Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has announced discounts for its potential new customers buying 3G EVO Cloud and 3G Nitro Cloud devices. Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited has re-launched its new 3G EVO tab, which is the upgraded version of EVO which was launched back in 2011. Samsung Electronics Co. Azerbaijan’s Bank of Baku has launched its new mobile application for iPhone users. The application enables customers to perform banking operations and receive information on the bank’s services over their mobile devices. Orange Armenia has launched pre-sales of the Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone on its corporate portal and in its branded shops. VivaCell Armenia has introduced a promotion for new wireless internet subscribers.

Qualcomm Technologies has been working with Facebook to optimize Facebook Home and Facebook for Android across all Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. Qualcomm Technologies and interactive media and Internet company of Major League Baseball, MLB Advanced Media (MLBAM) have announced a multi-year engineering and technology agreement, establishing a collaborative effort to survey, plan and optimize mobile network connectivity for fans at supported MLB ballparks. Qualcomm has declared quarterly cash dividend of USD 0.35 per common share to be payable on 26 June to stockholders of record at the close of business on 5 June.

PTCL announced that this new 3 months bundle packages will provide maximum flexibility to the Customer whereby user shall be offered an option to get their FREE cloud devices with 3 months connectivity at even more affordable upfront payment, which better suits their needs and pockets.

Roshan Launches 3G Network in Kabul

Afghanistan’s Roshan has launched its 3G network, with coverage initially available in in Kabul, and then rolled out nationwide. Last month Roshan secured a loan from the International Finance Corporation, in the amount of $147 million, to support the acquisition of the company’s 3G spectrum licenses and continued development of network infrastructure. “It has always been Roshan’s vision to leverage technology and innovation to bridge critical needs gaps and improve the lives of those in the community. 3G Jahaan is the next step in that vision, and a leap forward for the people of Afghanistan,” Karim Khoja, Roshan Chief Executive Officer, said.

New Minister and Secretary Appointed for IT and Telecom Ministry

Dr. Sania Nishter has been appointed as the new Minister for MoITT while Mr. Shahid Rashid is going to remain the Secretary for the IT ministry. Dr. Sania Nishtar did her Ph.D from Kings College London in 2002. She graduated in medicine from Khyber Medical College Peshawar with 16 gold medals, a college record which remains unbroken till date. While on other hands the Secretary of MoIT, Mr. Shahid Rashid was Secretary BOI, before that he remained Secretary Textile Industries and CEO of SME. Mr. Shahid has a graduated from Harvard.

Qualcomm Technologies has been working with Facebook to optimize Facebook Home and Facebook for Android across all Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. These Facebook Home optimizations are designed to enable better overall performance, lower power consumption and improved data efficiency for consumers using Facebook Home and Facebook for Android. Qualcomm Technologies’ technical collaboration with Facebook involved systems-level performance enhancements related to key Snapdragon processor technologies including GPU, CPU and 3G/4G modem.

CDMA Uzbekistan launches new VIP tariffs

CDMA Uzbekistan has launched its new VIP 4000 and VP 2500 tariffs. The VIP 4000 tariff costs USD 40 per month for 4,000 minutes of calls to all Uzbekistan networks, equal to USD 0.02 per minute. Incoming calls from other networks and outgoing on-net calls cost USD 0.01 per minute, and incoming on-net calls are free. Mobile internet is charged USD 0.07 per MB, and SMS are USD 0.02 each. The VIP 2500 tariff costs USD 25 per month for 2,500 minutes and the same rates save for mobile internet rate, which costs USD 0.10 per MB during the day and USD 0.05 per MB at night.

Qualcomm, MLBAM partner for ballpark connectivity

Qualcomm Technologies and interactive media and Internet company of Major League Baseball, MLB Advanced Media (MLBAM) have announced a multi-year engineering and technology agreement, establishing a collaborative effort to survey, plan and optimize mobile network connectivity for fans at supported MLB ballparks. In association with the programme, Qualcomm has been named as an official technology partner for MLBAM, enabling network engineers from QTI to work directly with a major professional sports property to address these connectivity challenges.

MTS Turkmenistan Launches New Tariffs

Mobile operator MTS Turkmenistan will launch its new ‘Course To Zero’ and 12:0 tariffs from 2 May. Under the ‘Course To Zero’ tariff, customers receive 10 minutes of daily calls to all Turkmenistan mobile networks and free incoming calls. The daily subscription costs TMT 0.30. The daily rate of the 12:0 tariff is TMT 0.20, and the plans offers a rate of TMT 0.12 per minute for the first, 11th and 21st minute of on-net calls, with the remaining minutes free.

PTCL launches New 3G EVO Tab

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited has re-launched its new 3G EVO tab, which is the upgraded version of EVO which was launched back in 2011. New tab comes with 1.2GHz Dual Core Snapdragon processor & an Android 4.0 Ice cream Sandwich interface, giving a better user experience. It also has 3G built-in technologies for better internet connectivity and it also enables you to create personal Wi-Fi. PTCL EVO Tab is available at PKR 18,000.

Tele2 Kazakhstan initiates corporate responsibility charter

Mobile operator Tele2 Kazakhstan, in cooperation with the charity fund Reach for Change belonging to the Kinnevik group, has initiated a Corporate Social Responsibility Charter in Kazakhstan. The partners invited other businesses, NGOs and public bodies in Kazakhstan to adopt the code and share experiences in corporate social responsibility.

Uzbekistan to Launch UZTE Smartphones

Uzbekistan is planning to launch smartphones brand under the name of UZTE. A presentation was held during the Dream Cup Tennis Tournament in Tashkent. Initially 10,000 handsets will be produced when the brand will be formally launched in Syrdarya region in May 2013 and later on the plant will produce at its full capacity of 500,000 units per year. The line of smartphones consists of three models GRAND-Х, GRAND-V and GRAND-M, which have good characteristics and affordable price.

Beeline Uzbekistan has reported that it will stop serving subscribers under the Neighbors tariff from 2 May. Subscribers can switch to other tariffs free. Romania Reassigns CDMA450 Spectrum for PMR Users

Romania’s telecoms regulator, Ancom has announced that it is reserving the 450 MHz band in future for use by Public Mobile Radio (PMR). The regulator said that usage rights for the frequencies in the 450MHz band will be granted upon request, in the order of the date of submitting the requests, as long as the radio spectrum resource is sufficient for settling the existing requests for frequency assignation.

Moldtelecom launches HSPA+

Moldtelecom has launched HSPA+ services offering customers theoretical speeds of up to 42Mbps under the company’s ‘Unite’ brand. The offering is available to ‘almost the entire territory of the Republic of Moldova’. Moldtelecom launched an EV-DO-based 3G service offering speeds of up to 2.4Mbps under the Unite brand in 2007, before upgrading to W-CDMA-based 14.4Mbps in 2010. It claims to have over 300,000 subscribers, of which 50,000 are mobile internet users via 3G modems.

Aquiva to deploy LTE

Aquiva Wireless nd VoIP operator, has unveiled plans to deploy Long Term Evolution (LTE). CEO Brian Maphosa declared that the company would invest up to USD80 million over the next three years as it seeks to establish a nationwide presence. Antel to expand LTE, FTTH networks this year

Administracion Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (Antel) plans to expand its LTE network to cover all of the capital Montevideo and other regions of the country. Antel also aims to double the number of homes connected to its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) infrastructure to 500,000 by the end of 2013. China’s ZTE was selected in September 2011 to build Antel’s national gigabit passive optical network (GPON), which is capable of delivering headline speeds of up to 100Mbps. Rollout is ongoing in parts of Montevideo, Atlantida, Colonia, Fray Bentos, Pando, Rivera, Rocha, Salta and San Jose, among towns and cities.

Mobile subs climb 8% in 2012

The total number of mobile subscribers in Kyrgyzstan reached 6.797 million at the end of December 2012, up from 6.277 million twelve months earlier, according to the latest report from the country’s National Communications Agency. The regulator added that wireless population penetration climbed to 122.4%, while service coverage reached 95.7% of the country by year-end. Meanwhile, fixed telephony connections fell from 502,020 at the start of the year to 488,853 as at 31 December 2012.

Size of LTE spectrum clearance task revealed

Russian Long Term Evolution (LTE) licensees MegaFon, Vimpelcom, Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) and Rostelecom have concluded a joint investigation into the current distribution of the 4G-suitable spectrum that they have been promised following July 2012’s tender. The 800MHz lower band frequencies are still occupied by the Russian military, while the 2.5GHz-2.7GHz spectrum is presently allocated to an unspecified number of WiMAX operators covering 390 separate regions, and a total of 38 Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service (MMDS) operators.

Swisscom LTE Coverage Reaches 35% of the Population

Swisscom has announced that its LTE coverage now reaches 35 percent of the Swiss population. Launched last November with coverage in 26 towns and municipalities, the company has since added a further 120 locations to its network. Swisscom aims to enable over 70 percent of the Swiss population to have access to mobile surfing on the LTE network by the end of 2013. As part of the annual budget, Swisscom plans to invest a total of around CHF 1.5 billion (US$1.6 billion) in the mobile network up to 2017. The company added that it has around 300,000 customers now using the LTE service.

Orange France targets 30% LTE coverage by end of 2013

Orange France aims to have one million 4G subscribers by the end of 2013, and an LTE network that covers 30% of the country’s population. The company has revealed that its LTE network is now available in 15 metropolitan areas comprising 50 municipalities. The cellco plans to cover Paris and its inner suburbs with LTE by the end of the year. Orange is also offering customers the opportunity to pay an extra EUR1 (USD1.3) per month to upgrade their 3G plan to an LTE plan. The offer is valid for the remainder of 2013, and from the start of 2014 the upgrade price will rise to EUR10 per month.

Osnova commences LTE testing in Smolensk, Yaroslavl

Osnova Telekom, has commenced testing of its in-deployment Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in Smolensk and Yaroslavl. China’s Huawei and French/US vendor Alcatel-Lucent are thought to have been awarded contracts to roll out the networks. Osnova plans to deploy LTE networks in 20 cities between now and May 2013. Build-out is set to commence in cities with a population of over one million people. Commercial services are expected to be available by October/November 2013.

Virgin launches Colombian MVNO

Virgin Mobile has launched in Colombia offering services over the infrastructure of Telefonica’s local unit Movistar Colombia. The provider signed an MVNO agreement with Movistar in early 2012 and had previously slated H2 2012 and Q1 2013 as prospective deadlines for beginning commercial services.

ATM Mobilis selects Huawei to deploy 3G network

ATM Mobilis has selected Huawei network antennas to deploy its 3G network in the cities of Oran, Skikda and Ouargla, providing its users access to MBB network. Huawei is now set to provide multi-band network antennas for the deployment of ATM Mobilis’ UMTS network.

Globe Telecom completes phase one of USD700m modernization

Globe Telecom has completed the first phase of its USD700million network modernization and transformation programme within its Q1 2013 schedule. According to Emmanuel Estrada, head of network strategy at Globe Network Technology group, the company has successfully replaced 100% of its cell sites across the country with more advanced equipment. Globe Telecom is also in the process of improving its transport and core network elements, he added, while work is also ongoing with the modernisation of its fibre transport infrastructure and switching and core network.

Telenor Will Support 3G Investments by Bangladesh Subsidiary

Norway’s Telenor has committed to investing in 3G services through its Bangladesh subsidiary, Grameenphone. The announcement was made by the Norwegian Trade and Industry Minister Trond Giske who is currently leading a trade mission to the country. The country is due to auction off its long-delayed 3G licenses shortly, as soon as a dispute about the payment of VAT on the license fees is resolved. The proposed 3G licenses include a 15% tax, and there is hence uncertainty about whether the VAT would be reclaimed as usual or not.

Telecom set to launch LTE in Auckland in October

Telecom New Zealand says that it will have Long Term Evolution (LTE) up and running ‘on a large part’ of its Telecom Mobile network in Auckland by October followed by Wellington and Christchurch by Christmas. However the company had not yet decided whether to follow Vodafone and charge a premium for 4G access.

CTU launches new LTE auction plan

Czech Telecommunications Office (CTU) has published its new outline plan for the auctioning off of mobile frequencies suitable to support Long Term Evolution (LTE) services. The CTU’s revised auction plan reserve price of CZK7.4 billion to exceed CZK20 billion, envisages a public consultation period lasting until 8 May. Following this, in June this year the CTU expects to be in a position to announce the deadline for interested parties to submit bids. Further, the regulator now expects bids to be belowCZK10 billion. The CTU now plans to offer frequencies in the 800MHz band – seen as potentially the most lucrative block on offer exclusively to a new market .

Turkish government inks 4G deal

Aselsan Elektronik Sanayi & Ticaret in partnership with Netas Telekomunikasyon and Turk Telekom’s Argela software unit have signed an USD46.8 million contract with the Turkish government to build a 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network designed for civilian and military use. The system is expected to lead to theoretical download speeds of 100Mbps compared to the current 10Mbps-40Mbps offered by 3G technologies.

EE announces plans to boost LTE speeds, capacity

EE has announced plans to double the speed offered by its Long Term Evolution (LTE) services, while it also aims to enhance capacity on its 4G network. Under its plans, EE has said that it will boost headline speeds to 80Mbps, with the average speeds for its 4GEE customers expected to increase to more than 20Mbps. In order to improve capacity on the network the operator has said that it will double the amount of 1800MHz spectrum used for its LTE services from 10MHz to 20MHz.

Slovak Telekom upgrades another 19 areas to DC-HSPA+

Slovak Telekom has announced the expansion of its 42Mbps-capable DC-HSPA+ mobile broadband network footprint to 19 additional locations. The operator’s total number of DC-HSPA+ locations has now reached more than 50.

365 Media announces plans for 4G launch

Having won an 800MHz 4G mobile license last month, 365 Media has announced its plans for launching Long Term Evolution (LTE) services. In the auction 365 Media offered the highest bids for two frequency blocks, under licenses valid for 25 years and ten years respectively. The company paid ISK120 million (USD1 million) for the bandwidth allocations. 365 Media has committed to build a mobile network that extends to 99.5% of the Icelandic population by the end of 2016, with expected peak download speed of 100Mbps.

3 Ireland calls on Samsung for LTE network deployment

Hutchison 3G Ireland (3 Ireland) has selected Samsung Electronics as it sole provider of Long Term Evolution (LTE) Radio Access Network (RAN) and LTE core infrastructure equipment. Under the terms of the deal between the two companies, Samsung will deploy LTE base stations, including all associated systems and network support services, across 3 Ireland’s network nationwide, and a commercial launch of 4G services is expected to take place in the capital Dublin in August 2013.

SC compromises on 3G roaming decision

India’s Supreme Court has granted Bharti Airtel something of a reprieve, allowing the cellco to continue providing 3G services in seven circles where it does not hold a license, though it is forbidden from signing up new users in those areas. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has sought to ban the practice of 3G roaming, recently ordering Bharti, Idea Cellular and Vodafone India to cease the service and issuing fines totaling INR12.5 billion (USD228.44 million) to the trio.

Telus, Bell expand LTE networks, including Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan residents now have a choice of three LTE mobile broadband providers, following the launch this week of 4G coverage in the province by Telus and Bell, who will compete with SaskTel. Regina and Saskatoon are the first cities in the province to get LTE services from Bell and Telus, who share certain infrastructure in their high speed mobile service rollouts.

Telefonica Czech CEO ‘really disappointed’ about revised 4G auction plan

The chief executive of Telefonica O2 CR, Luis Malvido, has said he is ‘really disappointed’ with the rules changes put in place by the national regulator for a revamped auction of 4G-suitable spectrum in the country. The CEO told reporters that the new rules are currently being assessed by his firm and it will provide feedback to the Czech Telecommunication Office (CTU) in due course, but that the terms are far from what it expected. The CTU published its new outline plan for the auctioning off of mobile frequencies suitable to support Long Term Evolution (LTE) services, which will hopefully result in the launch of a fourth mobile network operator in the country.

MegaFon introduces LTE handsets, VTB seeks 3G, 4G licences for Tele2

MegaFon, which offers Long Term Evolution agreement with sister company Yota, has reportedly introduced its first LTE-suitable handset. The unspecified device is available to customers in all 81 cities where the network is currently up and running. Introducing the handset, the company reaffirmed its commitment to extending its 4G network on a nationwide basis; in accordance with the conditions of its license MegaFon must invest at least RUB15 billion (USD458 million) in its network deployment on an annual basis until its rollout is complete.

Wind taps Huawei, Sirti for EUR1bnLTE rollout

Wind Telecomunicazioni (Wind Italy) has announced that it will spend EUR1 billion (USD1.3 billion) on the deployment of its long awaited 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network over the course of the next five years. Omnitel brings 3G to Vilnius-Kaunas motorway

Lithuanian mobile operator Omnitel has upgraded and expanded its 3G network alongside the motorway connecting Vilnius and Kaunas cities. A total 38 new 3G base stations were deployed alongside the busiest motorway in the country, and existing base stations were also upgraded.

Vodafone NL picks OpenCloud to support LTE launch

Vodafone’s Dutch mobile unit has selected telecoms software developer OpenCloud to supply it with its open-standards based ‘Rhino’ products to support its imminent launch of 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) services. OpenCloud will supply the cellco with its proprietary Rhino service integration server (SIS) service-broker, service capability interaction manager (SCIM) and Rhino Sentinel. According to the vendor, the suite of products will enable Vodafone NL ‘to converge services between legacy GSM and LTE domains in order to ensure continuity of service for all Vodafone’s subscribers regardless of handset capabilities and LTE coverage’.

T-Mobile Czech picks Cisco for LTE equipment

T-Mobile Czech Republic has revealed that it has selected Cisco Systems’ ASR 5000 router to act as the core of its fourth-generation Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, as well as managing mobile traffic on its existing 2G and 3G infrastructure. The cellco says the new equipment will enable it to offer optimized video services as well as feature-rich multimedia applications. The ASR 5000 solution will be implemented during the course of 2013 and will result in increased bandwidth, new intelligent network services and faster access to the mobile internet.

Ooredoo launches commercial 4G network

Ooredoo has announced the official launch of its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband network, making commercial 4G data services available for USB modem/mobile hotspot ‘My-Fi’ device users. With 4G coverage initially available in the capital Doha and the Sealine district, Ooredoo is expanding LTE services on a phased basis, and plans to activate batches of additional LTE base stations on a monthly basis throughout the year. Ooredoo is rolling out the 800MHz/2600MHz network in areas including The Pearl-Qatar, Katara Cultural Village, West Bay, the Corniche, and Sealine Beach Resort, and within 2014 it expects to cover all inhabited areas of Qatar.

SingTel Mobile Confirms Nationwide Coverage for LTE

SingTel Mobile has completed the nationwide deployment of its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, joining rival M1 Limited (M1) which has already achieved that feat. In a press release, the operator said that the new network can support maximum data speeds of 150Mbps, street-level coverage has been increased to 95% of the population while indoor coverage is now available in more than 550 buildings, including shopping malls, hotels and other commercial centres.

EE’s LTE subscribers reach 318,000

EE UK has issued a performance update for the three months ended 31 March 2013, with the cellco revealing that some five months after introducing Long Term Evolution (LTE) commercially, some 318,000 customers had signed up to its 4G services. EE highlighted the fact that LTE subscribers now account for 2.3% of its total post-paid subscriber base. As it looks to boost 4G uptakes further, the operator has also confirmed that it plans to expand its LTE footprint to a total of 80 towns and cities, representing 55% of the population, by end-June 2013, with coverage expected to rise to more than 70% by the end of this year.

SK Telecom Surpasses 10m LTE Subscriber Milestone

Tele2 Kazakhstan Revenues Almost Double to SEK 289 mln in Q1

Tele2 Kazakhstan has net sales grown to SEK 289 million in the first quarter from SEK 165 million in the year-ago quarter. In the same quarter, LBITDA narrowed to SEK 45 million from LBITDA of SEK 97 million in Q1 2012. The intensive growth of mobile voice and data traffic consumption was maintained during the quarter. Customer intake amounted to 252,000 during the quarter, despite a review of the customer base resulting in 140,000 customers being defined as inactive on top of normal churn. Tele2 Kazakhstan’s total customer base reached 3.664 million by the end of Q1.

Manaco Telecom Inks LTE Deal with Huawei

Facebook Shows Off New OS Overlay for Android Smartphones

Facebook has launched its new Android toy – called “Home”. Once loaded into the handset, the home screen is replaced by Facebook’s own “Cover feed” that contains updates from the users Facebook friends. Another function is known as “chat heads” that ties other mobile apps and messaging platforms into the Facebook service. The new software is currently designed to work on the HTC One X, HTC One X+, Samsung Galaxy S III and Samsung Galaxy Note II. It will also work on the forthcoming HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4, and on more devices in the coming months.

Swisscom expands its LTE Footprints to 159 Locations

Swisscom has announced that it has expanded the footprint of its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to 159 locations, from 26 in November last year, when it commercially launched the platform. The infrastructure now covers some 35% of the population, and Swisscom claims that around 300,000 subscribers currently use 4G-compatible smartphones, enabling them to ‘benefit directly from the higher capacity, greater speed and shorter reaction times of the new network.’ The incumbent is looking to expand coverage to 70% by the end of 2013 and plans to invest CHF1.5 billion (USD1.59 billion) in its mobile network up to 2017.

Google in $1 Billion Talks to Buy WhatsApp

Google is reported to be in talks to buy the OTT messaging vendor, WhatsApp for a price in the region of US$1 billion. The messaging app claims a customer base of over 300 million users. The app is believed to generate somewhere around $100 million in annual revenues. The company charges a flat fee for use after the first year. Both Google and Facebook have been rumoured to have wanted to buy the company in the past, but this appears to be a more concrete development.

Brazilian Ministry Sees LTE-450 Becoming a Standard Technology within Months

Brazil’s Ministry of Communications has released a statement saying that it expects the standardization of the 450MHz band for 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology to take place ‘in the coming months’. The ministry said that Brazil wants to set out its position as a global reference point for LTE-450 technology, something it claims has ‘no precedents’ within the telecoms industry. To date, Brazil has invested BRL40 million (USD20.2 million) into domestic ICT research group CPqD, through its development fund Funttel, which is coordinating research into LTE.

Xavier Niel Plans to ‘Surprise’ Market If Iliad Enters 4G Sphere

Xavier Niel, the founder of French telco Iliad which markets mobile services through its Free Mobile unit, has said that his company plans to ‘surprise the market’ if and when it takes the plunge into the country’s fledgling 4G market. Niel said that the group will make an announcement when it is ready, saying cryptically: ‘We will try to provide a surprise one day’. Despite the company’s wireless operations being less than a year old, they already account for more than a quarter of the group’s sales. Even more impressively, during the fourth quarter of 2012, Iliad’s 800,000 net wireless additions represented a 67% share of the entire country’s new subscribers during that period.

T-Mobile Netherlands reportedly plans to offer its subscribers access to its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network with no additional cost involved. Qualcomm has declared quarterly cash dividend of USD 0.35 per common share to be payable on 26 June to stockholders of record at the close of business on 5 June. The dividend rate represents a 40 percent increase above the prior quarterly dividend.

R Cable Trials LTE With Alcatel-Lucent

Alcatel-Lucent and cable operator R have conducted a trial of 4G LTE mobile technology in Galicia using R’s 2600MHz wireless frequency license, with the aim of developing advanced ‘next generation entertainment and communication services such as on demand video, catch up TV and nomadic internet connectivity’, according to a press release. The trial involves providing LTE coverage in three areas of Galicia with FDD and TDD macro cells.

AIS Soft-Launches 3G Network with 200,000 Customers

AIS has soft-launched its new 3G network on the 2.1Ghz spectrum the company was recently allocated in an auction. The company will offer 200,000 existing customers access to the new service in advance of the main commercial launch on the 8th May. The network currently covers main cities in 18 provinces and inner Bangkok. The company is looking to transfer around 10 million of its nearly 36 million customers over to the new 3G network by the end of this year.

Pakistan Ends 2012 With 1.4 Million m-banking Accounts

Mobile banking in Pakistan has witnessed a remarkable growth in recent times as the number of m-wallets accounts reached 1.4 million in 2012. It is an increase of almost 156% as compared to previous years. According to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority the increase of active accounts from 54% to 66% is mainly due to increase in the small transaction m-banking accounts by UBL Omni, Telenor’s ‘Easypaisa’ launched in October 2009 and United Bank Limited (UBL) with ‘Omni’ initiated in April 2010 took the m-banking initiative and contributed in the growth of mobile banking in Pakistan.

UAE’s Du to Expand Hybrid Power Supplies for Base Stations

Du is deploying an addition 72 base stations powered by off-grid electricity supplies. Du has decided to convert all possible off-grid sites to hybrid power with the deployment of the Heliocentris’ hardware. With the continued implementation of these solutions, Du expects a yearly saving in fuel consumption of more than 3 million litres and reduction in CO2 emissions of more than 12,000 tonnes, by end of 2014. The conversion project will be managed by Heliocentris Energy FZE, located in Dubai.

Android 4.1 Update Available For AT&T LG Escape

AT&T has announced that the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update is currently available for the LG Escape. Jelly Bean features several enhancements, including changes to the notification display that groups updates from the same application together and allows users to expand or collapse notifications. Customers will also be able to view the full text of an SMS message and the full photo of an MMS in the notification window. AT&T DriveMode is also now available through the Jelly Bean update.

Google Releases Glass Specs

Google has finally unwrapped Google Glass. Full specs for Glass hardware has now been posted by Google. Its explorer edition will be available for $ 15, 00. The big display is the highlight of the device that “is the equivalent of a 25 inch high-definition screen from eight feet away”. The first version of Glass will also feature a 5 megapixel camera, 16GB of Flash storage of which 12GB will be usable (and synced with Google’s cloud storage service), wi-fi standard 802.11b/g and Bluetooth. The coolest feature, however, is probably the bone conduction transducer, which will transmit sound from Glass to the inner ear through the bones of the wearer’s skull.

“BadNews” Android Malware Detected In Google Play

Mobile Security Company, Lookout discovered a new malware in 32 apps published by four different developers in Google Play market. More than half of these applications were Russian. BadNews is designed to create SMS fraud in Russian Federation and neighboring countries like Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Armenia. According to Google Play statistics, the combined affected applications have been downloaded between 2,000,000 – 9,000,000 times. Lookout notified Google about the malware and they promptly removed all apps.

Kcell Grows Q1 Profits 2.5%

Kcell recorded a net income in the first quarter of KZD 13.66 billion, up 2.5 percent from KZD 13.33 billion in the year-ago quarter. Revenues were KZT 43.05 billion, up 4 percent from KZT 41.40 billion a year earlier as voice revenues rose 1.1 percent to KZT 33.29 billion, data revenues grew 37.9 percent to KZT 5.67 billion, and revenues from VAS went up 1.7 percent to KZD 3.92 billion. Other revenue decreased 66.8 percent to KZT 168 million owing to the decrease in sales of handsets and USB modems. During the quarter, Kcell added 310,000 new subscribers to bring its total base to 13.8 million.

Cellular One taps Ericsson for 3G, 4G upgrade

Ericsson has been selected by Cellular One to upgrade its entire network to 3G and expand its existing number of base stations by 50%. The Swedish vendor will also deploy its MINI-LINK microwave products to provide increased backhaul capacity. The upgrade will result in increased coverage within previously underserved areas across north-east Arizona and New Mexico, with some areas also receiving an upgrade to support 4G technology. The first 3G sites are scheduled to come online within the next six months.

Bermuda’s North Rock seeks to deploy nation-wide LTE network

North Rock Communications has submitted a request to the country’s new Regulatory Authority (RA), seeking a licence and spectrum to provide a new mobile service in the country. The company is understood to be considering plans to launch a new island-wide mobile network in Bermuda, which it says will ‘significantly improve’ telecoms services there. The company is currently waiting to hear from the RA regarding its application for frequency spectrum.

Kazakhstan’s Kcell Posts Rise in Profits and Revenues

Kazakhstan’s Kcell has announced its first-quarter financial results, and reported that its revenues rose by 4 percent to reach KZT 43 billion (US$279 million), while net income also rose, by 2.5 percent to KZT 13.7 billion (US$8.9 million). During the quarter the subscriber base increased by 310,000 to 13.8 million.

Zain Bahrain launches 4G network

Zain Bahrain has announced the launch of its Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. Zain Bahrain’s general manager, Mohammed Zainalabedin, told reporters that the company has invested USD100 million in network deployments, part of which has been spent on the rollout of LTE. At the end of 2012 Zain’s share of Bahrain’s wireless subscriber market stood at 31.5%, just behind second placed operator Viva (32.5%) and Batelco (35.9%).

KT LTE network generates KZT100m, claims 30,000 4G subs

Kazakhtelecom (KT) has revealed that its Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, which launched in late-December 2012 in Almaty and Astana, has generated revenues of KZT100 million (USD651,606) in the three months ended 31 March 2013. In addition, company chairman Kuanyshbek Yessekeyev said that the company’s cellular subsidiary Altel already has 30,000 subscribers to its 4G service, all of whom can access downlink transmission speeds of 30Mbps. Yessekeyev also provided an update regarding the KT’s in-deployment fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network. He said the rollout, which will eventually encompass 563,000 apartment buildings nationwide, is scheduled for completion in 2014.

Celcom introduces commercial LTE services in Klang Valley

Celcom Axiata has launched commercial LTE services initially deploying around 70 4G-ready sites in the Klang Valley, with this figure expected to rise to around 100 by next month. The initial rollout focus, Celcom has said, will be the Klang Valley, Johor and Penang, although a number of other areas have been earmarked for coverage. The cellco aims to have some 300 LTE-enabled sites up and running by the end of 2015, while nationwide coverage, via around 1,500 sites, is expected by end-2015. Access to the 4G network is initially restricted to USB modem only, with Celcom offering an LTE modem and three month’s subscription for MYR199 (USD64) as a launch offer for the first 1,000 customers to sign up.

Further delay to Bangladesh’s 3G licence auction

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is proposing that the country’s 3G licence auction be postponed until July 2013. The reason stated for the postponement is the ongoing altercation between the government and domestic mobile network operators over taxes on SIM cards and VAT charges. Cellcos have also called for changes in taxation on SIM card sales, arguing that the current tax of BDT600 (USD7.7) per SIM card needs to be reduced and applied per account in order to avoid repeat charges if a customer’s SIM is lost or faulty.

Dhiraagu launches HSPA+

Dhivehi Raajjeyge Gulhun (Dhiraagu) has launched a HSPA+ network, enabling subscribers to benefit from faster mobile broadband speeds across the country. The launch followed testing of the technology in the greater Male area, while Dhiraagu has also begun preparing its mobile network for 4G LTE. Dhiraagu’s sole competitor in the mobile market, Wataniya Telecom Maldives, launched its own W-CDMA/HSDPA network in Male in April 2008, and is also understood to be rolling out HSPA+ technology.

O2 poised for Dusseldorf LTElaunch

Telefonica Germany has launched its LTEnetwork in Dusseldorf, the capital city of North Rhine-Westphalia. Belarusian minister confirms plans for LTE-A tests in 2013

Belarusian communications and IT minister Nikolai Pantelei has said that the country will begin testing fourth-generation LTE Advanced (LTE-A) services in 2013. The trials will be carried out by domestic mobile operator MTS Belarus, a joint venture between the government and MTS, and Belarusian cloud technology firm becloud. The announcement comes in the wake of a statement last month from both companies which said that they were discussing a joint LTE development plan. The LTE-A testing will begin later this year.

Smart extends LTEfootprint; launches Galaxy S4 LTEplans

MTN activates Uganda’s first LTE network

MTN Uganda has announced the launch of the nation’s first 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in Kampala. 20 base stations were upgraded to LTE at launch, though the cellco plans to extend the network, which is capable of theoretical maximum download speeds of 100Mbps, to other towns in the near future. Cosmote launches LTE in a number of markets

Cosmote Romania has announced the launch of commercial LTE services in Bucharest, Otopeni, Ploiesti, Cluj, Iasi, Sinaia, Busteni and Predeal. Initially the cellco’s LTE network is accessible via two USB dongles, each priced at RON99 (USD29.5) and the Samsung Galaxy Note LTE 10.1 tablet, costingRON1, 369. The 4G launch allows end users to experience transmission speeds of up to 75Mbps/37.5Mbps (down/uplink). Cosmote currently offers DC-HSPA+ speeds of up to 43.2Mbps in 159 cities and over 1,000 localities across Romania, covering over 49.5% of the population. In addition, 21.6Mbps HSPA+ technology is offered in a total of 189 cities, giving Cosmote 3G coverage of 73% of the population.

MTN declared dominant player in mobile voice market

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has published its findings from the ‘Study of the Assessment of the Level of Competition in Nigerian Telecommunications Industry’, which it began in June 2012. The regulator has determined that MTN Nigeria is a dominant player in the mobile voice segment, with a market share of approximately 44%. Meanwhile, MTN and Globacom have both been designated as dominant operators in the wholesale leased lines and transmission capacity sub-segment of the upstream market. The regulator’s determinations will take effect from 1 May 2013 and will remain valid and binding for the services specified in relevant market segments until further review by the NCC.

Cosmote Launches LTE Services in Romania

Cosmote has commercially launched its LTE network, with coverage initially available in Bucharest (the Northern area) and Otopeni, Ploiesti, Cluj, Iasi and in the touristic areas of Sinaia, Busteni, Predeal. The service is currently limited to working on USB modems or tablets, not smartphones though. The company is charging a fee of EUR5 per month on top of the existing tariffs for access to the 4G service. The company’s existing 3G service covers about 75% of the population, with HSPA+ available in most cities.

BT Wins 4G Backhaul Contract from O2 UK

British Telecom (BT) has signed a new ten year deal with Telefonica UK to support the introduction of 4G services for O2 customers. Under the terms of the deal, BT will build a new high capacity transmission networks .BT will also provide 2O2 with a sizeable increase in backhaul capacity by providing mobile backhaul links between its mobile base stations and the new transmission network. Furthermore, the new transmission network will help 2O2 migrate from legacy TDM to Ethernet based IP services.

Nokia Siemens Networks Wins Brazilian LTE Deployment Contract

TIM Brasil has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to deploy an LTE network layer on top of the operator’s existing 2G and 3G networks in the 2.6 GHz frequency band. Under the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will deliver an LTE radio access network featuring its Flexi Multiradio Base Stations. NSN will also upgrade TIM Brasil’s NetAct network management system, and will deliver its Intelligent Self Organizing Networks (iSON) capability for increased automation and faster rollout. Implementation of the LTE network will be done on a city-by-city basis in preparation for the Confederations Cup 2013 and Football World Cup 2014 events.

Huawei, Touch complete LTE carrier aggregation field trial

Huawei and Touch have completed a field trial of LTE FDD 800MHz/1800MHz carrier aggregation (CA) technology on Touch’s live network. The field trial achieved a maximum of 250 Mbps download throughput. CA technology includes intra-band and inter-band CA, and is an essential technology for LTE-Advanced.

Ericsson feels qualified optimism for equipment market

US demand and China’s mobile network upgrade are expected to support telecom equipment growth this year. Ericsson chairman Leif Johansson told journalists in Hainan, China, during his attendance of the Boao Forum for Asia. Johansson sees overall demand this year as being “stable and slightly on the positive side”. China and northeast Asia represented around 17 percent of Ericsson revenues in 2012. Ericsson recently announced contracts from Russia’s VimpelCom and India’s Reliance Communications.

Samsung Shows Off New Smartphone/Tablet Hybid

Samsung Electronics has shown off a new 6.3-inch tablet/smartphone hybrid — the Galaxy Mega. ¬The new “phablet” offers a mix of smartphone and tablet features such as a split screen, multitasking between video and other apps and more. The Galaxy Mega is equipped with an enhanced 8 megapixel rear-facing camera with a 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera, along with a variety of camera modes. The company is also launching a 5.8-inch version of the same device. Both devices will be available globally beginning in May from Europe and Russia.

Ericsson Tests Low-Energy Base Station in Egypt

Ericsson has successfully tested Psi-Coverage, an energy-saving solution in the Vodafone Egypt Network. In the First Field Implementation (FFI), Psi-Coverage lowered energy consumption by 40 percent as a result of reducing the amount of radios used for a 3G base station (from 3 to 1) within the network. The Ericsson-unique solution eliminates the need for three radios in a coverage area, and instead uses one radio unit that connects three antennas together to provide coverage without the power usage that is necessary in larger cities.

ZTE Successfully Tests TD-LTE One-Line Base Stations

ZTE has completed testing of its TD-LTE One-Line base stations. The base stations are the industry’s first TD-LTE commercial solution that supports an LTE-Advanced relay function. The new base stations were tested by the Guangzhou branch of China Mobile. ZTE says that it tested its TD-LTE One-Line base stations in three typical scenarios – a blind spot, outdoor covering indoor, and outdoor remote coverage. The test data shows that deployment of the TD-LTE One-Line base stations can improve performance on cell edges by 200 percent and edge coverage by 50 percent.

Ericsson Opens New Service Delivery Facility in Lebanon

Ericsson is expanding its existing offices in Beirut, Lebanon to boost its capacity to support BSS capabilities. Ericsson said that there been a recent uptake of its managed BSS services and solutions across the region. In order to cater for this demand globally, Ericsson has decided to establish a new office facility for Global Service Delivery in Lebanon.

Nokia Siemens Networks Wins Singapore 3G Upgrade Contract

Singapore’s M1 has commissioned Nokia Siemens Networks to strengthen its voice core network and expand its 3G network by reframing the GSM 900MHz band. Under the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide its Single RAN, coupled with its Multicontroller RNC and Liquid Radio software. As part of the Liquid Core portfolio, the company will also provide its ATCA-based open Mobile Switching Center Server (MSS) and open Media Gateway (MGW). In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide its Subscriber Data Management Platform.

Ericsson Wins Icelandic 3G and LTE Deployment Contract

Síminn has awarded a contract to Ericsson to upgrade its 3G network and prepare for 4G roll-outs across Iceland. Under the five-year agreement, Ericsson will be the supplier of 4G/3G/2G radio access equipment and the common core network. Ericsson will also expand all relevant network software and deliver a range of professional services, including project management, systems integration and support.

Ericsson Expanding, Upgrading Orange 4G/3G/2G Networks

Ericsson has been installing RBS 6000 multi-standard radio base stations throughout Greater Paris, as well as in the south-west and north-east regions of France. The company has been improving existing 2G and 3G networks of Orange France at more than 15,000 sites in France since 2010, and in June 2012 started the deployment of 4G LTE to further upgrade the operator’s networks. According to Franck Bouetard, Head of Ericsson in France, the installation of the radio base stations for deployment of LTE in the 2.6GHz and 800MHz bands is to ensure the achievement of France Telecom-Orange’s 4G service rollout goals in 2013.

ZTE Ships 500 Millionth Mobile Devices

China’s ZTE celebrated the 15th anniversary of its terminals division with the production of the company’s 500 millionth handset, becoming the first Chinese mobile device brand to achieve the landmark. The company has also outlined the terminals division’s strategies to drive further growth. While it took ZTE 10 years to manufacture 100 million handsets after establishing the terminals division in 1998, only five years were required for volumes to grow from 100 million to 500 million.

ZTE Doubled its Smartphone Sales in 2012

ZTE has exceeded its own target by more than doubling shipments of smartphones in 2012. The strong growth in ZTE’s smartphone business helped offset decreasing sales of feature phone products. The growth in smartphone sales also helped ZTE post a gross profit margin of 16.8% in its terminals division in 2012, an improvement of 1.6 percentage points compared to a year earlier. The strong smartphone sales performance helped ZTE record RMB 1.87 billion of operating cash flow in 2012.
