Dear Readers,
Warid Telecom, an Abu Dhabi Group owned company and Telenor Telenor celebrates its 10th anniversary in Pakistan. Telenor is serving the people of Pakistan with their great efforts and revolution, whereas Warid is recognized as Pakistan’s most trusted cellular service provider, it has grown to become the largest and fastest growing 4GLTE network of the country. Mobilink has expanded its 3G network to 43 cities of Pakistan by adding seven new cities to the existing 36 that already were experiencing the telco’s superior internet connectivity. Zong plans to have 3,000 4G and 5,500 3G cell sites by the end of the year. PTCL organized a session on “Disruptive Innovation” by Mr. Mark Zawacki in pursuance of its objective of looking beyond its own progressiveness and towards the greater good of the telecom sector. Huawei P8 is all set to hit Pakistani mobile market.

Azerbaijan mobile operator Bakcell has received additional spectrum in the 700 MHz band to provide LTE services. Sky Mobile, working under the Beeline Kyrgyzstan brand, has introduced a promotion for veterans of WWII. Uzbekistan national operator Uztelecom announced that it plans to build 92 base stations powered by solar energy this year. Mobile operator Takom, working under the Beeline Tajikistan brand, has modified its Sim-Credit service, allowing prepaid customers to take TJS 1.5 or TJS 10 credit for services. Some 49% of the shares of Kazakhstan’s largest communications operator, Transtelecom, were sold as part of a privatization program in the country. MTS Tukrmenistan revenues grew 9.4 percent year-on-year to TMT 72 million in the first quarter of the year and Armentel, working under the Beeline Armenia brand, has modified the conditions for credit for its services.

Daimler (owner of Mercedes-Benz) and Qualcomm have announced a new partnership to work towards in-car wireless charging. The companies are also going to develop ideas for charging electric cars without cables. This will provide Qualcomm with an opportunity to increase its services other than just making smartphone chipsets.

Etisalat offers discounts to customers with special needs

Etisalat has announced a 50% discount on mobile internet packages and video calls for customers with special needs. They will be able to make video calls to Etisalat customers for AED 0.30 per minute. Etisalat is offering post-paid customers with special needs options ranging from a 1 GB to package to unlimited mobile data package costing from AED 49.50 to AED 499.50 respectively.

DOCOMO to invest USD5.3bn inLTE in fiscal 2015

Japan’s largest mobile operator by subscribers NTT DOCOMO is setting aside around JPY636 billion (USD5.3 billion) in its financial year ending 31 March 2016 (FY2015) to enhance service coverage and access speed on its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, and to improve operating efficiency.

Russia LTE mobile device sales up by 7% in Q1

Sales of LTE smartphones and tablets in Russia grew by 7% to 980,000 units in January-March of this year, according to figures from the mobile retail chain Svyaznoy. Revenue jumped by 19% to RUB 25 billion. LTE devices accounted for 45% of the total mobile market. In total, 865,000 LTE smartphones were sold, up by 28%, and smartphone revenue soared by 40% to RUB 21.5 billion.

China’s 4G mobile phone production jumps over 470% in April

China’s production of 4G mobile phones increased by nearly 472 percent year-on-year reaching 37.8 million units in April 2015. Overall, 45.2 million mobile phones were produced in April in China, which represents a growth of 11 percent compared to April 2014.

Mobile shopping accounts for half of China’s online sales

Nearly half of China’s total online shopping GMV (gross merchandise volume) was generated by shoppers using mobile devices in the first quarter. Consumers continued to rapidly shift their e-shopping activities from PCs to smartphones, according to a report from iResearch, cited by Alizila.

Ooredoo introduces electronic data top-ups

Ooredoo announced its Mobile Data Scratch Cards will now be available in E-Voucher format. Currently mobile data is only available via weekly or monthly subscriptions and top-up scratch cards. The top-ups come in denominations of 250MB for QAR 20, 1GB for QAR 60, 3GB for QAR 80, 6GB for QAR 100 and 15GB for QAR 200 and are valid for 30 days once activated.

Batelco network upgrades continue

The Bahrain Telecommunications Company (Batelco) is currently upgrading 3G and 4G services across the country, in addition to continuing expansion of its ‘superfast broadband’ fibre network. Boku launches carrier billing on Google Play, with Zain KSA

Payment platform Boku has launched its carrier billing system in the Google Play store. South Africa’s newest mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) me&you mobile has launched commercial services through its website, TechCentral reports. Piggybacking on Cell C’s infrastructure, me&you mobile offers SIM-only services to clients with voice and data rates staring at ZAR 0.39 (USD0.03) per minute and ZAR0.15 per MB, respectively.

Uztelecom to build solar energy-powered base stations

Uzbekistan national operator Uztelecom announced that it plans to build 92 base stations powered by solar energy this year. The operatror installed solar power generators in numerous base stations and radio relay stations in remote areas in 2012-2014. Wind power generators are also planned to be installed at some assets in June.

Kcell to install billing system from Amdocs

Kazakhstan mobile operator Kcell, controlled by the TeliaSonera group, has signed an agreement with Amdocs Software Solutions, reports Profit.kz. Amdocs will design and install a covergent billing system for the mobile operator and will then maintain it. The duration of the contract is five years and the size of the deal is USD 44 million. Amdocs will replace the current BSS-system at Kcell.

Bahrain’s Menatelecom has introduced a new Mena Home 4G package for a high-speeds internet service at BHD 5 for 10 GB. The new package offers ‘half day on you and half day on us’ with free data downloads from midnight to noon. It also includes free unlimited on net, free bundled minutes to all local networks (fixed and mobile) and the highest throttle down speeds on all packages in Bahrain.

ITU launches 5G ‘IMT-2020’ focus group

Mobile operator Takom, working under the Beeline Tajikistan brand, has modified its Sim-Credit service, allowing prepaid customers to take TJS 1.5 or TJS 10 credit for services. Previously only amounts of TJS 2.50 and TJS 5 were available under the service. The service costs TJS 0.31 for TJS 1.50 credit, TJS 0.51 for TJS 2.50 credit, TJS 1.02 for TJS 5 credit and TJS 2.04 for TJS 10 credit.

Altel changes Super Smart tariff

Hutch Macau investing USD37.5m in 4G rollout

Hutchison Telephone Macau (3 Macau) is planning to invest around MOP300 million (USD37.5 million) in rolling out its 4G LTE network, aiming to cover half of Macanese territory by the end of this year, Macau Business Daily reports. 3 will officially get its 4G license from the Macau government next month, while LTE-based services will be launched during the fourth quarter.

Mobitel offers unlimited internet over Opera mini

Mobile operator Mobitel has introduced the unlimited internet option for customers using the Opera mini browser. The weekly subscription to the service costs GEL 2, and the monthly subscription amounts to GEL 5. The service is accessible on both the GSM and LTE networks, but not using Wap portals. The tariff is applied when using Opera Turbo and Opera browsers.

Teletalk’s customer base quadruples since end-2012

Bangladesh state-owned mobile operator Teletalk has quadrupled its customer base since the introduction of its 3G services two and a half years ago, bdnews24 reports, citing Teletalk managing director Gias Uddin Ahmed. The number of Teletalk subscribers went up to 5.4 million in April 2015, from 1.4 million in October 2012.

Uztelecom opens new Uzmobile call centre

O2 Czech Republic operating revenues rise 3.7 percent in Q1

O2 Czech Republic said operating revenues in the first quarter increased by 3.7 percent year on year to CZK 11.16 billion. The fixed segment in the Czech Republic contributed CZK 4.916 billion to this (+3.2 percent), the mobile segment in the Czech Republic accounted for CZK 4.732 billion (up 0.4%), and Slovakia contributed CZK 1.608 billion (up 17.9%).

Vodafone boasts widest LTE-A coverage at launch

Vodafone Qatar yesterday launched its commercial LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network under the ‘4G+’ banner, less than a year after its 4G LTE launch in June 2014. In a statement the UK-Qatari company said that ‘70% of our 4G network sites in Qatar are now 4G+ capable giving us the widest 4G+ coverage in Qatar with speeds of up to 150Mbps and an average 30Mbps.’

Two million SIMs remain unregistered in Kyrgyzstan

According to the National Communications Agency (NCA), as at 1 May 2015 Kyrgyzstan’s three largest operators by subscriber, Megacom, Sky Mobile (operating under the Beeline banner) and Nur Telecom (‘O!’), had registered 67.66%, 80.25% (2.2 million) and 79.49% (1.5 million) of their respective SIM cards.

Altron to sell Altech’s GSM subscriber base

Takom revenues down 15% in Q1

Revenues of the mobile operator Takom decreased by 15% year-on-year in the first quarter of this year to USD 26 million as a result of lower incoming international traffic due to fewer migrants abroad. The subscriber base declined by 2% year-on-years to 1.3 million, while ARPU decreased by 14 percent to USD 6.8. The EBITDA margin stood at 52.8% as a result of cost efficiency.

Du deploys 4G+ technology in UAE

UAE operator Du has begun deployments supporting LTE Advanced (LTE-A), also known as 4G+. The company is using Cat 6 technology with carrier aggregation across its network. 4G+ is currently available in several areas with high footfall, and Du aims on furthering the network coverage in line with the increase in demand and the rapid development in mobile devices technology.

Megacom expands 3G coverage

Megacom, Kyrgyzstan’s largest cellco by subscribers announced that it has extended 3G coverage to settlements of Arpa, Tektir, Jetim-Debe, Kalmatay and Nasirdin in Osh Oblast. Additionally, new base transceiver stations (BTS) have also been installed in the Chuy, Talas, Osh, Issyk Kul, Jalal-Abad and Batken provinces in order to increase network capacity.

Telecom Egypt’s turnover up 7.7% in 1Q15

MPT adds 8 mln new customers in 7 months

Myanmar Post and Telecommunications (MPT) have sold over 8 million SIMs in the seven months since signing the joint operations agreement with Japanese operator KDDI and Sumitomo. KDDI says that launching operations in Myanmar had boosted revenues for its global services segment, with the segment’s operating revenues reaching JPY 320.6 billion.

Kazakhstan’s Major Telecom Operator to be privatized

Some 49% of the shares of Kazakhstan’s largest communications operator, Transtelecom, were sold as part of a privatization program in the country.
The deal’s cost exceeded 8.94 billion tenges (185.8 tenges = $1). The company created in 1998, is located in the city of Astana, and employs 2,662 people.

ITU considers additional spectrum for Wi-Fi – report

Chinese operators to slash mobile data prices by up to 35%

China’s three state-owned mobile operators said they will cut mobile data prices and increase data speeds this year. The measure is expected to generate a mass migration of customers to 4G contracts, Reuters reports. China Mobile said it would reduce mobile data rates by 35 percent or more by year-end.

Zong unveils 3G/4G rollout plans

MTS Turkmenistan revenues lift 9% in Q1

Mobile operator MTS Tukrmenistan said revenues grew 9.4 percent year-on-year to TMT 72 million in the first quarter of the year. OIBDA increased by 1.2 percent to TMT 26 million. The OIBDA margin decreased by 3 percentage points to 36 percent and the net profit was stable at TMT 12 million. ARPU totaled TMT 13.7, up from 12.8 year-on-year. Capex amounted to RUB 1.084 billion.

Kazakhstan mobile operator Altel, plans to modify the rates of international calls from 11 June. Calls to Greece, Korea, the US and Israel will cost KZT 10 per minute, calls rates to Germany, Russia and Uzbekistan will total KZT 15 per minute, and call rates to the UK and Pakistan will be offered for KZT 30 per minute.
