3G Launch Drives Internet Explosion

Cape Verde’s telecoms watchdog the National Communication Agency (ANAC) has unveiled its report for 2013, announcing that wireless population penetration on the archipelago reached 97% last year, with 499,458 mobile subscribers, an increase of 17.4% from the 425,310 reported a year earlier. The number of fixed lines in service, meanwhile, has continued to fall, dipping to 66,177 from 70,220 at end-2012 and a peak of 74,503 in 2011. Internet access in Cape Verde leapt up by 74.7% in 2013, fuelled by massive growth in the 3G market following its inauguration in 2012, with 90% of customers utilizing mobile connections. There were some 234,176 subscribers to internet services at end-2013, compared to 134,049 a year earlier. 3G subscribers made up 212,745 of the total user base – of which 166,108 connected via handsets, whilst the remainder used USB modems – compared to 18,147 DSL users. Indeed, facing competition from wireless alternatives, DSL subscriptions fell year-on-year by 5.0% from 19,103.
