Dear Readers,
The increasing population of Pakistan clearly indicates that the country has great potential for smartphone penetration. Also the 3G/4G services has accessed to the far flung regions like Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) recently. Smartphone shipment in Pakistan has massively increased by 214% on yearly basis during the first 3 months of 2015 compared to 2014. Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) wrote a letter to Afghan government over the issue of illegal Afghan SIMs in Pakistan. According to the reports, PTA will sign agreement with Government of Afghanistan and after the agreement all the Afghan SIMs will be banned in Pakistan.

Mobile operator Beeline Uzbekistan has expanded the coverage and raised the capacity of its 3G network in the Bukhara region. Additional 3G base stations were built in the province for better communication and 3G services. Tajikistan mobile operator Tcell has introduced its new ‘Stop Content’ service to subscribers. The service will enable customers to block SMSs sent to premium numbers from other users. Mobile operator MTS Turkmenistan has upgraded its USSD-menu-based services management system. The service will enable users to receive information about promotional tariffs, new packages and all the other information. A communication pillar of Afghan Telecom was destroyed by Armed Individuals in Dykundi province. Mohammad Ebrahim Naseri, head of Information and Technology of Dykundi, told BNA that the pillar of Afghan Telecom was destroyed by unknown gunmen in the Zard-Gloy area of Kejran district. Azerbaijan mobile operator Bakcell doesn’t plan significant jobs cuts due to the difficult economic situation in the country caused by the depreciating local currency. Nevertheless, the operator has started revising its earlier adopted strategy for 2016. Kazakhstan mobile operator Altel has introduced its new info-service enabling customers to obtain instant information about the contact’s operator. Operator Karabakh Telecom, working in Mountainous Karabakh republic, has launched a new daily mobile internet tariff. The service is aimed at prepaid subscribers. A daily traffic bundle of 1 GB costs AMD 295 per day, and is valid for a single day.

Qualcomm unleashed a bunch of news at CES, the big consumer tech show in Las Vegas on Tuesday. But the most significant bit was related to the future of cellular networks for the Internet of things and two new Wi-Fi technologies that consumers might benefit from.

Kazakhstan fans could choose their country’s next national team coach in an online vote as part of a rare democratic experiment in international soccer. Fans have been offered a choice between a Kazakh or foreign coach on the federation’s website. In the second round, fans will pick a name from a list of coaches.

Megacom opens new shop for corporate users

Mobile operator CDMA Uzbekistan, working under the Perfectum Mobile brand, has refreshed its promotion aimed at loyal subscribers. Subscribers who earlier activated premium numbers at a discount rate under the loyalty programm will be able to activate premium numbers at a discount rate. A discount of 40 percent will be offered when purchasing a number costing USD 25, for subscribers using services for at least six months.

Sky Mobile upgrades translation app

Mobile operator Sky Mobile, working under the Beeline Kyrgyzstan brand, has upgraded its El-Sozduk translation mobile app. The app dictionary has been expanded to 330,000 words. The app enables users to translate from/to Kyrgyz, Turkish, English and Russian languages. The application was designed based on the El-Sozduk online dictionary with over 1.2 million users. The application is free and available for download on Google Play and App Store.

BakuBus drops Wi-Fi tender

Telefonica eyes AT&T’s $10bn Latin American TV assets

Spanish telecommunications company Telefonica SA has expressed interest in buying AT&T Inc’s pay TV assets in Latin America, which could be valued at around $10 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.
