Ericsson claims delivery of world’s first 5G New Radio kit

The race to 5G is hitting up with the launch by Swedish networking giant Ericsson of what it claims is the first hardware to enable 5G New Radio (NR) networks. NR refers to the new air interface that will come with 5G, although 5G will also apparently encompass an evolution of LTE – very long term evolution if you like. The new air interface will be characterized by the use of massive MIMO and multi-user MIMO alongside beam forming, which uses multiple focused radio beams rather than the scattergun broadcast model currently used by transmitters.

Google’s modular smartphone, Project Ara, is officially dead

Over the past few years, Google has been working on a modular smartphone concept that would allow users to swap certain components and customize the device. Potential add-ons ran the gamut from improved cameras to larger batteries. Initially, Google implied that core blocks like the CPU, display, and sensors might be swappable. But the company changed the design spec earlier this year to a much more limited platform in which the CPU, GPU, sensors, battery, and display were all locked down — leaving little reason to buy an Ara at all. Google seems to have read the writing on the wall and killed the project altogether.

Samsung attempts to snatch victory from jaws of melting Note7 defeat

You’ve got to give Samsung top marks for sheer gall. Less than a month after the Note7 debacle the company is claiming a win from the fact that most people accepted a replacement device. In other words Samsung is attempting to steer the story from a catastrophic component failure to a statement of customer devotion and loyalty. Apparently 90% Galaxy Note7 users have accepted a replacement one with a less volatile battery. On the flip side, Samsung has lost 10% of its Note7 customer base, which amounts to hundreds of thousands of punters.

Ericsson bets on the multiplay experience

The somewhat unglamorously named Ericsson Expert Analytics Release 16.1 is the latest iteration of its CEM (customer experience management) platform, featuring all the customary buzzwords and clichés including leading, award-winning, end-to-end, holistic and even the promise of a 360-degree view. So far so standard, but the difference this time is a focus on managing the customer experience across the whole multiplay spectrum – i.e. mobile, fixed, broadband, TV and content.
