Ericsson Confident in China Mobile’s $6.7 Billion 4G Tender

Ericsson is confident that it will take a sizable chunk of China Mobile’s forthcoming 4G network infrastructure tender. China Mobile recently announced plans to invest around RMB42 billion (US$6.7 billion) this year deploying an additional 200,000 4G base stations as it prepares for an August launch of its TD-LTE based service. “Ericsson is confident that it will gain a much bigger share during China Mobile’s new round of bidding,” Eric Feng, executive vice-president ofEricsson North East Asia, said at a news briefing in Guangzhou. He expects China Mobile’s 4G projects to significantly boost Ericsson’s performance in China, but declined to provide specific figures. However, the mobile network is looking at upgrading a large percentage of its existing 3G network to support 4G services, and those base stations have been primarily supplied by Huawei and ZTE.

Nokia Siemens Networks Eliminates Unnecessary Signaling from Older Smartphones

Nokia Siemens Networks has developed a profiling platform for networks that identifies older smartphones and eliminates the unnecessary signaling they often create. This significantly reduces the air interface load on the Radio Network Controller (RNC). With smartphones now outselling feature phones and dominating mobile traffic, the amount of signaling is growing at the same time, in particular because of ‘always-on’ background applications. With Fast Cell PCH Switching, also a Nokia Siemens Networks technology, the network learns how specific smartphones are using the network services and shortcuts the signaling process for rapid call set-up, faster response from mobile broadband services and reduced signaling.

Huawei and China Mobile Complete World’s First Flash CSFB to GSM Field Test on a Live LTE TDD Network

Huawei, a leading global ICT solutions provider, and China Mobile (CMCC) recently successfully completed the world’s first Flash CSFB to GSM field test on a live LTE TDD network. The successful completion indicates the commercial readiness of Huawei’s Flash CSFB solution. Compared with traditional CSFB, Huawei’s Flash CSFB solution requires less time to complete end-to-end call setups to ensure a better user experience, and is capable of handovers to GSM and UMTS. Huawei’s Flash CSFB to GSM solution will help China Mobile maximize its returns from GSM investments, reduce voice service investments during the initial LTE network deployment phase, and lay a solid foundation for a smooth evolution towards voice over LTE (VoLTE).

ZTE Overtakes Alcatel-Lucent in Global Optical Networking Market

Ovum’s analysis of 1Q13 results in the $14.5bn global optical networking (ON) market has highlighted several key shifts. First, ZTE overtook Alcatel-Lucent to grab the number two spot. Second, growth in 100G remains a bright spot as annualized revenues exceeded $1bn for the first time ever. Third, market growth overall remains difficult, challenging equipment vendors; only Fujitsu posted sequential and year-over-year gains. The global industry analysts believe the current downturn is being driven by a quickening in the shift in spending to non-IP/Ethernet aggregation equipment, faltering economic growth in Europe, and lower pricing due to intense vendor competition.

Motorola Plans a Comeback with ‘Moto X’

Motorola Mobility CEO, Dennis Woodside confirmed speculations that the once-dominant cellphone maker intends to make a comeback in the hotly competitive mobile market. The new phone, called the Moto X, will be built at a 500,000 square-feet facility in Texas that will employ 2,000 people by August. Woodside said the Moto X would benefit from Motorola’s expertise in managing ultra-low power sensors – such as in accelerometers and gyroscopes – that can sense usage contexts and power down certain components when not required, thereby conserving power. Motorola’s engineers have also come up with processors that will help save power.
