Dear Readers,

VimpelCom, the parent company of mobile providers Mobilink and Warid, has announced plans to invest USD1 billion in Pakistan over the next five years, including USD300 million over the next year alone. ProPakistani quotes CEO Jean-Yves Charlier as saying: ‘We are going to make major investments in network, IT systems, infrastructure and in new services for customers during the next five years with an ambition to build the best network with the widest coverage and the most advanced 3G and 4G LTE services in the country. Pakistani minister of information technology Anusha Rahman has formally granted the 850MHz licence to Telenor Pakistan, Daily Times reports. The licence will enable Telenor Pakistan to launch 4G service on the local market.

Currently, over 16,500 base stations are operating in Uzbekistan, Ministry of Development of Information Technologies and Communications of Uzbekistan. Kyrgyzstan mobile operator Megacom has re-freshed the mobile version of its corporate online site. Customers can now activate and disconnect services with a single click. They can top-up a handset balance, and control expenses and traffic over their mobile devices. With the upgrade, the site’s navigation panel and search options have been optimised. The site itself has also been fully adapted to the parametres of mobile devices. Armenian mobile operator Ucom has chosen Astellia’s LTE network monitoring system. Astellia is expected to help Ucom solve technical issues the company might face when deploying LTE services, ensuring smooth network expansion and return on investments. Kyrgyzstan mobile operator Nur Telecom, working under the O! brand, deployed new LTE base stations in cities of Bishkek and Kant in June. A 3G base station has been deployed in the settlement of Baktuu-Dolonotu in the Issyk-Kul region.Kazakhstan mobile operator Kcell, controlled by the Telia Company group, announced that its net sales dropped by 15.3 percent year-on-year to KZT 36.413 billion in the second quarter of this year. In the first half, net sales dropped by 16.5 percent to KZT 71.883 billion. Azerbaijan mobile operator Bakcell has included Russia into the list of states covered by the ‘1 MB = AZN 0.01’ mobile internet roaming promotion. Subscribers can use mobile internet services for AZN 0.01 per MB when roaming on the network of Russian mobile operator Megafon.

US mobile chip giant Qualcomm has announced quarterly numbers that were at the upper end of its guidance thanks to strong revenues from China in both chips and licensing. Qualcomm was investigated and fined by Chinese antitrust authorities in early 2015, but one consequence of the settlement was that it was given greater power to pursue licensing fees from Chinese companies. Qualcomm recently took action against Chinese smartphone maker Meizu for alleged patent infringements and it looks like plenty of others are already paying up.

Qualcomm thanks China for strong Q2, eyes 2018 for 5G

US mobile chip giant Qualcomm has announced quarterly numbers that were at the upper end of its guidance thanks to strong revenues from China in both chips and licensing. Qualcomm was investigated and fined by Chinese antitrust authorities in early 2015, but one consequence of the settlement was that it was given greater power to pursue licensing fees from Chinese companies. Qualcomm recently took action against Chinese smartphone maker Meizu for alleged patent infringements and it looks like plenty of others are already paying up.
