Dear Readers,
Pakistan ended March with 134.9 million mobile subscribes, down from 136.6 million at 28 February, according to data from Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA). Mobilink signed a partnership agreement with Dawn whereby Mobilink subscribers will be able to access dawn.com and Dawn applications without any internet charges over Mobilink’s reliable network. Pakistani mobile telephony operator Zong has signed a MoU with Pakistani university Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU). AIOU university staff and students will have access to various Zong products and services, including Zong’s 4G-enabled handsets, installment plans and Wi-Fi connectivity for AIOU headquarters. However Telenor Pakistan launched affordable 3G-enabled handsets for its customers. Pakistani mobile operator Ufone has also launched a top-up promotion for its prepay customers.

Tajikistan mobile operators Babilon-Mobile, Tcell, Megafon Tajikistan and Beeline Tajikistan have announced that they will raise services rates from 1 April, in line with the higher tax. iMax, a subsidiary of Korea Telecom, has begun commercial operation of its LTE TDD network in Tashkent. Turkcell has partnered with Swedish vendor Ericsson to test Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) services in its Istanbul-based laboratory, claiming to be the first Turkish operator to trial the technology. Azerbaijan’s Azercell Telecom applies a special SMS filtration for its customers for the first time in Azerbaijan. The subscribers of the mobile operator Tele2 Kazakhstan has reached 3.7 million in the end of March.

Qualcomm launched the HealthyCircles™ Mobile application, a secure, medical-grade mobile care solution that provides a frictionless on-the-go care experience for consumers via their mobile device. The application is an extension of Qualcomm Life’s web-based HealthyCircles Care Coordination Platform, offering personalized care, patient activation and behavior modification for chronic care patients.

O! Expands LTE Network in Chuy

Kyrgyzstan mobile operator Nur Telecom, working under the O! brand, expanded the coverage of its LTE network with several new base stations in the Chuy region. LTE services are now accessible in the villages of Novopokrovka, Voyenno-Antonovka, Novopavlovka, Nizhnyaya-Ala-Archa, Mayevka, Lebedinovka and Alamedin. The operator provides its LTE services over the 2,600 MHz band.

Nigeria Suspends 2.6 GHz Spectrum Auction

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has postponed the proposed auction of the 2.6 GHz spectrum band “until further notice”. The auction was scheduled to take place in early May, offering 14 lots of 2×5 MHz in the 2.6 GHz band. The reserve price for each lot was set at USD 16 million.

AT&T Unveils 2.3GHz WCS Plans

AT&T Mobility plans to start deploying 2.3GHz Wireless Communications Services (WCS) spectrum for Long Term Evolution (LTE) use commencing this summer, according to Tom Keathley, senior vice president of network and product planning. In an interview with Fierce Wireless, Mr Keathley revealed that the rollout will commence in the coming months and continue into 2016. The spectrum will primarily be used to add extra capacity to AT&T’s network and will be deployed in densely populated, urban areas.

Kcell cuts rate for hidden number definition service

Kazakhstan mobile operator Kcell, controlled by the TeliaSonera group, plans to reduce the rate for its hidden numbers definition service, from 6 April. The service will cost KZT 19 per day instead of KZT 33. The service enables customers to recognise all telephone numbers of subscribers of Kazakshtan mobile operators if the calling subscribers use a hidden number service. The new option is accessible using models and versions of handsets supporting the function.

Rogers launches VoLTE across Canada

Arcep to launch 700MHz auction in July

French telecoms watchdog Arcep has published the results of its two-month public consultation on a strategic review of spectrum for ultra-high speed mobile systems. The regulator said that the document examined the two paths that will help sustain and accelerate the ongoing upgrade of mobile networks: reusing existing frequencies with more efficient technologies; and making new frequencies available, notably those in the 700MHz band.

Wireless LAN Gear Nears $5 Billion in 2014; 802.11ac Access Points Take Off

Worldwide wireless LAN (WLAN) equipment revenue reached $4.9 billion in 2014, growing just 6 percent over 2013 a far cry from the 20 percent plus annual increases of a few years ago, according to Infonetics Research. Almost 1.2 million 802.11ac access points shipped in the fourth quarter of 2014 (4Q14) a quarter of all access points cannibalizing 802.11n rather than the older 802.11a b g access points.

Free Mobile has met its 3G rollout obligation

French telecoms regulator the Autorite de Regulation des Communications Electroniques et des Postes (Arcep) has announced that domestic cellco Free Mobile has met its rollout obligation of covering 75% of the country’s population with its own 3G network, as stipulated by its concession issued on 12 January 2010. Arcep disclosed that Free Mobile’s 3G network coverage was verified through a series of tests carried out between 29 January and 2 March 2015.

Mali considering plans to offer a fourth mobile license

Mali is said to be examining the possibility of launching a tender for a fourth mobile concession later this year, according to Agence Ecofin, which cites local news source Mali Actu. At present there is a moratorium on offering another mobile licence, with the state having agreed this as part of the concession handed to Alpha Telecom back in 2012.

Serbian trio switch on LTE networks

All three Serbian mobile operators have confirmed that they have switched on 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks in quick succession, covering the country’s major population centres. Telekom Austria Group-backedVip Mobile drew first blood on 24 March, turning on its 4G network in Pancevo, which it claimed was the ‘first town fully covered by the 4G signal’. The following week saw connectivity extended to Novi Beograd (New Belgrade), Kopaonik and Zlatibor.

National mobile communication operator Uzmobile postponed launch of its GSM network for five days, the press service of the company said. Armentel launches credit for services promotion

Mobile operator Armentel, working under the Beeline Armenia brand, has introduced a credit for services promotion. The size of the credit has been raised, amounting to AMD 300-9,000, with the promotion valid until 31 May. The service is accessible for the operator’s prepaid mobile subscribers. The sum of the credit depends on the operator’s expenses for mobile services during the last three months. The credit will be valid for three days in Armenia and seven days using roaming services.

Uzmobile postpones GSM network launch to 15 April

Uzbekistan mobile operator Uzmobile, a branch of national operator Uztelecom, has issued a new statement informing that the commercial launch of its GSM network in the city and region of Tashkent has been postponed to 15 April. The earlier launch dates had been in March and then 10 April. The delay has been caused by the need to carry out additional technical works. Uzmobile also provides services over CDMA-450; it plans to also develop its CDMA network in the future.

Megacom cuts internet traffic rate

Kyrgyzstan mobile operator Megacom said that the mobile internet traffic rate per MB has declined by 44 percent on its network since 2013. The traffic rate is currently from KGS 0.17 per MB. The rate is accessible under the Device tariff containing a monthly bundle of 10 GB.

Azercell expands 2G, 3G network footprint

Azercell, Azerbaijan’s largest cellco in terms of subscribers has extended its network coverage, with the deployment of 72 base transceiver stations (BTS) in the first quarter of 2015. The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) of Qatar hosted the 12th meeting of the GCC international roaming working group in DohaCommsMEA reported. The event aims to continue the consultation and coordination on various issues related to international roaming charges. The roaming working group launched a consultation to receive feedback from GCC service providers and other stakeholders on the possibility of regulating international mobile roaming services such as video calls, data, SMS, or MMS.

Ucell launches Accessible Internet tariff

Uzbekistan mobile operator Ucell introduced its new Accessible Internet service. The new tariff can be used over handsets, smartphones and tablets for a daily subscription of USD 0.06. Incoming calls are free, outgoing on-net calls cost USD 0.02 per minute, outgoing calls to other Uzbekistan networks cost USD 0.03 per minute, SMS to Uzbekistan networks are charged USD 0.02, international SMS are USD 0.12 each, MMS within Uzbekistan cost USD 0.05, and international MMS are USD 0.30.

Turk Telekom 1Q15 revenue up 6.6%

Turk Telekom has reported adjusted revenue of TRY3.395 billion (USD1.273 billion) for the three months ended 31 March 2015, up 6.6% from TRY3.185 billion in the same period one year earlier.
