Alfa Telecom, which offers mobile services under the Megacom brand, has acquired 75% of the shares in dormant cellco Kyrgyz Mobile Company for KGS210 million (USD3.6 million). Whereas Mobile operator Tele2 Kazakhstan has introduced free incoming calls for subscribers accessing roaming services in Georgia.

The UK subsidiary of chipset manufacturer Qualcomm has announced a plan to sell its wireless spectrum in the ‘L-Band’ 1452MHz-1492MHz range, following the recent European Commission (EC) approval of usage of the band for supplemental downlink applications.

MTS Ukraine extends free 3G testing at Kharkiv Metro

Mobile operator MTS Ukraine has extended free testing of its 3G services in the Kharkiv Metro. The test operation will last until the end of June, having started on 10 April there. The highest internet traffic demand has been registered at the University metro station. The 3G network of the operator is the first underground 3G network in the country.

Millicom buys 85% stake in Zantel with plans to deploy 4G

Millicom has agreed to buy an 85 percent stake in Tanzanian operator Zanzibar Telecom (Zantel) from the Etisalat Group. Under the terms of the agreement, Millicom will pay a total cash consideration of USD 1 dollar and assume total debt obligations of USD 74 million. In addition, Zantel will have up to USD 32 million in net current liabilities at closing.

Ooredoo LTE-A network now live in Kuwait

Ooredoo Kuwait has upgraded its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to the LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) standard. The ‘4G+ SPEED’ branded network aggregates frequencies in the 800MHz and 1800MHz bands, and is capable of delivering download speeds of up to 150Mbps. The cellco has stated that there will be no extra charge for customers to use the new network.

Saudi Arabia’s Capital Market Authority (CMA) suspends Mobily Shares

Saudi Arabia’s Capital Market Authority (CMA) suspended trading of its shares on the country’s stock exchange yesterday. The CMA has been conducting an investigation into the company’s financials and it will not resume trading until the operator “discloses the financial impact on its financial statements, in light of observations that have been submitted to the company”.

Meditel launches free LTE services in Casablanca

MTN South Africa adds 100 MB, 10 minute Rush Hour bundles

MTN South Africa has expanded its Rush Hour bundle range with the introduction of 100 MB data and ZAR 2 voice bundles, MyBroadband reported. Megacom acquires 75% stake in Kyrgyz Mobile Company

Alfa Telecom, which offers mobile services under the Megacom brand, has acquired 75% of the shares in dormant cellco Kyrgyz Mobile Company for KGS210 million (USD3.6 million), according to local news site Evening Bishkek. The stake was auctioned on 5 June, with bids starting at KGS160 million. The remaining 25% stake is set to stay under government control.

China Unicom loses 1.9 mln mobile customers in May

China Mobile topped 816.3 million mobile telephony subscribers in May, up from 815.9 million at the end of April. During May, China Mobile saw only 373,000 net customer additions, compared to 578,000 in April, 4.6 million in March, and 2.2 million in February this year.

Docomo to provide free Wi-Fi service on Mount Fuji

Tele2 Russia launches 3G in Vladimir, Ryazan

Mobile operator Tele2 Russia has launched its 3G network in the Ryazan and Vladimir regions. The 3G network covers the cities of Ryazan and Vladimir and their surroundings, as well as the towns of Murom, Kovrov, Gus-Khrustaliy, Sudogda, Sobinka, Lakinsk, Raduzhny, Kameshkov, Rybny and Zakharov.
