A consultative meeting was held between Federal Minister for Kashmir affairs and Gilgit Baltistan Chaudhry Barjees Tahir and Minister of state for IT and telecom Anusha Rehman to discuss various aspects of policy directive for provision of Next Generation Mobile services to AJK & GB. Telenor Pakistan posted an operating profit of NOK 584 million in the fourth quarter of 2015, up from NOK 260 a year earlier. Telenor reported fourth-quarter revenues of NOK 33.5 billion and organic revenue growth of 2%. Armenian mobile operator VivaCell, a subsidiary of Russian mobile operator MTS, invested AMD 191.4 billion in Armenia in 2005-2015, reports Arka.am. Capex for the company totaled AMD 10.3 billion in 2015. Mobile operator Kar-Tel, working under the Beeline Kazakhstan brand, has started providing telecommunication services for the Turkuaz group. The construction and production company has switched 500 of its numbers to the Beeline Kazakhstan network over number porting. Uzbektelecom registered an emission of shares for total sum of over 16.243 billion soums. The Center for coordination and development of securities market registered the prospectus of emission of the company. Within the emission, national telecom operator of Uzbekistan will issue 14, 057,99 ordinary shares with par value of 1,154 soums each. Etisalat has announced it has reached 5 million customers in Afghanistan. Etisalat started its operation in Afghanistan in 2007, and its voice and data services currently cover 34 provinces across the country. Kyrgyzstan mobile operator Nur Telecom, working under the O! Brand, has introduced a promotion of the 4G Wi-Fi Wingle router. The device is on offer for KGS 1 to subscribers. The offer is valid for those connecting to the ‘Unlim 4G’ service for two months. Azerbaijan mobile operator Bakcell has introduced a new co-branded bank card in cooperation with Unibank. The Alubakart bank card is a prepaid debit bank card. The card must be attached to a Bakcell telephone number in order to access the operator’s loyalty program. Services revenues of the mobile operator Takom dropped by 17 percent year-on-year to USD 28 million in the fourth quarter of 2015. EBITDA jumped by 28 percent over the same period to USD 17 million. Kyrgyzstan mobile operator Megacom has re-fleshed its self-service mobile application Mega Assistant for iOS-based smartphones. Subscribers are able to activate services and options and receive information on services from the operator using the application. The application has been re-designed and now includes access to the Mega Bonus loyalty program.

Qualcomm, the world’s biggest mobile chipmaker, has announced a range of products at the company’s analyst meeting today, including a new Snapdragon Wear platform for wearable, the first commercial gigabit LTE modem for mobile devices, and several new low to mid-range mobile chips. First up is the Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor, a dedicated chip designed to power the next generation of wearable. It will replace the Snapdragon 400 SoC that is found in the majority of today’s Android Wear watches. It’s 30 percent smaller and 25 percent more power efficient than the 400, and includes a new LTE modem, Wi-Fi and low-power Bluetooth. Next up is Qualcomm’s gigabit-class LTE modem for mobile devices: the X16. The company says that the X16, which is made using the 14-nm processor, will enable live streaming of 360-degree virtual reality content.

VivaCell invested AMD 191 billion in 2005-2015

Armenian mobile operator VivaCell, a subsidiary of Russian mobile operator MTS, invested AMD 191.4 billion in Armenia in 2005-2015, reports Arka.am. Capex for the company totaled AMD 10.3 billion in 2015. The lion’s share of the money was allocated to the development of the operator’s mobile network: expanding network coverage and raising capacity.

Kar-Tel wins contract at Turkuaz

Mobile operator Kar-Tel, working under the Beeline Kazakhstan brand, has started providing telecommunication services for the Turkuaz group. The construction and production company has switched 500 of its numbers to the Beeline Kazakhstan network over number porting. A total 2,460 numbers have switched to the Beeline Kazakhstan network over the MNP service since its launch on 1 January.

Etisalat Afghanistan hits 5 mln subscribers

Etisalat has announced it has reached 5 million customers in Afghanistan. Etisalat started its operation in Afghanistan in 2007, and its voice and data services currently cover 34 provinces across the country. Etisalat also reports it has invested over USD 400 million to develop its operations in Afghanistan over the past eight years.

Nur Telecom launches LTE Wi-Fi router promo

Kyrgyzstan mobile operator Nur Telecom, working under the O! brand, has introduced a promotion of the 4G Wi-Fi Wingle router. The device is on offer for KGS 1 to subscribers. The offer is valid for those connecting to the ‘Unlim 4G’ service for two months. The activation rate of the service totals KGS 2,780. The promotion is valid in the city of Bishkek, in the Chuy, Talas, Issyk-Kul and Naryn regions, as well as in the towns of Kara-Kul and Toktogul.

Mobile operator Tele2 Kazakhstan has introduced to its subscribers a promotion of the Zvooq music service. Access to the premium version of the service is offered free for a week. Azerbaijan mobile operator Bakcell has introduced a new co-branded bank card in cooperation with Unibank, reports Trend. The Alubakart bank card is a prepaid debit bank card. The card must be attached to a Bakcell telephone number in order to access the operator’s loyalty programme. Subscribers will be offered a voice bundle including 5 minutes of on-net calls for each AZN 10 sum spent using the card.

Takom revenues fall 17%, EBITDA higher in Q4

Services revenues of the mobile operator Takom dropped by 17 percent year-on-year to USD 28 million in the fourth quarter of 2015. EBITDA jumped by 28 percent over the same period to USD 17 million. The operator said that the environment in Tajikistan remains challenging, with increasing competition and currency rates fluctuation. Mobile service revenue decreased mainly due to lower incoming international traffic as a result of fewer migrants living abroad due to the economic slowdown in the region and a weakening local currency. Mobile internet revenue decreased in the quarter due to bans on popular websites and social networks and the weak currency.

Sky Mobile offers new roaming pack on Beeline networks

Mobile operator Sky Mobile, working under the Beeline Kyrgyzstan brand, has introduced to its prepaid subscribers a new roaming package for use on Beeline networks in Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia. The package including 10 minutes of calls costs KGS 100. Subsequent minutes within the same day also cost KGS 10. The standard rate for incoming calls is KGS 64 per minute, and calls to Kyrgyzstan cost KGS 129 per minute.

Takom launches location service

Mobile operator Takom, working under the Beeline Tajikistan brand, has introduced its new ‘Where Are You?’ location service. The service enables customers to obtain information about a subscriber’s location instantly, even from basic handsets. The service can be used across the country and is free for three days after activation. A TJS 0.35 daily subscription then applies, for up to 10 daily inquiries.

Armentel enables purchases over services management app

Mobile operator Armentel, working under the Beeline Armenia brand, said subscribers can now book purchases online over the My Beeline Armenia services management mobile application. Armenian mobile operator VivaCell, a subsidiary of Russian operator MTS, has upgraded its ‘Special’ tariff. The mobile internet traffic bundle has been raised from 500 MB to 2 GB. The monthly subscription rate will total AMD 2,500 when connectring to the tariff by 1 March. The offer also includes 1,500 minutes of monthly on-net calls and 150 SMS to Armenian mobile networks.

Takom launches online portal for the children

Mobile operator Takom, working under the Beeline Tajikistan brand, has launched its new Beeline Kids entertainment online portal. The operator claims that it is the first such portal in Tajikistan. Africell selects Alepo for data charging platform

Alepo has announced a new, multinational contract with the mobile operator group Africell for the deployment of Alepo’s convergent data charging and policy control system as part of Africell’s planned LTE networks in Africa. Under the agreement, Africell will employ Alepo’s Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) solution, pre-integrated with deep packet inspection, for 3G and 4G LTE services in Sierra Leone, Uganda, the Gambia, and the DRC.

Beeline expands its network in Khorezm region

Largest communication operator of Uzbekistan Beeline expanded its coverage and capacity of 3G network in the territory of the Western Regional branch of Unitel. As a result of expansion of the network, signal quality has been improved in the Khorezm region.
The operator said that over 10 3G base stations were launched in Khorezm region. This allowed a greater number of people in the region to take advantage of the quality of communication and high-speed mobile Internet.

Tele2 Kazakhstan, Altel merger deal to close soon

Mobile operator Tele2 Kazakhstan announced that the deal to merge with mobile operator Altel should soon close, reports Profit.kz. All necessary clearing decisions have already been taken by national regulators. Kazakhstan national operator Kazakhtelecom, the owner of Altel, will get a 51 percent stake and 49 percent of voting shares in the joint venture. Tele2 Kazakhstan will get a 49 percent stake and 51 percent of voting shares. Tele2 Kazakhstan plans to launch LTE services after closing the deal.

Telenor Pakistan adds 1.3 mln subscribers in Q4

Telenor Pakistan posted an operating profit of NOK 584 million in the fourth quarter of 2015, up from NOK 260 a year earlier. Telenor reported fourth-quarter revenues of NOK 33.5 billion and organic revenue growth of 2%. EBITDA before other items grew 10% on an organic basis to NOK 10.9 billion. The EBITDA margin was 32%. Telenor added 6.6 million mobile subscribers during the fourth quarter, taking the total number of customers to 203 million.

Tajikistan mobile, internet subscriber base declines in 2015

The Communications Service of the Tajikistan government announced that the active mobile subscriber base as well as the internet subscriber base dropped in the country in 2015, reports Profit.kz. Mobile subscribers declined by 1.2 million, and the internet subscriber base decreased by 800,000. Over 11 million Sims circulated across the country, but active subscribers totaled 5.2 million. The Communications Service attributed the decline to the economic crisis in the country.

Beeline Kyrgyzstan organic service revenue up 7% in Q4

Services revenues of the mobile operator Beeline Kyrgyzstan dropped by 16 percent year-on-year to USD 38 million in the fourth quarter of 2015. EBITDA totaled USD 21 million, down by 9 percent. Calculated in the local currency, mobile service revenue increased by 7 percent year-on-year to KGS 2.7 billion, mainly driven by increasing interconnect revenue as a result of increased traffic and currency fluctuations.

Subscribers’ base of Beeline falls to 9.9m people

Revenue of Beeline in Uzbekistan grew by 10% year-on-year in 2015 – to 1.829 trillion soums (US$711 million). The revenue of the operator in the fourth quarter of 2015 made up 497 billion soums (US$183 million), which rose by 12% compared to 2014. Beeline subscribers’ base in Uzbekistan by the end of 2015 made up 9.9 million people, which decreased by 6% year-on-year. Number of users of data transfer services fell to 4.7 million subscribers in 2015 (-15%). Average bill for a mobile subscriber per month (ARPU) made up 16,230 soums in 2015, which grew by 18% compared to 2014.

Microsoft Acquires Groove Music App for iOS

Microsoft has acquired the Groove music app for iOS from Canadian startup Zikera. The Groove app creators confirmed the acquisition stating that, “We are thrilled to announce that Groove has been acquired by Microsoft.
Zikera in its Medium post on Wednesday added that the Groove app is no longer available to download but those who have already downloaded the app could continue to use it.

Ericsson has partnered with Etisalat to bring the Ericsson Radio Dot System to the Dubai Outlet Mall in the UAE, offering indoor mobile connectivity to shoppers and vendors. The Ericsson Radio Dot System more than doubles download speeds compared with the Mall’s previously installed indoor system.
