Pakistani mobile operator Mobilink has introduced the Alcatel Idol 3 ‘reversible smartphone’ on the local market. The device features dual front-facing JBL Audio speakers, 13-megapixel rear camera, Sony IMX sensor, and 5.5-inch full HD screen. The Alcatel Idol3 comes with free JBL in ear earphones worth PKR 7,000. Mobilink also has rebranded its Mobicash mobile service. The operator has introduced ‘JazzCash’ as its brand name for Mobile Financial Services (MFS) in place of Mobicash, The News reports, citing Aamir Ibrahim, Mobilink’s deputy CEO & CCO. This rebranding follows Mobilink’s recent has relaunch of its ‘Jazz’ youth brand. “The reintroduction of Jazz as the face of Mobilink’s digital journey meant a string of communication solutions under the Jazz ecosystem primed for the digital age. In this way, our latest offering, JazzCash, is version 2.0 of our mobile financial service, Mobicash”, Ibrahim said. The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority announced that the auction of the 850 MHz band will take place on 13 June. The information memorandum is currently open for public comment and should be finalized by the end of this month, according to the announced schedule. An information session for prospective bidders will be held 24 May, and applications for participation along with deposits will be due 01 June. The PTA expects to announce the qualified bidders 06 June. The government earlier set a base price of USD 395 million for the remaining 2×10 MHz of spectrum in the 850 MHz band.In the same month Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has launched the Pakistan-China Optical Fiber Cable Project, which is part of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Daily Pakistan reports. The project is expected to improve connectivity in Gilgit-Baltistan. Customers in the area will soon have access to 3G and 4G services, the minister said.

Mobile operator Sky Mobile, working under the Beeline Kyrgyzstan brand, announced that its mobile service revenue was stable at KGS 2.3 billion, as the growth in interconnect and mobile data revenue was offset by a decrease in voice revenue. Mobile operator Takom, working under the beeline Tajikistan brand, announced that its mobile service revenue decreased 27 percent to USD 19 million in the first quarter, on the back of lower incoming international traffic as a result of fewer migrants living abroad due to the macroeconomic slowdown in the region and a weakening local currency. Revenue of Beeline in Uzbekistan fell by 1% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2016– to US$183 million, Vimpelcom Ltd said in its statement. The revenue of the operator in the first quarter of 2016 made up 469 billion soums in the first quarter of 2016, which rose by 15% year-on-year. According to the company, the revenue in mobile communication segment grew by 15% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2016 and reached 465 billion soums. Revenue in fixed-communication segment exceeded 3 billion soums (+4%). Revenue from data transfer service reached 90 billion soums in January-March 2016, growing by 7% compared to 2014. Mobile operator Tele2 Kazakhstan has refreshed three of its tariffs: Large, Cool and Start. The Large tariff plan offers unlimited on-net calls, 280 minutes to other Kazakhstan networks and 20 GB internet traffic for KZT 1,790 per month. The Cool tariff includes unlimited on-net calls, 180 minutes to other networks and 15 GB for KZT 1,290 per month. The Start tariff includes unlimited on-net calls and SMS, 30 minutes to other networks and 2 GB for KZT 890. Subscribers who connect to the tariffs by 16 May are able to use the services under the previous conditions. Armenian fixed operator Ucom has launched new prepaid tariff line U!, reports Arka.am. The line includes four tariffs: U! 1000, U!1500, U!2000 and U!3000. Subscribers can either get free bundles of calls to the operator’s mobile network, or unlimited calls to local networks. The tariffs also contain mobile internet and SMS bundles. Turkmenistan mobile operator Altyn Asyr, working under the Tmcell brand, said subscribers can now use a credit for services option. The service can be booked by calling the operator’s call-centre.Altyn Asyr is a subsidiary of national operator Turkmentelecom, which has a subscribers base of over 3 million. Azerbaijan mobile operator Bakcell has launched a line of new internet packages focused on providing safe internet services for children. The line is being offered alongside the Websense content filtering system from Enginet. The system restricts access to 18 million online sites related to gambling, sex, violations and other sensitive issues.

Qualcomm will start making customised chips for the Chinese market with the joint venture it set up China’s Guizhou province, the Wall Street Journal reported. Production of the chips, which will run servers that power websites and data centres and store company data, is expected to start next year.

Vodafone Turkey offers ticket discounts for Borajet flights

Beeline opens two new offices in Namangan

Beeline, a mobile operator, opened two exclusive offices in Namangan, Uzbekistan, the press service of the company said. Sanjarbek Iminov, director of Eastern regional branch of Unitel, said the company works on developing its external trade network to ensure providing high quality services to subscribers. Kcell expands GSM, 3G network

Kazakshtan mobile operator Kcell, a subsidiary of the TeliaSonera group, has expanded its mobile network in eight regions. Around 11 GSM base stations and 20 3G base stations were deployed in the cities of Aktobe, Atyrau, Aktau and Zhanaozen, as well as in villages in the Almaty, Zhambyl, Western Kazakhstan, Eastern Kazakhstan, Northern Kazakhstan, Aktobe, Atyrau and Mangistau regions.

Vodafone Qatar to cut staff as losses widen

Vodafone Qatar plans to cut its workforce by a tenth, it said on Tuesday, as it reported a sixth straight widening quarterly loss citing competition and waning international call usage. The Vodafone Group affiliate has yet to make a quarterly net profit since ending state-controlled Ooredoo’s domestic monopoly in 2009, but appeared close to breaking even in mid-2014.

Nur Telecom continues LTE, 3G network expansion

Kyrgyzstan mobile operator Nur Telecom, working under the O! brand, launched around 30 3G and LTE base stations in April. New base stations were deployed in the Chuy, Jalal-Abad, Issyk-Kul and Osh regions. Eritrean national mobile coverage reaches 85%

Eritrea Telecommunication Services Corporation (EriTel), the country’s monopoly telecoms operator, has installed a total of 110 base transceiver stations (BTS) to offer mobile network coverage of 85% of the country, it has been confirmed. In an interview with Ministry of Information news service Shabait, Minister of Transportation and Communications, Tesfaselasie Berhane, said that the number of wireless telephony subscribers has reached around 500,000.

Ooredoo Oman shows improvement in data performance

Ooredoo Oman says it has emerged as superior for mobile network speed and quality of service in the annual benchmarking study to analyse the network in key populated areas of the country. Conducted by Global Wireless Solutions (GWS), the test covered three key areas of Oman; Muscat, Salalah and Sohar, for both indoor and outdoor coverage. The GWS report showed that mobile data performance for 3G and 4G (LTE) has improved beyond expectations in these areas.

MTS Turkmenistan revenues down 6% in Q1

Mobile operator MTS Turkmenistan revenues for the first quarter fell 6.4 percent year-on-year to TMT 67 million. OIBDA decreased by 7.7 percent to TMT 24 million. The OIBDA margin declined by 0.5 percentage points, to 35.5 percent. The net profit decreased by 5.8 percent, to TMT 11 million. Capital expenditure totaled RUB 34 million for January-March.

IUT, UZMOBILE sign cooperation agreement

Inha University in Tashkent (IUT) and National mobile communication operator of Uzbekistan UZMOBILE, a branch of Uzbektelecom, signed an agreement of cooperation on 22 May 2016 to develop innovative projects in the sphere of information and communication technologies.

VivaCell changes roaming rates in EACU

Pakistan launches m-banking regulations

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has released ‘Regulationsfor Technical Implementation of Mobile Banking’. The new regulations came into force on 6 May. Pakistan plans 850 MHz auction 13 June

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority announced that the auction of the 850 MHz band will take place on 13 June. The information memorandum is currently open for public comment and should be finalized by the end of this month, according to the announced schedule. An information session for prospective bidders will be held 24 May, and applications for participation along with deposits will be due 01 June. The PTA expects to announce the qualified bidders 06 June. The government earlier set a base price of USD 395 million for the remaining 2×10 MHz of spectrum in the 850 MHz band.

Macau mobile users stable at 1.88 million in April

Macau had 1.88 million mobile telephony users at the end of April, stable with the previous month, according to figures published by the Bureau of Telecommunication Regulation. Of the total, 1.11 million were users of the prepaid 3G service. There were 513,170 users of the postpaid 3G service, the number of postpaid LTE users totalled 161,654, and there were 112,855 users of the prepaid LTE service.

Samsung SAfrica holds football tournament for resellers

Samsung South Africa has announced ithe first edition of the Samsung Galaxy Cup South Africa, a national five-a-side football tournament for retail mobile sales people from the organisation’s various channel partners. This is a global tournament featuring some 28 countries with over 5,000 salespeople participating. The South African leg of the Galaxy Cup (2016) consists of teams entered by partners such as Vodacom, Cell C, MTN and Smollan. The regional tournaments included teams from Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria and Johannesburg. The winners of these teams contested in the national finals that were held on 7 May in Johannesburg.
