Ms. Anusha Rahman, Minister of State for IT & Telecom chaired a meeting regarding establishment of Telecentres in rural areas of Pakistan. It was decided in the meeting to introduce e-health, e-learning, e-commerce and e-agriculture services in tele-centres established to facilitate people of far flung areas. Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has started to confirm blocking of unverified SIMs by inspecting the Home Location Registers (HLRs) of the Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs). Zong has signed a MoU with Nokia Care according to which both SIMs of Zong will be available at all 18 Nokia Care centers across Pakistan while Nokia phones will be made available for purchase across all Zong Customer Service Centers (CSC) in Pakistan. Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has announced consolidated revenues of PKR. 100.5 billion for nine months period.

VivaCell has invested AMD 31 million in the launch of an educational micro-electronics laboratory at the European Regional Educational Academy. Afghan Post will conduct a six-month pilot of Roshan’s M-Paisa mobile banking service in nineteen post offices throughout Kabul. VivaCell-MTS has installed another 4 new base stations, with the installation of these new base stations 3G-based higher quality voice and internet services became available to the population of the villages. LG has started sales of the G Pro Lite Dual smartphone in Kazakhstan.

UZTE to Expand Smartphones Assortment

An Uzbek-Chinese joint venture, Pengzhong Xingsheng, which launched production of three models of smartphones under UZTE brand, is planning to expand assortment of its products. The company is sure that new smartphones will be popular among consumers thanks to high quality and affordable prices despite UZTE brand is relatively new.

PTA Carries Out Inspection of Telcos to Confirm Blocking of Un-Verified SIMs

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has started to confirm blocking of unverified SIMs by inspecting the Home Location Registers (HLRs) of the Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs). PTA team headed by Director General (Enforcement) visited CMOs’ offices to confirm the blocking of SIMs that could not be re-verified beyond September 2013. During the visit, progress made by CMOs on identifying and blocking “not re-verified” SIMs was checked by PTA. CMOs assured PTA to continue their efforts against identity theft wherein SIMs were activated without the knowledge of CNIC holders.

Vivacell Invests AMD 31 Mln in Micro-Electronics Laboratory

VivaCell has invested AMD 31 million in the launch of an educational micro-electronics laboratory at the European Regional Educational Academy. The lab was opened under cooperation with the company Synopsys Armenia. VivaCell signed an agreement on the joint programme with the company in 2011. The operator has invested around AMD 74 million under the programme in three years, opening three IT training labs.

Afghan Post to Pilot Roshan M-Paisa Mobile Banking Service

Afghan Post will conduct a six-month pilot of Roshan’s M-Paisa mobile banking service in nineteen post offices throughout Kabul. The post offices will become authorized M-Paisa agents, expanding the network of agents to nearly 1,000 registered agents throughout Afghanistan. Roshan has pledged to fund improvements to the post offices involved in the pilot. These improvements include the installation of Public Call Office handsets in each branch, which will allow Afghans access to public telephone services. This will add to the more than 11,000 Public Call Offices Roshan currently operates throughout Afghanistan.

Mobicom Investigated For Excessive Postpaid Charges

Mobicom has been found to charge excessive prices for postpaid services. Following complaints, the Authority for Fair Competition and Consumer Protection investigated the issue. After finding evidence of excessive charges, the authority put the company on notice. Mobicom responded with a statement saying it had charged excessively due to a postpaid service contractor’s payment imbalance on 26 October. The Authority is now investigating further to see if 26 October was the first infraction or part of a pattern. Mobicom could be facing a MNT 10 million fine if found to have charged excessively intentionally.

Nokia Pakistan and Zong Join Hands for Enhanced Customer Facilitation

Zong has signed a MoU with Nokia Care according to which both SIMs of Zong will be available at all 18 Nokia Care centres across Pakistan while Nokia phones will be made available for purchase across all Zong Customer Service Centres (CSC) in Pakistan. The MoU was signed at Zong’s headquarters in Islamabad. This collaboration is a first of its kind in the robustly developing telecom market in the country. According to the partnership, both the companies will be able to increase their outreach to customers and facilitate them in a better way by offering bundled solutions.

Vivacell-MTS Installs New Base Stations in All the Regions of Armenia

VivaCell-MTS has installed another 4 new base stations in Vayotys Dzor and Ararat regions – Gnishik and Mozrov (Gnishik community of Vayots Dzor), Shaghap and Lusashogh (Ararat). VivaCell-MTS previously had mobile coverage in the villages of Mozrov, Shaghap and Lusashogh provided through base stations installed in the neighboring locations, and with the installation of these new base stations next to these villages, 3G-based higher quality voice and internet services became available to the population of the villages. In the fourth village – Gnishik, VivaCell-MTS is now the sole mobile operator providing the population with high-quality 3G mobile network, including high-speed internet.

Uzbekistan Creates Republican Council on Radio Frequencies

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a resolution “On improving organizational management and use of radio frequency spectrum”. The resolution abolished the State Commission on radio frequencies of Uzbekistan and created Republic Council on radio frequencies. The main tasks of the Council are to implement state policy in effective use of radio frequencies in Uzbekistan, develop and implement concept on distribution and use of radio frequencies, conduct international cooperation in use of radio frequencies, protect national interests of Uzbekistan at international organizations on planning, allocating and using radio frequencies. The Council will also protect interests of the users of the radio frequencies; introduce modern technologies in the sector, etc.

PTCL Delivers PKR 100 Billion Revenue

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has announced consolidated revenues of PKR. 100.5 billion for nine months period ended on September 30, 2013. The financial results for the period ended September 2013 were announced today at the Company’s Board of Directors (BoD) meeting held in Islamabad. PTCL group posted a revenue growth of 16% with Net Profit amounting to Rs.11.3 billion for the period under review, while Gross Profit stood at Rs.35.98 billion. PTCL’s revenue stood at Rs.60.7 billion and showed a significant increase of 31%, with Net Profit standing at Rs.9.3 billion, while Gross Profit was recorded at Rs.20.8 billion.

LG to Start G Pro Lite Dual Sales in Kazakhstan

LG has started sales of the G Pro Lite Dual smartphone in Kazakhstan. Sales of the dual-SIM device, featuring a 5.5-inch IPS-screen, started at the end of October. The recommended price of the smartphone is KZT 59,990.

USF Tele Centres to House Biometric Verification of SIM Cards

Ms. Anusha Rahman, Minister of State for IT & Telecom chaired a meeting regarding establishment of Telecentres in rural areas of Pakistan. It was decided in the meeting to introduce e-health, e-learning, e-commerce and e-agriculture services in tele-centres established to facilitate people of far flung areas.
The tele-centres in addition will house biometric verification of SIM cards, Computerized National Identity Cards (CNIC), birth/death registration and computer training for the youth of the nation.
The meeting observed that tele-centres would create employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.

Kcell’s Q3 Profit Falls 4%, Revenues Grow 3%

Kcell saw its third quarter profit fall 4.4 percent to KZT 15.92 billion from KZT 16.67 billion in Q3 2012. Revenues went up 3 percent to KZT 48.75 billion from KZT 47.32 billion as voice revenues fell 3.1 percent to KZT 37.47 billion and data revenues grew by 43.3 percent to KZT 6.80 billion. VAS revenues were KZT 4.48 billion, up 22.7 percent, and other revenues fell 98.6 percent to KZT 3 million. EBITDA, excluding non-recurring items, rose just under 1 percent to KZT 26.89 billion but EBITDA margin slipped 55.2 percent from 56.3 percent a year earlier. During the third quarter, Kcell added 174,710 subscribers to bring its total to 14.25 million.

Beeline Opens New Sales and Service Office In Gijduvan

Beeline (Unitel LLC and Buzton JV) opened new office of sales and service in Gijduvan city of Bukhara region. The operator said that the opening ceremony of new office has been held in Bukhara region on 31 October 2013. Director of Southern-Western regional branch of Unitel Gulyam Artikov said that Beeline leads in Bukhara region and the company regularly monitors of quality of services and opening of new office in Gijduvan is evidence for it.

Beeline Expands Roaming Service to Lithuania

Beeline (Unitel LLC and Buzton JV) expanded geography of international roaming. The agreement on rendering voice roaming services was signed with Omnitel of Lithuania. Beeline subscribers can use CAMEL roaming. The service allows to use Beeline communication services at any positive balance, in other words without guarantee fee of US$50 and till the balance of subscriber reaches US$0. At the same time, the funds will be written off in real time regime.

Ucell Brings In Activation Fee, Offers New Packages

Ucell announced that it has modified its services conditions for new subscribers and has brought in a UZS 2,000 activation charge when subscribing to any tariff. Three new packages will be offered for sale in its dealers’ shops. The prices of the packages will be UZS 5,000, UZS 3,500 and UZS 2,000. It will transfer UZS 3,000 and UZS 1,500 respectively to the balances with purchases of the first two packages.

Minno to Start Tablet Production in Armenia

Minno plans to start assembling tablets in Armenia in January 2014, as per Vaan Shakaryan, the vice-president of the corporation. The company will be the first launching tablets in Armenia and targets 30,000-50,000 units produced monthly. The tablet will feature a 9.7-inch screen and a tetra-core Cortex processor, priced at AMD 100,000.

Beeline (Unitel LLC and Buzton JV) has provided opportunity to Beeline Club bonus programme members to exchange points to smartphones, WiFi-routers and 3G-modems. Dmitry Grigoryev, commercial director of Unitel said that millions of people are members of the programme, which offers free minutes, SMS and Internet, as well as devices. The operator said that Beeline Club members can exchange their bonus points to devices. Zong Pulls Out Of Warid Bidding

Zong has decided to withdraw from bidding for Warid Telecom. The company dropped out of the bidding process for a 100 percent stake in Warid on the last day. Zong didn’t clarify the reasons of changing its strategy but said that company is now looking forward to investing in its technology transformation. There were clear speculations that Zong had saved the money for investment in upgrading infrastructure for 3G operations, while some experts say that Warid’s high-asking prices was the bone of contention.

Beeline Raises Daily Subscription Fee To US$0.04

Beeline (Unitel LLC and Buzton JV LLC) is increasing daily subscription fee for pre-paid tariff plans from 5 November 2013; the daily subscription fee will be increased by US$0.01. The change will affect pre-paid tariff plans, excluding tariffs of Status series, the operator said. Currently, the daily subscription fee is US$0.03, and it was set in the beginning of 2013. The operator said that it includes service “Prosotoy nomer” (Ordinary Number) to starting package of new subscribers. The cost of the service at US$1.5 will be withdrawn once SIM-card is activated.

Bakcell, Huawei Complete Core Network Unification

Bakcell has announced the completion of its core network unification project in cooperation with China’s Huawei Technologies. Work on the project started towards the end of 2012, and as of August 2013 all voice traffic is served by brand new, high capacity and fully redundant switching equipment. Bakcell’s new unified core network is fully compatible with 4G LTE technologies and is ready for the future evolution towards Voice-over-LTE.

PTA Advertises a Request for Proposal for Consultants for Spectrum Auction

Soon after getting the policy directives from the Ministry of Information and Technology regarding Spectrum Auction for Third Generation Mobile Services in Pakistan, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has taken its first step forward and has requested for proposals (RFP) for consultants of international repute to facilitate the auction process. Complete Financial and Technical Proposals are to be submitted by the interested parties according to the parameters defined in the RFP before 12th November, 2013.

Kar-Tel Launches New Mobile Internet Service

Kar-Tel, which works under the Beeline Kazakhstan brand, has launched a new unlimited mobile internet service. It is offer for customers using USB modems 10 GB of monthly traffic when they sign an annual subscription contract. The internet speed drops to 64 kbps until the end of the month after exceeding the usage ceiling. The activation rate for the service is KZT 9,000. For smartphone owners, the activation fee is KZT 6,000 and the monthly traffic ceiling totals 1 GB.

Taiwanese 4G auction winners revealed

Chunghwa Telecom said to have acquired the largest batch of frequencies. The operator is understood to have agreed to pay TWD39.08 billion (USD1.33 billion) for three frequency blocks totaling 35MHz of bandwidth. For its part, Far EasTone bagged 30MHz of bandwidth, while Taiwan Mobile Company also acquired a total of 30MHz of new spectrum. Ambit Microsystems Corp claimed a total of 20MHz meanwhile, with Asia Pacific Telecom paying TWD6.415 billion for a 10MHz block in the 700MHz band. Star of Taiwan, a subsidiary backed by Ting Hsin International Group, secured the 10MHz ‘B1’ block in the 900MHz band.The total value of the combined bids for the spectrum offered by the National Communications Commission (NCC) was TWD118.65 billion (USD4.03 billion), well above the floor price of approximately TWD35.9 billion.

SK Telecom Enhances LTE Network with Rollout of Services Using 1800 MHz Band

SK Telecom has announced that it is now offering 4G LTE services using the spectrum in the 1800MHz band which it won in the government’s recent frequency auction. It has launched its ‘newly enhanced’ LTE services in the Mapo district of Seoul, and plans to expand coverage to ‘main areas’ of eleven major districts of the capital by early next month. SKT aims to extend 1800MHz LTE services to the Seoul metropolitan area by November 2013, and with a further six metropolitan cities expected to gain access to upgraded offering by March 2014, nationwide coverage is forecast to be achieved by July 2014.

Dr. Ismail Shah Appointed as Chairman PTA

Dr. Ismail Shah was appointed as the Chairman of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, a decision which was made possible after the Supreme Court’s intervention. Dr. Syed Ismail Shah, former member Telecom at the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication brings with him rich experience of both private and government sector. He has a vast experience in the ICT industry and a lifetime member of Pakistan Engineering Council, Senior Member IEEE USA and Member of the Institute of Electronics Information and Communication Engineers in Japan. He is also the Extinctive Director of Central Asian Cellular Forum. He also provides consultancy services to several companies working providing services based on CDMA. His current research interests are in the area of Multiple user detection in CDMA, MC-CDMA, OFDM, Jammer incision using time-frequency analysis and MIMO-OFDM based systems.

MTS and Megafon Extend 4G Footprints

Two Russian cellular operators have announced extensions to their 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks. MTS has revealed that it has completed the first phase of its LTE rollout in Primorye, Khabarovsk and Amur regions, following on from Friday’s announcement that it had deployed stage one of its 4G network in the Pskov region in partnership with equipment supplier Samsung. Meanwhile, rival operator MegaFon has introduced LTE-based services in Omsk in southwestern Siberia. The firm says its 4G networks are now live in all cities in Siberia with more than one million inhabitants.

Thai Minister Supports Moves for LTE Services at 1800 MHz

DTAC has moved a step closer to being allowed to launch LTE services on a block of unused 25 MHz spectrum that it controls. The Thai network has 50 MHz of 1800 MHz spectrum under a concession from the state-owned CAT Telecom, but only uses half of it. CAT Telecom wants the unused spectrum handed back so it can launch its own 4G service, but DTAC argues that it should use for LTE services, or returned to the regulator and then auctioned off. The mobile network would then aim to buy the spectrum and launch LTE services. The ICT Minister, Gp Capt Anudith Nakornthap has now come out in favor of the DTAC proposal, having previously supported the state network’s plan.

Bulgarian Operator Carries Out First LTE Tests

Max Telecom has carried out the first mobile data transfers over its LTE network ahead of a commercial launch. Max Telecom is working with Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) to deploy its network. In the very beginning its 4G LTE network will cover 6 key cities in Bulgaria – Sofia, Ruse, Pleven, Sliven, Stara Zagora, and Bansko. Max Telecom has recently changed ownership and under the leadership of CEO Peter Covell, the company is executing a new strategy – to roll out Bulgaria’s first nationwide 4G LTE network in the 1800MHz bands.

Rogers offers LTE roaming on AT&T’s US network

Rogers Communications has launched 4G LTE mobile roaming in the US on AT&T’s network. Rogers says the agreement makes it the first Canadian cellco to offer LTE roaming for its customers travelling south of the border. Rogers’ 4G roaming offer allows 50MB of data for CAD7.99 (USD7.75) per day, ranging up to CAD300 for 1GB with a month’s validity. The 50MB basic daily rate is nearly twice the data volume used by a typical Rogers’ smartphone user per day in Canada.

MegaFon Completes $1.2 Billion Purchase of LTE Network

MegaFon has completed the previously announced deal to buy the LTE network operator, Scartel/Yota. MegaFon is currently deploying its own LTE network, but also has a reseller agreement with Scartel. A full merger of the two networks should reduce costs from a lack of overlapping coverage. In the end the company paid US$1.18 billion for the LTE network, plus its debt. However, the payment is being spread over two years, with half the money paid in a year’s time, and the rest a year later.

BASE Inaugurates LTE Network in 15 Cities

BASE Company has announced the launch of commercial 4G services in 15 of the country’s large- and medium-sized cities, with those being: Aalst, Antwerp, Beveren, Bruges, Charleroi, Genk, Ghent, Hasselt, Kortrijk, Leuven, Liege, Mechelen, Namur, Ostend and Sint-Truiden. Looking ahead the cellco said it expects to expand the coverage area quickly. In terms of access for its existing customers, BASE noted that any customer with a 4G-compatible smartphone who was located in one of the launch cities and who had a bundle that included 4G could take advantage of the increased downlink speeds immediately.

Conatel Awards 4G LTE Licenses to Claro, Tigo

The Honduran telecoms regulator Comision Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (Conatel) has awarded Long Term Evolution (LTE)-suitable spectrum in the 1700MHz and 2100MHz frequency bands to international telecoms companies America Movil and Millicom, operating in the country under the Claro and Tigo brands, respectively. Under the terms set out by the licenses, the cellcos are required to establish and operate national 2G networks in 100% of Honduran municipalities within three years from authorization; their 3G networks must reach 25% territorial coverage in the same period, while the footprint of the 4G networks should cover 15% of the territory by 2016, corresponding to the country’s major cities.

T-Mobile Puerto Rico reaches 60%LTE population coverage

T-Mobile Puerto Rico has completed a secondary stage of 4G LTE mobile network expansion, raising its LTE population coverage to 60%. The project, which took three months, encompassed additional municipalities and expansion of the existing 4G footprint and capacity in densely populated urban areas. Telecom New Zealand to Launch LTE in November

Telecom New Zealand has announced that its LTE based 4G network will launch on 12 November in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch – and will be available to both prepaid and pay-monthly customers at no additional cost on Telecom’s current plans. The 4G plans were released on the same day that Telecom introduced a new-look retail brand, featuring the Telecom ‘spark’ in a range of new colours, in addition to the traditional blue. Telecom’s Chief Operating Officer said 4G services will use LTE technology over the 1800MHz spectrum band.

STC Boosts Its Network Capacity By 30%

Saudi Telecom Company (STC) has announced that its network capacity had been expanded by 30% to accommodate the needs of more than 31 million users. STC have increased the number of working international circuits between Saudi Arabia and the rest of the world to 195,000, especially in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The network can process more than five terabytes simultaneously. Further, the company has added 296 Wi-Fi hotspots in Mina, a neighborhood of Mecca in Makkah Province, and boosted the download speeds in the area to a maximum of 42Mbps.

Indosat Launches 3G Network in 900 Mhz Spectrum

Indosat has expanded its 3G network by refarming some of its existing 900 MHz spectrum. With the launch, Indosat will become the first telecoms operator to commercially operate a UMTS 900MHz network in Indonesia, after an initial trial in West Sumatra during September 2012. Indosat’s modernization programme will initially launch in Bali, which was chosen as the first area to implement the service because of the island’s popularity as a world tourism destination.

Telstra Reaches 3.2m 4G Users Two Years after Network Launch

Telstra has revealed that more than 3.2 million 4G devices are now operating over its infrastructure. The total included more than 360,000 smartphones that had been connected since 30 June 2013. Meanwhile, with regards to its infrastructure, Telstra’s executive director for networks Mike Wright said that the cellco had switched on its 2,500th 4G base station in Young, New South Wales to mark the anniversary. Coupled with the expansion of its network footprint, Telstra has also noted its efforts in boosting speeds further. As a result of ‘expanded spectrum and network capabilities’ it has amended the typical downlink rates offered over its 4G network from between 2Mbps and 40Mbps to between 2Mbps and 50Mbps.

T-Mobile Austria Launches LTE-Compatible Smartphones

T-Mobile Austria has announced that its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, which was previously only available to customers with USB dongles, is now compatible with a range of smartphones, including the HTCOne, Sony Xperia Z and Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The network supports theoretical transmission speeds of up to 100Mbps/50Mbps (down/uplink), and customers subscribing to the ‘Smart Net’ package pay EUR9.99 (USD13.56) per month for a 6GB data allowance. BTC to Roll out LTE by Year-End

Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) plans to launch Long Term Evolution (LTE) services later this year as part of its Christmas marketing campaign. The network will be deployed by Chinese vendor Huawei and will be first available in New Providence, before being expanded throughout the rest of the country. The new platform, which will be capable of theoretical top speeds of 100Mbps, will enable BTC customers to use services such as video calling and streaming of high definition (HD) video.

Unicom to procure FD and TD-LTE infrastructure

China Unicom has opened a tender for the supply of Long Term Evolution (LTE) infrastructure in preparation for the allocation of 4G licenses later this year. Unicom is looking to procure 34,000 Frequency Division (FD)-LTE base stations, 8,000 FD-LTE small cells and 10,000 Time Division (TD)-LTE base stations. China Unicom has long advocated the use the FD standard for its 4G network, and its adoption of the home grown TD platform as an auxiliary technology is likely due to pressure or encouragement from the regulator, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

TIM extends LTE network to 84 new municipalities

Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) has announced that it has extended its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to 84 new municipalities, including Salerno, La Spezia, Asti, Marsala and Torre del Greco. The latest deployment means that the network now covers 384 towns and cities in in Italy, offering outdoor coverage to more than 41% of the population. TIM expects to cover 60% of the country with its 4G signal by the end of 2015.

Hungary’s Telenor Upgrades LTE Network to 150Mbps

Telenor Hungary has upgraded its LTE network to support a theoretical peak download speed of 150Mbps. Thanks to the availability of a 20MHz block in the 1800MHz band for the company after the spectrum contract extension, Telenor said that it can now double its 4G speed offering launched in summer 2012. The 4G network offering a download speed of up to 150 Mbps will be made available in nearly a quarter of Hungary’s territory by the end of the year with coverage provided in more than 100 settlements including Miskolc, Veszprém and Szeged.

CNT launching LTE next month

Corporacion Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CNT) will launch commercial 4G LTE mobile broadband services in late-November, its CEO announced at a media preview. Users will be able to subscribe to CNT’s 4G services from the final week of next month, enabling mobile internet access at download speeds of between 15Mbps and 20Mbps, and 6Mbps-7Mbps upload, or around ‘ten times’ faster than CNT’s current network. Regalado added that investment in the LTE project to date had reached USD36 million, while around 400 LTE base stations in major cities will be operational in the initial commercial phases.

CSL launching 300Mbps LTE-A in 1Q14

CSL will roll out LTE Advanced (LTE-A) services – doubling its current theoretical mobile peak download speeds to 300Mbps – across its network in the next three to four months. CSL’s chief technology officer Christian Daigneault said the new technology would continue to be laboratory tested over the coming months and new LTE-A compatible devices would be available to CSL subscribers next year, when the network ‘will be mature’. EE to Launch Rural 4G Home Broadband Next Month

EE is planning to launch an LTE home broadband service in rural areas next month. The service will be available in Cumbria from 11 November, with other rural areas to be covered by the network over the coming months. A pilot project of EE’s 4G home broadband service has been in place in the Northern Fells district of Cumbria since 2012, with those participating in the trial charged fromGBP15.99 (USD25.7) per month for a downstream connection of 8Mbps-12Mbps. B-Mobile Poised To Launch LTE in Thimpu

Bhutan Telecom (BT) has announced that its B-Mobile unit’s launch of 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) services in Thimpu. The network, which utilizes the 1800MHz band, offers coverage of the following locations: Norzin Lam, Chubachu, Dzong, Kawajangsa, Changangkha, the Ministers’ Enclave and Motithang High School. LTE-suitable SIM cards are priced at BTN500 (USD8.16), and include credit to the value of BTN500which will expire within seven days of activation. Unitel Claims First African 4G Video Roaming

Unitel and Belgian counterpart Proximus have performed the first African 4G LTE international roaming video call (via LTE data roaming session), supported by BICS, a global provider of wholesale carrier services. The demonstration was made in the presence of Princess Astrid of Belgium, on an official state visit by the Belgian Economic Trade Mission to Angola. The Belgian deputy prime minister Didier Reynders (in Luanda, Angola) and a BICS representative in Belgium made the video call using BICS’ LTE signalling platform.

Vimpelcom lights LTE network in Kaliningrad

Vimpelcom (Beeline) has confirmed that it has introduced 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) connectivity to the city of Kaliningrad, on the Baltic coast. The cellco will offer coverage to around 80% of the city at launch. Although the rollout is said to satisfy the coverage obligations associated with Vimpelcom’s LTE license. Vimpelcom also plans to launch LTE networks in the lucrative markets of Moscow and St Petersburg on 1 December 2013 and 1 March 2014, respectively. Further, by the end of 2014 Vimpelcom’s ZTE-built LTE networks will comprise around 12,000 base transceiver stations (BTS), and by the end of 2015 the company plans to cover approximately 55% of Russia’s population.

Vodafone Extends LTE Connectivity to Hamilton

Vodafone New Zealand has announced that it is in the process of extending its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to Hamilton, the most populous city of the Waikato Region, in the North Island. To that end, the cellco says it has activated the technology at the Waikato Stadium and Waikato Hospital. Vodafone’s LTE network currently offers coverage to more 1.26 million Kiwis across nine towns and cities, namely: Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown, Wanaka, Lake Brunner, Taupo, New Plymouth and Palmerston North.

Grameenphone Posts Rising Revenues on Increased Traffic

Grameenphone has reported a 9.4 percent increase in revenues for the third quarter of 2013 of BDT25 billion (US$317 million). The company said that the growth in revenues was attributed to increased traffic, induced by attractive recharge based campaign and cost cutting promotions. Growth in interconnection minutes, higher device sales and adjacent business also contributed significantly.During the three months to the end of September; the mobile network added 2.07 million subscriptions, taking the subscriber base to just over 46 million. Net profit also jumped, to BDT5.7 billion compared to BDT3.2 billion a year ago as the company also increased its profit margin.

Sprint Adds 45 LTE Markets

Sprint launched a major expansion of its 4G LTE coverage, the wireless carrier announced Tuesday.
Sprint rolled out it’s high-speed service in 45 new markets, bringing its total coverage to 230 markets. Sprint’s rollout included parts of Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island, which finally brings its 4G LTE coverage to all five boroughs of New York. Other areas to see LTE access turned on include Abilene, Texas, Naples, Fla., and Red Bluff, Calif.

Samsung and Huawei Outperform As Global Smartphone Shipments Reach Quarter-Billion Units

Global smartphone shipments grew 45 percent annually to reach a record 251 million units in the third quarter of 2013. Samsung captured a record 35 percent share of all smartphone volumes worldwide, while Huawei jumped into third place in the rankings. Samsung shipped over two times more smartphones than Apple during the quarter. Huawei was a star performer as global shipments grew 67 percent annually to 12.7 million units in Q3 2013. The smartphone industry’s robust growth is being driven by strong demand for LTE models in developed regions like the US and 3G devices in emerging markets such as China.

AT&T Posts Steady Improvements in Revenues and Profits

AT&T has reported its third-quarter financial results, and saw a modest rise in revenues as it added over 2 million new customers. For the quarter ended September 30, 2013, AT&T’s consolidated revenues totaled $32.2 billion, up 2.2 percent versus a year ago. Operating income was $6.2 billion versus $6.0 billion. Net profit rose to US$3.8 billion compared to $3.6 billion in the year-earlier quarter. Total wireless revenues, which include equipment sales, were up 5.1 percent year over year to $17.5 billion. Smartphones accounted for a record 89 percent of postpaid phone sales in the quarter.

Alcatel-Lucent Wins Chinese 4G Network Contract

Alcatel-Lucent has won a contract from China Mobile for its TDD based LTE network deployment. After the completion of China Mobile’s 4G trial, this additional award to Alcatel-Lucent represents 11% of the mobile network’s plan to deploy more than 207,000 TD-LTE base stations in China by the end of 2013. Financial terms were not disclosed.

NSN Confirms China Mobile LTE Contract Award

Nokia Solutions and Networks has confirmed reports from last month, that it won an 11 percent chunk of China Mobile’s TD-LTE network deployment. Under the contract, NSN will deploy key radio network elements for China Mobile’s 1.9 GHz, 2.6 GHz and 2.3 GHz frequency bands, including its Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Stations. In addition, NSN will deploy part of the network in TD-SCDMA / TD-LTE dual mode, supporting TD-SCDMA site software upgrade to the dual mode implementation. NSN is the only non-Chinese vendor to support TD-SCDMA evolution to TD-LTE. The contract also covers network implementation, planning & optimization and care services.

Ericsson Profits Jump Despite Fall in Revenues

Ericsson has reported its third quarter financial results and announced that its revenues fell by 3 percent, although net profits rose by more than a third. Sales came in at SEK53 billion (US$8.3 billion), down 3 percent on the previous year, although the company noted that if adjusted for foreign exchange losses and asset disposals, sales would have been 3 percent higher than a year ago. Reported sales decreased YoY, mainly driven by lower sales in North East Asia and India. Segments Networks and Global Services showed slightly lower reported sales YoY, while Support Solutions saw a more significant decline in volumes. CDMA sales in North America, as well as GSM sales in China, continued to decline.
Net profit came in SEK3 billion (US$470 million) — a sharp rise of 38% over the previous year.

LG Announces G Flex, 6-Inch Curved Smartphone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 800

LG G Flex curved smartphone, initially announced in Korea, is powered by 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (MSM 8974) processor, the new curved smartphone features Adreno 330, 450MHz GPU. The latest 6-inch HD smartphone has 2GB LP DDR3 RAM / 32GB eMMc memory. It comes with 13.0MP rear camera and 2.1MP front camera. LG G Flex not only employs a curvature arc that is optimized for the average face, to deliver improved voice and sound quality, but curved form also increases the sound level by 3dB compared to typical flat smartphones. LG also says the G Flex uses “self-healing” technology, a special protective film on the back cover is designed to get rid of scratches on the phone within minutes.

Alcatel-Lucent, G-Mobile to deploy small cell base stations in Mongolia

Alcatel-Lucent and G-Mobile will deploy small cell base stations to improve 3G mobile broadband coverage in densely populated areas such as shopping malls and stadiums in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. G-Mobile’s initial small cell deployment will provide better coverage and boost capacity for its wireless 3G network in densely populated locations such as malls and stadiums where quality coverage is often limited. Alcatel-Lucent will provide its light Radio small cells portfolio including the 9362 Enterprise Small Cells and 9764 Metro Cells Outdoor solutions, together with integration and technical support for high quality and rapid deployment.

Ericsson and Telstra Test LTE Video Broadcast Technologies

Telstra has completed the world’s first LTE Broadcast session on a commercial LTE network, based on equipment supplied by Ericsson. LTE Broadcast provides the ability to send the same content simultaneously to a very large number of devices in a target area. During the demonstration, the devices received different video feeds. Additionally, the devices received a large file using the single LTE Broadcast channel. Qualcomm Labs’ LTE Broadcast SDK and Middleware enabled these features on the trial devices running on Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and integrated modem platforms.

NSN Claims Larger Share of Mobile’s TD-LTE Tender

Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) claims to have been awarded the largest share of China Mobile’s Time Division Long Term Evolution (TD-LTE) tender amongst foreign vendors. NSN was directly awarded 11% of the TD-LTE rollout contracts, equivalent to other non-Chinese manufacturers. Under the contract, NSN will deploy key radio network elements including its Flexi Multiradio 10 base stations, supporting the cellco’s 1900MHz, 2100MHz and 2600MHz frequency bands. The solution will consist mainly of single-mode TD-LTE infrastructure, though some areas of the network will feature dual mode TD-SCDMA/TD-LTE.

Google and LG Show Off New Nexus 5 Smartphone

Google and LG have jointly shown off the first smartphone to ship with the KitKat variant of the Android OS — the Nexus 5 smartphone. The Nexus 5 is also the slimmest and fastest Google Nexus phone to date. The new smartphone comes with a 5-inch Full HD IPS display and will ship in either 16GB or 32GB versions. The Nexus 5 comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and supports LTE connectivity. Nexus 5 will be available on Google Play starting today in the USA, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, U.K., Australia, Korea and Japan. Offline availability in Europe, Central/South Americas, Asia, CIS and the Middle East will begin in mid-November.
