Dear Readers,
It has been a monumental month for Pakistan ICT sector. In a closely contested election, Pakistan has won seat as member of the Administrative Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). New draft Telecom Policy has also been launched on MoIT website for wider stakeholders’ consultation & comments for general public. 14th ITCN Asia 2014 International Exhibition & Conference, held on 26 to 28 August 2014 at Karachi Expo Centre – Pakistan, which ended up as a grand success. The Event was attended by 35 foreign delegates from more than 15 countries including UK, USA, UAE, China, Germany, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan etc. and more than 65,000 visitors. Mobilink 3G customers have reached 1 million mark rendering it as the fasted growing 3G service in Pakistan and has also won the Ethical Corporation Award 2014 in the category of “Most Effective International Community Investment” for its m-Literacy Program.

Dmitry Nagorniy has been appointed as a director-general of Universal Mobile Systems. Russian citizen Dmitry Nagorniy, prioir to appointment, worked as head of MTS in Altay district and left the position in August 2014. The never ending demand for mobile data and ubiquitous connectivity in today’s wireless world is driving service providers towards network improvements for spectral efficiencies as well as significant investments in new technology resources to densify their networks. Nearly 12 billion internet connected devices will be in use worldwide by the end of 2014, according to the latest research from Strategy Analytics. Fewer cords, smaller antennas and quicker video transmission. This may be the result of a new type of microwave circuit that was designed at Chalmers University of Technology. The research team behind the circuits currently holds an attention grabbing record. SingTel Mobile and equipment vendors Ericsson and Qualcomm have reportedly achieved peak download speeds of 260Mbps during a live demonstration of frequency division duplexing (FDD)/time division duplexing (TDD) carrier aggregation (CA) technology. The test used Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 processor and Ericsson Long Term Evolution (LTE) software designed to support the company’s RBS6000 family of base transceiver stations (BTS) for macro and small-cell networks.

Pakistan Wins Hotly Contested Elections for the ITU Premier Global Telecom Policy Body at Plenipotentiary Conference in Busan, Republic Of Korea

In a closely contested election, Pakistan has won seat as member of the Administrative Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The elections were held during the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, currently in progress at Busan, Republic of Korea. Pakistan got 101 votes, out of a total of 168 votes to complete the victory. The election victory has secured position for Pakistan in the administrative, management and policy making body of the telecommunication agency. The International community has shown it confidence in The Government of Pakistan’s policies being per sued since last 15 months and voted Pakistan to be a part of global policy making body.

4.5 Million Kyrgyz SIMs Remain Unregistered

Since the introduction of compulsory SIM registration in Kyrgyzstan in March 2014 – requiring mobile users to enter personal ID when activating a new SIM card – the number of registered SIMs had risen to nearly 2.5 million by 1 October 2014. Mobile operator CDMA Uzbekistan, working under the Perfectum Mobile brand, has introduced a promotion for subscribers in regions across the country. Armenian mobile operator Armentel, working under the Beeline Armenia brand, has introduced a new ‘spare SIM’ service for subscribers. The service provides an empty reserved SIM that can be bought at operator branded shops. The reserved SIM can be activated if the main SIM is damaged or lost. Tele2 Kazakhstan Offers New Super+ Tariff

Mobile operator Tele2 Kazakhstan has introduced its new Super+ tariff to subscribers across the country. Pakistani mobile telephony operator Ufone has launches a 1GB internet package for prepay users. Ufone prepay customers can subscribe to the package by dialing a short number. The service is available for PKR 200. Customers will also have free access to Whatsapp and Facebook. Armenian Mobile Subscriber Base Hits 3.35mln in Q2

Armenia’s mobile subscriber base reached 3.35 million at the end of the second quarter. The figure grew by 29,870 connections from the previous quarter. The mobile market recorded a penetration rate of 120 percent. The subscriber base of VivaCell rose by 19,350 to 2.122 million. It lifted by 19,570 to 718,980 for Armentel and fell by 9,060 to 508,010 for Orange Armenia.

Nextel de Mexico has announced that it has switched on its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey. Max Launches LTE in Varna

Bulgarian mobile operator Max (previously Max Telecom) has switched on its Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in Varna, the country’s third largest city and a major seaside resort. SingTel, Ericsson and Qualcomm Deliver 260Mbps Download Speeds in FDD/TDD Carrier Aggregation Tests

SingTel Mobile and equipment vendors Ericsson and Qualcomm have reportedly achieved peak download speeds of 260Mbps during a live demonstration of frequency division duplexing (FDD)/time division duplexing (TDD) carrier aggregation (CA) technology. The test used Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 processor and Ericsson Long Term Evolution (LTE) software designed to support the company’s RBS6000 family of base transceiver stations (BTS) for macro and small-cell networks.

ZTE supports CSL’s full VoLTE launch

Chinese technology heavyweight ZTE has highlighted in a press release that it supported the recent full-blown commercial launch of voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) services by Hong Kong cellco CSL (part of the PCCW-HKTgroup), which has enabled all CSL users to access VoLTE voice and video calling services with any compatible device.

LTE Accounts For 30% of Huawei Colombia’s Revs In 2013

4G technology accounted for nearly 30 percent of Huawei’s overall business in Colombia in 2013, announced by Huawei Colombia solutions and marketing VP Ivan Herrera. The executive said that Huawei generated revenues of USD 480 million last year. According to Herrera, Huawei has a market share of nearly 70 percent in the local 4G LTE infrastructure business. The Chinese firm has deployed LTE infrastructure for five operators in Colombia, he added.

Ericsson Eyeing Afghan Contract

Swedish vendor Ericsson is in the process of negotiating a management contract with a second telco in Afghanistan, Gulf News cites Ericsson’s regional chief Tarek Saadi as saying. The official did not name the operator involved but ruled out Etisalat, leaving Afghan Telecom (Aftel), Roshan and Afghan Wireless Communications Company (AWCC) as the potential partner, Ericsson having signed a managed services deal with MTN Afghanistan back in 2012. Despite the progress of the talks, Saadi noted that an official announcement was unlikely to be made until H1 2015.
