punjab and Maharashtra (excluding Mumbai) circles. Airtel is currently working towards rolling out mobile broadband networks in other circles. Airtel had previously awarded network deployment contracts to ZTE for Kolkata and Nokia Siemens Networks for Maharashtra.

Vodafone Hungary launches DC-HPSA+ technology

Vodafone Hungary has doubled maximum data transmission rates on parts of its network from 21Mbps to 42Mbps, through the deployment of dual-carrier, evolved high speed packet access (DC-HSPA+) technology. In the initial phase, the cellco will offer DC-HSPA+ in 101 localities, including main cities, thanks to the upgrade – which was carried out by Huawei.

Vivo rolls out countrywide HSPA+ service

Brazilian mobile operator Vivo Participacoes, which is controlled by Telefonica of Spain, is expanding its HSPA+ coverage across the whole of the country. Last November Vivo had launched its first HSPA+ service in metropolitan Sao Paulo. The cellco debuted its ‘Live Plus 3G’ offering with prices ranging from BRL99.50 (USD55.08) per month for existing Speedy broadband customers, rising to BRL200 for those who do not subscribe to one of its high speed internet services. The operator promises maximum download speeds of 21Mbps, compared to the previous upper limit of 7.2Mbps.

T-Mobile CR continues to improve 3G network coverage.

T-Mobile Czech Republic has announced that efforts to improve its 3G mobile network coverage and quality are continuing apace and that as a result, its UMTS-FDD network now covers more than 83% of the population via 2,550 transmitters serving over 560 cities. The cellco is also improving the end user’s experience, it said, by enabling them free access to its Network Radar applications, which allows them to verify the quality of internet access being received. The app is being offered in collaboration with the Dutch company Oberon Interactive.

LG to test 4G network in Portugal

LG is preparing to launch the first equipment that will take advantage of the introduction of the 4G mobile network in Portugal. Rostelecom agrees to use scartel’s LTE network in Russia

Russian telecommunications operator Rostelecom (RTKM.RS) has signed an agreement that will give it access to broadband provider Scartel’s high-speed long-term evolution mobile network. Test services are expected to begin on July 1. Rostelecom intends to start providing commercial services using an LTE network in the Moscow region from Sept. 1. These services will be rolled out in other Russian regions at a later stage.

Safaricom, Qualcomm team up for ‘3G Experiential Tour’

Kenyan mobile giant Safaricom and Qualcomm have announced the launch of an ‘Experiential Tour’ for 3G products and services in Kenya, which will take place between 14 April and 31 June. The roadshow, which will call at shopping malls, sporting events and universities in Nairobi, Mombasa, Thika, Nakuru and Kisumu, and allow customers to test drive 3G devices and experience rich content and faster internet access enabled by 3G enabled mobile smartphones, PCs and laptops. Kenya’s first 3G network was launched by Safaricom in May 2008, and the cellco had an estimated 3G subscriber base of 5.2 million at 31 December 2011, up from four million one year earlier.

Chinese companies interested in Thai 3G licences

Chinese companies have expressed interest in bidding for 3G licences in Thailand. Western companies are avoiding the Thai telecoms sector because of concern over the Foreign Business Act and regulations governing foreign shareholder control. The watchdog expects to finalize the terms for an auction of concessions in the 2100MHz band by the third quarter of 2012, as well as drafting new regulations regarding foreign ownership. State-owned operator TOT is currently the sole holder of 2100MHz wireless spectrum.

Turkcell confirms 100Mbps ‘on the go’ in LTE trial

Turkish mobile giant Turkcell has successfully tested Long Term Evolution (LTE) ‘on the go’ in Istanbul, with transmission speeds reaching 100Mbps. In conjunction with equipment vendor Ericsson, Turkcell tested 4G on a 3.3km line between its operation centers in Kartal and Maltepe. During the presentation HD video content was downloaded and uploaded simultaneously, while a third HD quality video was viewed online without interruption. Previously, in July 2009, Turkcell achieved downlink transmission speeds of 168Mbps in a laboratory-based demonstration.

Telus to invest US$9.23 million in North Shore to expand LTE

Canadian mobile operator Telus will invest CAD 9.2 million in the North Shore to expand LTE to the community and introduce Optik TV to even more West and North Vancouver homes in British Columbia. Telus’ CAD 9.2 million investments will extend its LTE network to the North Shore. Telus’ LTE network supports manufacturers’ rated peak download speeds of up to 75 Mbps, with an expected average of 12-25 Mbps. It will also extend Optik TV to more North Shore homes this year. By this year-end, Telus will expand the reach of its Optik TV service to reach 1.3 million British Columbia households.

Movicel deploys commercial LTE 1.8 GHz network in Angola

African operator Movicel has launched of commercial 1.8GHz FDD LTE network in the Cabinda province of Angola. Earlier during MWC 2012 in Barcelona, Movicel announced it would deploy the first commercial LTE network in Angola by the end of May 2012; however operator has rolled out network 45 days ahead of the original plan. Movicel plans to provide mobile broadband technologies and services across the entire country within three years. In 2012, Movicel will expand LTE coverage to major cities, where economic development urges more information infrastructure.

LTE coverage growing rapidly according to survey

According to a survey by Bitkom, a technology trade association, Germany boasts more than 3,000 LTE base stations covering approximately 13 million households and serving around 150,000 subscribers. Three 800MHz licensees: Vodafone Germany, Telekom Deutschland (TD) and Telefonica Germany (O2) launched LTE commercially in rural areas of the country that were previously unserved by broadband of any kind, as per the regulator’s requirements, and the trio are now turning their attentions to the deployment of LTE in urban areas: some 300 cities are expected to be covered by LTE by the end of 2012. Bitkom also noted that 3G coverage in Germany now reaches 85% of the population.

EMT outlines recent LTE network coverage expansion

Estonia’s largest mobile network operator Eesti Mobiiltelefon has announced that it has enhanced the coverage of its Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, having inaugurated a number of new base stations in the capital Tallinn. New areas where it is now able to offer its services include: Kaberlas, Assakul, Kehras, Kuldalas, Sakus and Todval ja Uksnurmes (Harju County); Annas (Jarva County); Antslas (Voru County); Rapinas (Polva County); and Alatskivis, Ulenurmel and Reolas ja Torvandis (Tartu County). In making the announcement, EMT also noted that its 4G services were now available to around 35% of the country’s population, adding that it expects to achieve nationwide coverage by 2014.

TIM stages LTE demonstration in Milan

Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) is currently in the midst of staging a week-long trial of its in-deployment Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in Milan. Milanese citizens can sample transmission speeds of up to 100Mbps (downstream) and 50Mbps (upstream) at selected TIM retail stores. The promotion follows similar events in Turin and Rome, and the telco has indicated that further demonstrations are planned for other major Italian cities over the coming months. TIM secured three blocks of spectrum in the 2.6GHz band and two blocks of 800MHz spectrum, as well as frequencies in the 1800MHz band, in Italy’s mobile spectrum auction which concluded last autumn.

NBTC to set maximum 3G tariffs

The Thai telecommunications regulator will set maximum tariffs for 3G voice calls and data services that will apply to future 2.1 GHz licence holders. However, these rates will not be imposed until after operators complete their initial network investments, The rates will only apply to 3G operators with significant market power. The NBTC plans to auction off 2.1 GHz licences in the third quarter of this year.

China Mobile’s 3G Subscriber Base Nears 60 Million

China Mobile has reported a 3.5% rise in its first-quarter profits of RMB 27.8 billion. Revenues also rose, by 7.8% to RMB 127.5 billion, while EBITDA was up by 4.5% to RMB 60.7 billion. The company added 17.63 million net new customers, taking its total base to 667.2 million. Of the total, 59.56 million are using the company’s TD-SCDMA based 3G network. In the first quarter of 2012, the steady and relatively rapid macro economic growth promoted the steady development of the Company’s business. However, the Company experienced challenges arising from the continued increase in mobile penetration rate, increasingly intensified competition in the telecommunications market and the structural change of the industry value chain.

Macedonia’s VIP Mobile completes successful 3G tests

Macedonian wireless operator Mobilkom Macedonia (VIP Mobile), a unit of Telekom Austria controlled Mobilkom Austria, has released a press release confirming the successful completion of technical trials of its 3G mobile network and services. The cellco went on to say that in the wake of the trials, it has launched legal proceedings to secure formal regulatory approval for the commercial use of its 3G network. VIP Mobile turned in positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of EUR6.3 million (USD8.3 million) in FY2011, from negative EBITDA of EUR5.2 million a year earlier.

MTS Ukraine cuts price for WMR 100 3G modem

Mobile operator MTS Ukraine has reduced the price of its Wi-Fi supporting WMR-100 3G modem. The modem now costs UAH 399 when taken with a subscription, compared to its previous price of UAH 888. The device enables access to the operator’s MTS Connect 3G wireless services.

Hutch Lanka launched 3G

Hutchison Telecommunications Lanka (Hutch) has launched commercial 3G services based on a HSDPA/HSUPA network covering Sri Lanka’s Western province including capital Colombo. Hutch offered exclusively pre-paid services until a recent post-paid contract launch, won its 3G licence in August 2006 for around USD5 million, and revealed plans to launch commercial W-CDMA-based services in 2008, but the target date came and went as it struggled against tough competition, making it the last of the island’s five cellcos to deploy a 3G network. Hutch, which is backed by Hutchison Whampoa of Hong Kong, declared that its 3.5G network will reach island-wide coverage with a total of 1,000 base stations by July 2012.

Qualcomm will add support for Clearwire’s upcoming LTE TDD network to its line of multi-mode LTE chipsets with the inclusion of support for 3GPP’s Band 41 (B41) radio frequency. “The growth of LTE networks and services is closely tied to device manufacturers’ ability to develop and commercialize cost-efficient LTE devices,” said Steve Mollenkopf, president and chief operating officer, Qualcomm. “By adding support for the B41 band to our LTE chipsets, in combination with providing support for other LTE bands, Qualcomm is enabling OEMs to design cost-competitive devices and offer them in multiple geographies.”Qualcomm LTE chipsets supporting the B41 band in combination with other LTE FDD/TDD bands are scheduled for commercial availability later this year.

Umniah on track for 3G launch

Bahrain backed telco Umniah is close to completing the construction of its 3G network in Jodan. Umniah has signed up Chinese vendors ZTE and Huawei for the rollout, and is on track for its scheduled H1 2012 commercial launch. Umniah will be the last of the kingdom’s three cellcos to launch 3G services, behind Zain and Jordan Telecom Group (Orange Jordan). Umniah had delayed the deployment of its own 3G infrastructure, waiting for certain conditions in the market to improve, such as handset cost and availability of local content. In December last year, the cellco revealed that it believed the time was right to enter the 3G market, and paid the JOD50 million (USD70.343 million) fee for its concession, and set aside a further JOD50 for the network infrastructure.

Russia Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has test launched 4G services in Moscow. The company has reportedly spent USD100 million on the deployment of LTE infrastructure so far. Open Mobile’s LTE services go live with Novatel’s modem and MiFi device

Puerto Rican cellular operator Open Mobile has introduced commercial LTE mobile broadband services by offering 4G internet access via LTE-enabled USB modem and mobile hotspot devices supplied by Novatel Wireless. Cellco introduced Puerto Ricans to the Ovation MC 551 modem and the Novatel Wireless MiFi 4510 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot, offering them the convenience of portable Wi-Fi access at lightening fast speeds. The Ovation LTE modem supports peak download speeds of up to 100Mbps and peak upload speeds of up to 50Mbps, while the MiFi device supports connectivity with up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices simultaneously.

Telstra to expand LTE services in Newcastle

Australian Telco Telstra is set to expand LTE roll out in Newcastle which will see 4G mobile coverage extending into a number of new suburbs. The upcoming expansion would bring 4G coverage to suburbs such as Broadmeadow, Callaghan, Georgetown, Jesmond, Kotara East, Lambton, Mayfield, Mayfield West, Waratah and Waratah West. 4G coverage expansion is scheduled to commence shortly and when completed later this year would more than double the 4G coverage available in the Newcastle area. Telstra has confirmed that it had reached a milestone in its national LTE roll out with 4G coverage now available in more than 100 regional and metropolitan centres Australia wide including the nation’s eight capital city CBDs.

AMC expands 3G population coverage to 95 percent

Albanian operator AMC’s 3G network has achieved a coverage of 95 percent of the country’s population at the conclusion of the first quarter. Since the beginning of January, when the company officially launched its high-speed data transmission services under the HSPA+ standard (Evolved High-Speed Packet Access), it provided 3G coverage in all main cities and districts’ centres throughout the country. The company aims to expand 3G coverage to 99 percent of the population in a few more months. AMC says it provides the highest speed of 3G internet services and very convenient tariffs for its customers.

3G subs approach 13 million

The number of third-generation 3G subscribers in Vietnam has reached approximately 12.8 million. According to the ministry, mobile network operators Viettel, Vinaphone, MobiFone, Hanoi Telecom (Vietnamobile) and EVN Telecom have between them deployed around 33,700 3G base transceiver stations (BTS) across the country. Vinaphone was the first to launch W-CDMA services, in October 2009, followed by MobiFone two months later, Viettel in March 2010 and state-owned EVN Telecom (now part of Viettel) the following June. The latest cellco to launch 3G services is Vietnamobile, which introduced commercial services in December 2011. All five operators were awarded their 3G licences by the MIC in April 2009.

ZTE Wins Swedish 3G Network Expansion Contract

ZTE has signed a network expansion agreement with Hi3G Sweden worth US$74 million. According to the agreement, ZTE will deploy several thousand 3G/LTE base stations, as well as auxiliary microwave and data transmission equipment over the next three years. The deployment of ZTE equipment in Sweden shows that we have achieved a world leading position in terms of telecoms technology, product solutions and services. Nokia Siemens has won a LTE rollout contract from Singapore’s StarHub, which will be refarming its 1800MHz GSM band to carry LTE services. The first phase of StarHub’s LTE network is expected to go live by the end of 2012, covering key business areas. As part of the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will also modernize StarHub’s GSM network. Nokia Siemens Networks will provide StarHub its Single RAN platform which will enable StarHub to run GSM and LTE concurrently on the 1800 MHz band. The company will also provide its Evolved Packet Core platform including Flexi NS (Network Server) and Flexi NG (Network Gateway).

ZTE’s Quarterly Profits Rise by 24 Percent & 3G Handsets revenue up by 27.33%

ZTE has reported operating revenue of US$2.96 billion in Q1 2012, an increase of 29.46% over the same period last year. Net profit was US$22.99 million, an increase of 23.85% over the same period last year. ZTE’s revenue generated by carrier networks rose by 13.65% compared to the same period the previous year, a reflection of an increase in revenue generated from sales of optical and data communications products. Terminal product revenues were up 27.33% compared to the same period last year, driven primarily by sales of 3G handsets.

Nokia Siemens Networks has announced that Croatia’s Hrvatski Telekom has launched LTE services in the cities of Zagreb, Rijeka, Osijek and Split.
