The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued its Information Memorandum (IM) for its planned sale of spectrum in the 2100MHz, 1800MHz and 850MHz bands. Ufone has become successful in achieving ISO 9001:2008 certification for COPS. Qualcomm has shown off its first eight core smartphone chips with integrated LTE and 64 bit capabilities. The Snapdragon 615 chipset is the mobile industry’s first commercially announced octa-core solution with integrated LTE and 64-bit capabilities, while the Snapdragon 610 chipset supports LTE and 64-bit capabilities using quad-core processing. Ericsson and Qualcomm have successfully demonstrated Dual Carrier High Speed Uplink Packet Access DC HSUPA for the first time on a commercial smartphone.

Uzbek communication committee, NIPA hold negotiations

The leadership of the State Committee of Communication, information and telecommunication technologies held a meeting with the President of National Agency for the Promotion of Information Technologies of the Republic of Korea (NIPA). During the meeting, the sides underlined close cooperation between the Uzbek committee and NIPA, which is carried out in line with the memorandum, signed between two bodies in 2012. The sides discussed perspectives of development cooperation on development of software industry, development of software products, etc.

PTA Publishes Outline for Spectrum Sale

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued its Information Memorandum (IM) for its planned sale of spectrum in the 2100MHz, 1800MHz and 850MHz bands. The watchdog is auctioning 2×30MHz in the 2100MHz range, 2×20MHz in the 1800MHz band and 2×7.38MHz in the 850MHz range. Reserve prices for each 2×10MHz block were set atUSD295 million for the 2100MHz band, USD210 million for the 1800MHz frequencies and USD291 million for the 850MHz range. Participants are required to submit offers for a minimum of 2×10MHz in the 2100MHz range, but may bid for more in multiples of 2×5MHz. Only successful bidders of 2100MHz spectrum will be qualified to obtain 1800MHz frequencies. A mock auction will be held on 3 April, followed by the auction proper on 7 April.

Aftel launches GSM, 3G services

State-backed telco Afghan Telecom (Aftel) has inaugurated GSM and 3G services in Kabul and ten other, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) announced. The company has invested USD65 million on the deployment and intends to spend a further USD100 million to expand the service nationwide. Aftel’s 3G services are sold under the ‘SALAM’ brand, with data charged at AFN250 (USD4.37) for 1GB, AFN600 for 3GB or AFN900 for 5GB whilst calls cost AFN0.04 per second.

National mobile communication operator to create GSM network

National mobile communication operator Uzmobile will develop a network of mobile communication network on the base of GSM standard till the end of 2017. President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a resolution “On measures on organization of activity of national operator of mobile communication” on 12 February 2014. Uzbekistan creates national operator of mobile communication on the base of Uzmobile, a branch of the joint stock company “Uzbektelecom”. New network of GSM standard will be created on the base of frequency resources, which are earlier used by Uzdunrobita (subsidiary of MTS in Uzbekistan). At the same time, Uzmobile will continue to render mobile communication service on CDMA-450 standards.

Uzbektelecom to spin off new GSM operator

State-backed telco Uzbektelecom has announced that it will use the frequencies relinquished by defunct operator MTS Uzbekistan to deploy its own GSM network. The telco, which currently offers wireless services via its ‘Uzmobile’ unit, will continue to operate its existing CDMA-450 network in parallel with the new GSM platform. Rollout will start this year with the deployment of 1,020 base stations in Tashkent, along with 500 sets of radio relay equipment, a communication station and a billing system for two million numbers. In 2015 Uzmobile plans to install a further 1,994 towers to cover the regional centres of Uzbekistan, whilst capacity will be increased to eight million lines. A third phase, to be completed by the end of 2017, will see Uzmobile install 3,986 more base stations to cover the nation’s other towns and villages. These will be supported by stand-alone solar power generators to limit the dependence on expensive local petrol generators in remote areas.

PTCL Signs Agreement to Build One of the Largest Submarine Cable System

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), the largest ICT service provider in Pakistan, is investing in one of the largest international submarine cable consortium system, in collaboration with the leading telecom operator of the world. The cable system encompasses a multimillion dollar investment and will enable Pakistan to meet its future information communications needs. Sayyed Muhammad Imran Ali, PTCL Executive Vice President (EVP) International Business The new cable system, Asia Africa Europe (AAE-1), will be adding terabits of bandwidth to PTCL’s international capacity, besides building redundancy to its existing international infrastructure on eastern and western side of the Arabian Sea.

Telecom Mongolia needs USD1.9bn for LTE rollout

Fixed line incumbent Telecom Mongolia is looking into entering the domestic wireless market by deploying a 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in the country. In order to implement the project, the company needs total investment of around USD1.9 billion, of which around USD500million will be provided by South Korean co-owner KT Corp. The telco hopes to offer LTE access in capital city Ulaanbaatar by mid-2015, with all 21 Mongolian provinces to be covered by 2018.

Ucell’s Net Sales Exceeds US$478.16m in 2013

Net sales of mobile communication operator Ucell grew by 31.62% year-on-year to 3.118 billion Sweden kronor (over US$478.163 million) in 2013. According to TeliaSonera, net sales of Ucell made up 821 million Sweden kronor (about US$126.926 million) in the fourth quarter of 2013, which rose by 9.61% year-on-year. EBITDA (grew from 904 million Sweden kronor (US$138.612 million) in 2012 to 1.68 billion Sweden kronor (US$257.569 million) in 2013. EBITDA rose from 322 million Sweden kronor ($49.362 million) to 403 million Sweden kronor ($61.776 million) (+25.15%). According to the company, MOU (average monthly minutes of usage per subscriber) made up 305 minutes per month in 2013 against 314 minutes per month in 2012.

PTCL Announces Financial Results of 2013

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has posted impressive financial results in FY2013. According to the PTCL Board of Director’s announcement, the PTCL Group’s revenue for FY2013 stood at a record amount of PKR 131.2 billion (USD 1.29 billion), while Group’s net-profit stood at PKR. 15.8 billion (USD 155.02 million). The company posted revenues amounting to PKR. 81.1 billion, while a net profit of PKR. 12.7 billion was also reported. The company has also declared a final cash dividend of Re. 1 per share for the year ended, in addition to already paid interim dividend of Re.1 per share in July 2013. Thus the collective dividend for FY2013 stood at PKR 2 per share.

Azercell Unifies International Call Rates

Azerbaijan mobile operator Azercell has introduced a single rate for international calls, lowering prices significantly. Calls to the CIS countries and Baltic States are offered at the earlier AZN 0.32 per minute, while calls to Iran and Turkey dropped from AZN 0.43 per minute to AZN 0.32. Calls to all other states dropped from AZN 0.50 to AZN 0.32 per minute. The rates apply on all tariff plans from the operator. An additional 25 percent discount is offered for international calls at weekends, holidays and at night.

Beeline Uzbekistan Activates Voicemail In Fergana Valley

Mobile operator Beeline Uzbekistan reported that its voice messaging service has become accessible for subscribers in the Fergana valley. Activation of the service isn’t necessary, as it will be offered by default when subscribing to voice services from the operator and no subscription fee is required. Sending a voice message costs USD 0.03 and the message storage box can save up to 10 messages.

Armenian-American Venture Presents First Tablet

The American-Armenian joint venture Technology and Science Dynamics, working under the Amtab Technologies brand, has presented the Amtab tablet. The company claims that the device is the first tablet designed in Armenia. The Android tablet, supporting 3G and Wi-Fi, will be offered in four versions with 7.9-inch, 9-inch, 9.7-inch or 10.1-inch screens. The devices are assembled in the US and Hong Kong. The company plans to produce 10,000 devices annualy at the initial stage, raising the annual output to 50,000 tablets gradually. The tablet will cost around USD 180.

Tesco Mobile Drops Additional Charge for 4G

British mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Tesco Mobile has announced that it is now offering 4G connectivity to its customer at no additional cost. When the operator initially introduced 4G back in October last year it revealed that customer would pay GBP2.50 (USD4.12) per month on top of their regular tariff to boost their mobile broadband speeds. However, saying it was keen to offer more customer the opportunity to benefit from the higher speeds offered by LTE technology, Tesco Mobile confirmed that as of 30 January 2014 it is no longer charging a premium for 4G for both pre- and post-paid customer.

Qualcomm and Deutsche Telekom Collaborate on LTE-Direct Operator Trials

Qualcomm and Deutsche Telekom are to collaborate on the first LTE Direct operator trial in Germany. LTE Direct is expected to be an operator owned platform that enables the next generation of proximity based services. This platform operates in licensed spectrum and relies on the LTE physical layer. The upcoming trial would be enabled by trial devices from Qualcomm, Samsung, and LTE Direct enabled base stations. Standardization of LTE Direct in a 3GPP Release 12 is expected to be completed at the end of this year.

Morocco’s Meditel Announces 3G Network Upgrade Plans

Morocco based mobile network operator, Medi Telecom (Meditel) has plans to invest EUR350 million (US$480 million) in network upgrades over the next three years. The company is aiming to retain its second place in the market, which is nearly tied with Inwi and will be deploying 3G coverage to all Moroccan cities. The company has been testing a migration to a Single RAN based on equipment supplied by Huawei and Ericsson. Tests were carried out in Essaouira and Taroudant, and will be extended to Casablanca, Tangiers and Marrakech by this April.

Blu Telecoms to launch LTE in 2014

Blu Telecoms (formerly G-Kwik net), one of the Ghanaian companies in possession of 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE)-suitable spectrum, is reportedly planning to launch commercial operations in 2014. In February 2013 Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA) issued three technology-neutral broadband wireless access (BWA) licenses in the 2500MHz to 2690MHz band that allow for the provision of 4G services. Surf Line, Gold Key Properties and G-Kwik net each paid USD6 million for the BWA concessions, which allow them to launch LTE or WiMAX data-only services. Under the terms set out by their authorizations, the licensees must launch their respective networks by end-November 2014; all three companies need to cover 50% of all districts in five years. Subsequently, the three companies will be allowed to offer voice services over their 4G networks after six years of operation.

Sprint, NSN Achieve 2.6Gbps in TD-LTE Trial

US mobile giant Sprint and Finnish equipment vendor Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) have achieved downlink transmission speeds of 2.6Gbps over the former’s Time-Division Long Term Evolution (TD-LTE) network, it has been revealed, beating the previous 1.6Gbps record. The trial took place at NSN’s Mountain View facility in California using the commercially-available Flexi Multiradio 10 base station, and is expected to be replicated at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona later this month.

Bouygues to Commercially Deploy LTE-A In June

French network operator Bouygues Telecom has announced that it will commercially deploy LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) technology in the cities of Bordeaux and Lyon in June 2014. The first data terminals compatible with this technology will be offered by Bouygues Telecom in the second quarter of 2014. According to the company’s press release, in October 2013 Bouygues trialed the technology and achieved downlink of 182Mbps by aggregating frequencies in the 800MHz, 1800MHz and 2600MHz spectrum bands. The company pointed out that the maximum theoretical throughput in LTE-A is dependent on the width of the aggregated frequency bands: the higher the bandwidth, the greater the flow.

Megafon’s 300Mbps LTE-A Hailed as World’s First

Russian cellco MegaFon has launched commercial 300Mbps LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) mobile broadband services in the Garden Ring area of Moscow, which it claims to be the world’s fastest commercial LTE network. MegaFon has rolled out Category 6 (CAT 6) LTE standard technology using Huawei-supplied network infrastructure and subscriber equipment, marketed under the ‘4G+’ banner, and is planning to extend 300Mbps coverage to the Moscow Automobile Ring Road (MKAD) soon. MegaFon’s LTE-A data usage is charged at the same rate as 3G and other 4G traffic.

Taiwan Mobile Aims to Construct Up To 10,000 4G Base Stations By End-2015

Taiwan Mobile Company is aiming to commercialize LTE technology by the end of this year using the 700MHz spectrum it acquired in late 2013. In terms of the network rollout, the cellco plans to deploy between 8,000 and 10,000 base stations covering approximately 90% of the total population in the country’s main urban areas by the end of 2015. Meanwhile, it is understood that the mobile network operator may offer considerable subsidies on 4G smartphones with a view to driving uptake.

DTAC cleared for 4G launch in April

Thai cellco DTAC is expected to launch 4G LTE mobile broadband services on its existing 2100MHz spectrum this April. DTAC plans to launch LTE at 200 sites in Bangkok and another 100 sites in selected major cities in other provinces, to join Thailand’s current sole LTE operator True Corp (via its Real Future unit) which reportedly offers 4G on around 700 LTE-2100MHz sites in Bangkok, and aims to have 1,200 sites in operation by end of March 2014. The Nation adds that the NBTC’s telecom committee on Wednesday also approved DTAC TriNet’s request for 4.4 million additional mobile phone numbers, alongside True Corp’s (Real Future’s) request for 4.6 million extra numbers, following the approval of an allocation of 9.9 million additional numbers to AWN, the 2100MHz licensee unit of mobile market leader AIS.

STC launches LTE-A in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Telecom Company (STC) has launched what it claims is the country’s first Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) network. STC launched its commercial 4G LTE mobile broadband network in September 2011, and by October 2013 coverage had been expanded to 76.1% of the population (around 7,000 sites). Going forward, the firm aims to achieve coverage of 90% of the population by end-2014.

Qualcomm and Ericsson Test 300Mbps Downloads Over 4G Network

Ericsson and Qualcomm say that they have completed inter-vendor interoperability testing of LTE Category 6, based on commercial LTE chipsets and infrastructure supporting carrier aggregation bands at Australia’s Telstra. Final stages of testing were completed in collaboration with Telstra, who’s LTE-A network is being readied for Category 6 commercial launch. LTE Category 6 offer much higher potential data speeds than Category 4, which peaks at 150Mbps.

New spectrum licensing framework taking effect in July

Qatar’s telecoms regulator ICT QATAR has finalized the country’s new radio spectrum licensing framework following a public consultation process held in August 2013, with important elements including terms and conditions for all types of radio spectrum licensing and license templates, and the associated technical schedules for each spectrum type. The framework was developed with the aim of having more flexibility in using licensing tools for regulating spectrum use, for ensuring efficient use of frequencies, to increase transparency and to ensure easy accessibility to necessary information for spectrum users. The framework is intended to be in place by 1 July 2014. To effect this change, the current spectrum licenses will be cancelled and replaced with new licenses in accordance with the new framework.

Claro launches LTE, earmarks investment of USD30m for 2014

Claro Uruguay has announced the commercial launch of 4GLTE services in the capital Montevideo. Chief technology officer Marco Iglesias said that around USD60 million had been invested in the company’s mobile networks last year, with a further USD30 million earmarked for 2014. Alcatel-Lucent supplied Claro’s LTE network, which will be gradually expanded across the capital and to other cities this year. The network, which is an overlay of existing 3G infrastructure, includes Alcatel-Lucent’s end-to-end LTE solution and IP Networking technology, enabling services such as HD video with video on demand (VoD), high speed mobile data, high definition videoconferencing and online gaming.

MTN earmarks investment for expansion, 3G rollout

MTN Cameroon will invest XAF600 billion (USD1.2 billion) over the next three years, with the funds allocated for expansion of its wireless network and the planned launch of mobile internet, cloud and data services. Vietnamese-owned Viettel, which was announced as the winner of the country’s third mobile license in December 2011, has yet to introduce commercial services, although a launch is expected to take place next month. Viettel fought off rival bids from the likes of Maroc Telecom, Indian telecoms group Bharti Airtel and Technologie et Systeme d’information for the licence, after pledging to invest nearly XAF200 billion in the rollout of a 2G and 3G mobile network that will cover 81% of Cameroon’s territory from launch.

Telecom launches commercial TD-LTE network

China Telecom has become the country’s second operator to launch 4G services, having activated its Time Division Long Term Evolution (TD-LTE) network in 100 cities. The 4G service is currently only available via USB modems, although a compatible MiFi router is also available to support other devices. In terms of pricing, Telecom’s offerings range in price from CNY70 (USD11.47) per month with 1GB of data, to CNY280 per month for 10GB. Meanwhile, China Unicom, the nation’s second largest provider by subscribers, is expected to weigh-in next month with the launch of its own TD-LTE network. Both Telecom and Unicom intend to rely heavily on Frequency Division (FD)-LTE for their 4G networks, whilst China Mobile will use the home-grown TD technology exclusively. However, sector regulator the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIT) has not yet signaled when it intends to make FD-LTE licenses available.

Claro joins 4G crowd

Mexican-backed cellco Claro Colombia has launched 4G services in the capital, Bogota, becoming the fourth operator to offer Long Term Evolution (LTE) in the country. The cellco will provide 4G services at the same price as its 3G tariffs, and has 20 LTE-compatible handsets on offer. Existing subscribers with one of the compatible handsets may request a new free SIM to begin using 4G with no change in pricing for their plan. Claro will also enable 3G/4G customers to access its Claro Video video-on-demand (VoD) platform, which currently boasts more than 12,000 titles.

Vodafone UK announces LTE subscriber milestone

Just six months after inaugurating its commercial LTE network, British cellco Vodafone UK has announced that sign-ups for its 4G services have surpassed half a million. With the operator noting that its 4G customers are using on average twice as much data as those connecting via 3G, Vodafone UK also highlighted the fact that such subscribers are also on average doing twice as much music and video streaming, video calling, online shopping and online banking. Indeed, the mobile operator said that in December 2013 alone its 4G customers used a combined 300TB of data.

SK Telecom details plans to enhance LTE and LTE-A infrastructure

SK Telecom (SKT) has outlined plans to construct additional 1800MHz base stations with a view to securing nationwide LTE and LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) coverage. With the operator announcing in a press release that it aims to build the new infrastructure by the end of this year, it has claimed that such network developments will enable customers to access downlink speeds of up to 150Mbps nationwide. In addition, SKT also confirmed that it has gained regulatory approval to use 10MHz in the 2100MHz band for LTE-based services. SKT bagged spectrum in the 2100MHz band in a 2010 auction, and by launching commercial services using such frequencies the cellco has said it will move one step closer to realizing LTE-A tri-band carrier aggregation technology that could support download speeds of up to 300Mbps.

Orange LTE-A trial authorized by Arcep

French telecoms regulator the Autorite de Regulation des Communications Electroniques et des Postes (Arcep) has approved a request from mobile operator Orange to conduct trials of Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) technology. According to a press release, the trial will be carried out in Bordeaux in a very densely populated urban environment, and will allow Orange to test the network’s performance and identify the possible benefits of using the next generation technology. The cellco will use a 2×20MHz channel in the 2.6GHz band, aggregated with an identical channel in the 3.5GHz band for the experiment, and expects that the LTE-A technology will be capable of providing maximum theoretical downlink speeds of 300Mbps.

NBTC releases 4G auction details

Thailand’s National Broadcasting & Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has revealed new details of its plan to auction additional 4G-suitable mobile licenses, announcing a three-stage auction process to be implemented by September 2015. The NBTC said it will redistribute 92.5MHz of spectrum in the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands previously issued to private sector cellcos under build-transfer-operate (BTO) concessions which expire over the next few years. The first planned auction is for 25MHz of 1800MHz spectrum previously used by True Move (part of True Corp) and DPC (part of AIS) in March 2014, followed by a November 2014 auction of 17.5MHz of 900MHz spectrum currently in use by AIS, and finally an auction of 50MHz of 1800MHz spectrum – currently partially being used by DTAC – in September 2015. All licences will be awarded on a technology-neutral basis

Smartphone penetration hits 40%

Smartphone penetration has reached roughly 40% in Costa Rica, with Spanish-backed cellco Movistar claiming that 65% of its users utilized smartphone handsets. The official noted that penetration was well above the norm for the region, which he claimed was only around 10% of users in Central America. Movistar claimed to have passed the one million subscriber milestone in mid-January 2014 and is set to launch its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in Q1 2014.

Bolivia’s Entel to introduce LTEservices in April

Bolivia’s state-owned operator Empresa Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (Entel) is reportedly planning to launch a 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in April 2014. CEO Oscar Coca has suggested that the network could support peak downlink transmission speeds of up to 60Mbps. The executive also revealed that Entel’s average broadband access prices will be reduced by up to 60%.

SingTel Outlines LTE Network Upgrades

Singapore’s SingTel is planning to test LTE A and LTE Broadcast services later this year according to its infrastructure supplier Ericsson. SingTel is working with Ericsson to upgrade its Singapore 4G network to LTE-Advanced later this year. This will enable SingTel to boost the maximum data speeds of its 4G service to 300Mbps. Based on Ericsson’s Evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS) solution, LTE Broadcast will enable a virtually unlimited number of mobile users in densely populated areas to stream broadcast videos simultaneously to their mobile devices. The solution makes the most efficient use of mobile frequency spectrum and network resources.

Thailand to Hold Three Spectrum Auctions Later This Year

Thailand’s telecoms regulator is planning to hold three separate auctions later this year for radio spectrum expected to be released for use by 4G services. The auctions which had been expected for September will now be staged across both August and September. The auction for 25 Mhz of 1800Mhz spectrum being vacated by True Move and Digital Phone will take place earlier than expected, in August. The licenses expired last September, but were given a conditional one year extension.

Russia’s MTS Offered to Buy Out Government Stake in Belarus Subsidiary

Russia’s MTS made an offer to buy the 51% stake in its Belarus subsidiary that is up for sale but offered a price far lower than the government is asking for. The government, which owns the 51% stake has repeatedly tried and failed to sell the stake, with the fairly being blamed mainly on the very high price being asked for. The government recently lowered the asking price to US$863 million, but that is still seen as excessive for the stake. MTS’s Russian parent reportedly offered up to US$500 million for the stake, which is about what most commentators believe it to be worth. The offer was reportedly turned down as too low.

Zain Moving Closer to Bahrain Stock Market Listing

The stock market listing of Zain’s Bahrain subsidiary has moved closer following the publication of a formal notice in the government gazette. The company is required to list its shares on the local stock exchange as a condition of its operating license, but missed the deadline to do so by the end of last year. Zain Bahrain is 56.3% owned by Kuwait’s Zain and is required to list at least 15 percent of its shares for the public. The gazette notice gives the other investors in the company 60 days to object to the share listing, although as it is a license condition, objections are not expected.

Verizon and Vodafone Complete Their $130 Billion Deal

Verizon and Vodafone have completed their US$130 billion transaction and Verizon now owns its entire mobile network subsidiary. Vodafone shareholders are due to receive roughly 72 pence in Verizon shares and 30 pence in cash for each Vodafone share they own. Vodafone is returning a total of $23.9 billion in cash to its shareholders in addition their shares, taking the total to US$82.5 billion. Vodafone is keeping the rest for investments, and also bought Verizon’s indirect stake in Vodafone Italy, giving it full ownership.

China Telecom Customer Base Shrinks As 4G Lures Customers to Rival Network

China Telecom has posted its first decline in mobile subscribers since 2008 as customers migrate to China Mobile’s 4G service. According to statistics from the big three mobile networks, the country saw its mobile phone user base grow by just under 7 million in January, taking their combined total to 881.9 million. Of that, just under 206 million were using China Mobile’s home-grown 3G network. The company added 14.24 million new 3G customers, although its GSM base shrank by 9.6 million at the same time. China Mobile picked up two thirds of all new subscribers during the month. China Unicom saw its net customer base grow by 3.12 million to 284.11 million.

Ooredoo Gearing Up For Q3 Launch

Qatari-backed cellco Ooredoo Myanmar is planning to launch commercial 3G services in Q3 2014, according to the carrier’s CEO Nasser Marifih. Ooredoo has opted to leapfrog 2G and progress straight to 3G, with a focus on data and broadband services. The telco is currently rolling out its network and plans to ink an infrastructure sharing deal with fellow newcomer Telenor Myanmar.

Samsung Shows off Back to Basics Galaxy S5 Smartphone

Samsung says that it is going back to basics in its newest flagship smartphone the Galaxy S5 even as it increased the technical performance of the device. The built-in camera is said to have the world’s fastest autofocus speed up to 0.3 seconds, and comes with a 16 megapixel sensor. The Galaxy S5 supports the fifth generation Wi-Fi 802.11ac and 2X2 MIMO, and supporting the large number of LTE frequency with LTE Category 4 standard. The Galaxy S5 is IP67 dust and water resistant. It also offers a Finger Scanner, providing a biometric screen locking feature.

Ericsson, NSN and Huawei Sign OSS Interoperability Agreement

Ericsson, NSN and Huawei have signed technology license agreements for multi-vendor interoperability covering Â Operations Support Systems OSS. In signing these license agreements, the companies aim to expand on the goals of the Operations Support Systems interoperability initiative (OSSii). The licenses will be available to other OSS vendors on what the company’s called reasonable terms and conditions. As part of the initiative Ericsson will provide a remote service for interoperability testing.

NSN and South Korean Operators Achieve TDD-FDD Carrier Aggregation

NSN has announced its successful demonstration of the world’s first TDD FDD carrier aggregation together with Korean operators Korea Telecom KT and SK Telecom SKT. By aggregating spectrum resources on multiple frequency bands of TD-LTE and FDD LTE, NSN helps operators increase throughput by 50-100%, depending on the level of availability of TDD or FDD spectrum.

Ericsson and Qualcomm Double the 3G Upload Speed

Ericsson and Qualcomm have successfully demonstrated Dual Carrier High Speed Uplink Packet Access DC HSUPA for the first time on a commercial smartphone. The demo marks an important milestone in the continued evolution of 3G mobile communications technology, as DC-HSUPA can double the current maximum 3G uplink data rate. Although most data consumption is asynchronous with more downloads than uploads, and most effort has gone into improving the download speed.

Huawei and Vodafone Testing FDD and TDD Convergence LTE Carrier Aggregation

Huawei is showing off a LTE-A FDD TDD Convergence Carrier Aggregation CA solution that it says will go into trials with Vodafone Spain during MWC. Vodafone currently has 800MHz, 1800MHz, and 2600MHz, a total of 50MHz spectrum bandwidth in FDD mode and 20MHz of 2600MHz in TDD mode in Spain. That could offer a theoretical peak download speed of 500Mbps, although the commercially launched peak rate is expected to be much lower, if only due to the lack of handsets that could support it.

Ericsson Launches Evolved IP Network Solution

Ericsson said that its Evolved IP Network will lead to mobile networks that are easier to manage and allow for faster configuration of user services. Ericsson IP Network provides end-to-end transport from radio base stations, small cells and fixed access, to packet gateway connections to the Internet and other external networks. Effective synchronization was made possible using the IEEE 1588 timing protocol and the SP 210 router at cell sites.

ZTE Takes Over Managed Services for Germany’s E-Plus

China’s ZTE has taken over the responsibility for the roll out and the network operation of Germany’s E Plus as part of a managed services contract signed last year. ZTE said that it completed the transition of the network operations in early January 2014. After months of preparation, ZTE implemented the take-over of E-Plus network operations during just a single night in early January 2014. During that night, ZTE migrated the whole IT infrastructure from the previous service provider, with their support, to a ZTE data centre. Since then, ZTE has deployed some new software tools including its ZSmart.

NSN Completes Live VoLTE Tests in China Mobile’s TD-LTE Network

Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) said that it has successfully completed the world’s first live video call and an extensive set of test cases for Voice over LTE (VoLTE) in China Mobile’s pre-commercial TD-LTE network in Fuzhou. To verify the functionality and performance of VoLTE in its TD-LTE network, China Mobile set up parallel VoLTE trial projects with several mobile broadband equipment vendor in different parts of the country. The solution will be commercially available in March across both TDD and FDD variants of LTE.

Ericsson Implements Five-State LTE Expansion for US Cellular

Ericsson has completed a 4G LTE network expansion for US Cellular and its partner, King Street Wireless. The expansion was part of US Cellular’s third phase of LTE network rollouts and covers cities in five states including Madison, Wisconsin; Portland, Maine; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and markets in New Hampshire and North Carolina. As part of the latest expansion, the Swedish technology giant provided the 4G access network including eNodeB LTE base stations based on the Ericsson RBS 6000 multi-standard, and expanded network capacity.

NSN Extends Saudi Managed Services Contract

Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) and Saudi Telecom Company (STC) has renewed its managed services contract with the company. Through the renewed contract, NSN continues to provide its comprehensive managed services including network planning and optimization, network and service operations as well as care services including hardware and software services for STC’s Al Jawal Network. The contract covers GSM, 3G and LTE network of STC within NSN’s footprint. Last November, Huawei was awarded a managed services contract lasting 4 years, for an unspecified amount of the network.

Ericsson and NSN Win 5-Year Supply Contracts from Vodafone

Vodafone has awarded Ericsson a 5 year agreement as part of its Project Spring investment programme initial phase. This network transformation contract includes both products and services to enhance Vodafone networks.

Huawei selected for Nextel rollout

Chinese vendor Huawei has been selected by Chile’s Entel Group to roll out a nationwide GSM/UMTS/Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband network for the telco’s Peruvian subsidiary Nextel. The network will cover nearly all of Peru and will make use of Huawei’s Active Antenna Unit (AAU) solution for integrated radio units and multi-band antenna products. According to Huawei, the AAU solution ‘facilitates rapid site deployments, and provides site space savings of up to 75% on rooftops, towers and poles.’

Ericsson Wins Thai Network Expansion Contract

Thailand based mobile network operator Real Future has signed a contract with Ericsson to expand its network. Ericsson is deploying radio base stations, along with a range of services including project management, system integration, interoperability testing, network design and implementation, as well as competence development of personnel. Real Future is a subsidiary of True Corp under the True Mobile Group and has 22.4 million subscribers.
