Qualcomm has shown off a Snapdragon class chipset that has been designed for use by in-car entertainment systems. Dialog Semiconductor has developed an AC/DC adapter interface IC for use with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 power supplies. Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 is a proprietary protocol that aims to charge mobile devices up to 75% faster than conventional USB charging technology.

UZTE Starts To Produce Two New Smartphones

Pengzhong Xingsheng, an Uzbek-Chinese joint venture on production of mobile handsets under UZTE trademark, started to produce two new smartphones. The enterprise launched production of smartphones UZTE Grand X Quad and UZTE Grand X II. The smartphone UZTE Grand X Quad has five inch display with the resolution 540×960 pixels, 4core processor MT6589/MT6167 with frequency 1.2 GHz, 8 megapixel, 1 GB Ram and internal memory – 4 GB. The handset also has 4 GB microSD card. The phone’s memory can be extended up to 32 GB. The smartphone works under Android 4.2 operating system. The second handset UZTE Grand X II has 4.5 inch sensor TTF display with the resolution of 540×960 pixels, four core processor MSM8225Q with frequency of 1.2 GHz, main camera with 8 megapixels and frontal – 0.3 megapixels, 512 Mb RAM and internal memory – 4 GB. The smartphone works under Android 4.1 operating system.

MNP to Launch on 1 February

Mobile number portability (MNP) will be fully introduced by Azerbaijan’s mobile network operators on 1 February. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies noted that the launch of MNP, which enables subscribers to retain their phone number if they switch provider, will strengthen competition in the market and lead to improved service quality. Azerbaijan’s mobile market is home to three GSM network operators: market leader Azercell, which had around 4.405 million subscribers at the end of 30 September 2013 (a market share of 46.4%), followed by Bakcell with around 30.2% of the market and Azerfon (Nar Mobile), which accounted for the remaining 23.3% of mobile customers.

Uzbekistan and Japan sign memorandum of cooperation in ICT sphere

A delegation of Ministry of Interior Affairs and Communication of Japan led by Deputy Minister and MP of the Representatives Chamber of Japanese Parliament Yoko Kamikawa paid a visit to the State Committee of Communication, Information and Telecommunication Technologies of Uzbekistan. Within the talks, the State Committee of Communication, Information and Telecommunication Technologies of Uzbekistan and Ministry of Interior Affairs and Communication of Japan signed a memorandum of cooperation in the sphere of information-communication technologies, which is directed at strengthening mutual cooperation in this area. The document envisages cooperation in such areas as development of joint projects, exchange of opinion and experience in ICT sphere, expand business contacts with companies and organizations of two nations, organization of joint seminars and conferences to provide public and private sector to improve knowledge and experience in ICT sector, etc.

Telenor LDI Communications exits ICH

Telenor LDI Communications (Pvt.) Ltd (TLC), a subsidiary of Telenor Pakistan, has, on 25 January 2014, made its exit from the International Clearing House (ICH) due to heavy losses to Telenor as an enterprise. Telenor has raised this concern a number of times with the relevant authorities. Telenor LDI Communications PVT (TLC) joined ICH in compliance with MOIT policy directive issued on 13 August 2012 endorsed by PTA. Unfortunately, this policy was never implemented in its true letter and spirit as the separate provision of Mobile Termination Rate for international incoming (MTRI) traffic termination was never determined or disbursed to mobile operators even after a lapse of more than a year.

New System of Assessment of ICT at State Bodies Approved

The Government of Uzbekistan issued a resolution “On measures on introduction of the system of assessment of current development of information-communication technologies in Uzbekistan” on 31 December 2013. The resolution approved structure of rating assessment of state of introduction of the ICT in state organizations, scheme of holding rating assessment, as well as new requirements to official websites of the state bodies and administration, state authorities in places. In particular, the main elements of the assessment of the ICT introduction includes existence and operation of the websites, compliance of official websites to requirements of legislation, quality of interactive state services, consideration of applications of individuals and legal entities, received via the Single portal of interactive state services.

Aleksandr Vorobyev Appointed As Acting Director-General of Unitel

In a statement Vimpelcom has said that Aleksandr Vorobyev has been appointed as acting director-general of Unitel LLC. Prior to appointment, he worked as financial director of the operator. Former director-general of Unitel Andrei Safronyuk, who worked in the position since June 2010, left the post as his contract expired. Aleksandr Vorobyev worked as financial director at Takom, Vimpelcom’s subsidiary in Tajikistan, between November 2011 and August 2013. In August 2013, he started to work as financial director of Unitel.

Kyrgyz Mobile Sales Reachkgs13.5bn in 9M13

Revenue generated from the provision of mobile services in Kyrgyzstan reached KGS13.45 billion (USD273 million) in the first nine months of 2013, as per the figures from the National Communications Agency. According to the agency, average revenue per user (ARPU) totaled KGS160.6 per month over the period.

Ucell Starts Wireless Packs Promotion

Ucell has introduced a promotion for its wireless services packages. The operator will offer free unlimited traffic for a month to subscribers connecting to the Modem tariff including MF 190V or MF 190S 3G USB-modems, to the Modem+ package containing either MF 631V or ZTE MF 631 modems, as well as to the Modem Turbo+ package including the MF 667 modem. Nokia in Partnership with Telenor Pakistan Introduces Nokia Asha 500, 502 and 503

Nokia Pakistan announced that the new Nokia Asha 500, 502 and 503 are available for purchase in Pakistan with 6 months free Telenor Talkshawk Internet. The Asha 500 offers a 2.8-inch screen, a 2-megapixel camera and 2G telephony while the Asha 502 comes with a 3-inch screen, and a 5-megapixel camera with flash. Asha 503 has a 3-inch screen made from curved Gorilla Glass, a 5-megapixel camera with flash, and 3.5G speeds. Alexander Vorobyov Appointed As Unitel Head

Business Unit “CIS” of VimpelCom Ltd. announced the appointment of Alexander Vorobyov as CEO of LLC Unitel. He will succeed Andrey Safronyuk, who completed his work in the company on 9 January 2014. Concurrently Alexander managed his own business, successfully developing the company. In December 2005 Alexander went for a work at OJSC “Mobile TeleSystems”, where for six years he had gone the experience from a specialist of planning and macro-analytical department in macroregion “Volga region of North-West” to the director of the department controlling corporation BCTI (Turkmenistan). From November 2011 Alexander Vorobyov worked in the VimpelCom, occupying the position of Financial Director of LLC Tacom (TM Beeline in Tajikistan), and on 16 August 2013 he was appointed as a Financial Director in LLC Unitel.

PTA Directs Mobile Operators to Withdraw Call Setup Charges

PTA had directed mobile phone operators to withdraw recently imposed call setup charges. PTA has issued these directions in the light of provision of Telecom Reorganization Act and Consumer Protection Regulations 2009. PTA has accordingly directed all companies to implement the order without causing any discomfort to the mobile phone subscribers. Mobile operators have imposed call-setup charges of Re 0.10 plus tax on each call last week and posted notice on their website about imposition of new charges.

Ucell spent UZS300bn on networks in 2013

Ucell invested UZS300 billion (USD135.92 million) into the development and expansion of its network in 2013, according to the company’s director general Osman Turan. In addition to its network upgrades – which included the rollout of Dual Carrier (DC)-HSPA+ in August 2013 – the cellco has overhauled its offices in Karshi, Qoqand, Navoi and Tashkent. Turan added that the operator is one of the largest tax payers in the country, contributing more than UZS280 billion to the state’s coffers.

PSRC grants Orange Armenia additional radio frequencies to expand 3G network

Armenia’s national telecoms regulator, the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC), has awarded mobile operator Orange Armenia additional radio frequencies to allow it to expand its 3G network in the country. In a ruling made on 25 December the PSRC confirmed that the cellco will be able to use eleven more blocks of radio frequencies until 19 November 2023, enabling it to extend its 3G footprint in the capital Yerevan, as well as in other parts of the country.

Uzmobile maps out plans for 2014

Uzmobile, the wireless arm of fixed line incumbent Uzbektelecom says it installed 140 new base stations in 2013, increasing coverage of its CDMA450 network to 71%. According to the director general of the operator Abdurashid Abdumuminov, Uzmobile will install 201 new EV-DO-enabled base stations and upgrade a further 114 existing towers with the technology in 2014. The USD17.47 million project is expected to increase the network’s footprint to 85%. Uzbektelecom will also continue to roll out fibre-based accesses (FTTx) in 2014, and plans for the infrastructure to pass 110,000 homes and businesses by the end of the year.

Afghan Mobile Coverage Reaches 90% Following 2013 Deployments

Afghan Mobile installed 240 new telecoms antennas, activated in a total of 173 districts during 2013, bringing coverage to around 480,000 un-served Afghan citizens who had no access to telecoms services in 2012. As such, more than 90% of the population now has access to mobile services, with subscriber numbers passing the 20 million mark last year.

The Snapdragon 602A processor is pre-integrated with Qualcomm’s Gobi 9×15 multimode 3G/LTE and dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE 4.0-based modules. Ucell Invests 300bn Soums to Network Development

Ucell has invested over 300 billion soums to development and expansion of its network in 2013. Vivacell-MTS Installed 143 New Base Stations across Armenia Throughout 2013

Throughout the year 2013 VivaCell-MTS implemented network geographical expansion and modernization works across Armenia. In frames of network expansion and modernization project, during 2013 VivaCell-MTS installed 143 new base stations across Armenia. The majority of the newly-installed base stations (103) were installed in rural communities, with the remaining 40 base stations installed in towns. Tele2 Kazakshtan Expands All-Net Tariff to Astana

Mobile operator Tele2 Kazakhstan has launched its ‘Everything OK 2’ tariff for subscribers in the city of Astana and in the Akmola region. On-net calls and calls to other Kazakshatn networks are offered for KZT 5 per minute under the tariff. The rate applies when calling from the home region, while calls from other regions cost KZT 11 per minute. Subscription contracts are sold in shops of the operator, as well as in retail outlets of its dealers.

Uzbek Leader Orders State Structures to Adopt Measures to Develop E-Commerce

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov at the session of the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan has ordered the state structures to adopt measures to develop electronic commerce in Uzbekistan. The session summed up results of social-economic development of Uzbekistan for 2013 and approved main priorities of economic programmes for 2014. Islam Karimov said that currently Uzbekistan issued over 10 million plastic cards, including about 2.5 million online cards.

PTA to start monitoring mobile QoS from February

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will start checking the quality of service provided by mobile operators from February. In this first test, PTA offices in major will test quality of service (QoS) and from then on it will be checked regularly, the Pakistan Daily Times reports. The regulator was criticised in the media earlier as it has not been monitoring QoS since 2011.

Baku Metro to offer DECT Wi-Fi connection

Mobile penetration reaches 71.7pc by June 2013 with 4.61pc growth

Mobile phone penetration in Pakistan has reached 71.7pc by June 2013 with growth rate of 4.61pc. The rate of penetration slowed down during fiscal year 2012-13 owing to various factors but mainly due to strict government policy for sale of Subscriber Identity Modules (SIMs) only through customer service centres and franchises of the operators. The subscribers of cellular mobile in Pakistan attained the level of 128.93 million at the end of June 2013 compared to 120.15 million as of end June 2012, revealing a growth of 6.74pc as compared to growth of 10.3pc during the corresponding period of last year. China Mobile Pakistan (CMpak) has taken the lead in attracting new subscribers by adding 4.2 million during the reported period. Telenor also added a respectable number of 3.5 million subscribers followed by Mobilink and Ufone with 1.1 and 0.67 million net additions respectively. Warid, however, dropped 793,482 subscribers during the last fiscal year due to subscriber churn and tough competition in the market.

Ministry of communications and Information Technology Announces new Internet Prices

Internet new price has been announced by Ministry of communications and Information Technology (MCIT) Afghanistan. Minister of MCIT H. E. Amirzai Sangin expressed his satisfaction for reduction in internet rate, saying that MCIT provides reasonable and cheap internet services through two ways; one through 3G services, which covers 16 provinces of the country and via Fiber Optic service; and its work is ongoing; and it has been completed in sought provinces. He said another progressive efforts are also on going in the field of IT and is the GSM and 3G of Afghan Telecom and we will open it sooner, and it will further reduce the internet prices.

According to the press service of Uzbektelecom, currently, 2361 houses in Tashkent were connected to the FTTB network of UZONLINE, its trademark for internet services. The company said that about 1,518 new houses in the capital city of Uzbekistan were connected to FTTB network in 2013.

Pakistan Expects to Raise $2 Billion from Radio Spectrum Auction

Pakistan’s Finance Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar has confirmed that the country intends to push ahead with its radio spectrum auction by this coming March. He made the announcement during a visit by Telenor’s CEO, Jon Fredrik Baksaas. The Finance Minister who also chairs the Spectrum Auction License Committee said that there is a lot of interest being shown by telecom sector in the auction of next generation spectrum license and assured that the process of auction would be smooth and transparent. The Finance Minister said that though Pakistan expects to earn an estimated US$2 billion through the auction of three spectrum licenses, although they have only allowed for US$1.2 billion in the annual budget.

Megacom Upgrades To DC-HSPA+

Kyrgyz mobile operator Megacom upgraded around 20% of its base stations last year with Dual Carrier (DC)-HSPA+ technology, which enables maximum download speeds of up to 42Mbps. The cellco said that the majority of upgraded 3.5G base stations are located in the major cities of Bishkek, Osh and Jalal-Abad, where the demand data is particularly large. State Communication Committee and ISPs Discuss Cutting Price for Internet

The State Committee for Communication, Information and Telecommunication Technologies of Uzbekistan held a meeting with the operators and internet providers. The press service of the committee said that the sides considered issues of decreasing prices for internet services in Uzbekistan. The technical capabilities of access to Internet rose by 16 times compared to 2011 and 2.12 times compared to 2012. The analysis showed that internet providers such as Tekhnoprosisten, Buzton, DosT Link, Sarkor Telecom, Unitech, NetCity, Amaliy Aloqalar Biznesi and Skyline, decreased prices from 15% to 80% based on speed of Internet tariffs. Uzbektelecom introduced new tariff plans with lower subscription fee and higher incoming traffic. The prices for individuals were decreased in average by 47%.

Kyrgyzstan mobile operator O! has expanded the coverage of its network in the Naryn region in January. New base stations were deployed in Uchkun, Kulanak, Kuyruchak, Ak-Tal and Dobolu villages, and the capacity of the network was raised significantly in At-Bashin, Kochkor, Naryn and Zhumgal municipalities. Mobile operator Orange Armenia announced that it has expanded its H+ network, offering download speeds of up to 42Mbps, in 310 new settlements in Armenia. Mobile Operators to Pay 600 Soums per Subscriber

The Government of Uzbekistan increased the sum of a payment for use of subscriber number by legal entities, rendering mobile communication services from 1 January 2014. According to the presidential resolution “On forecast of main macroeconomic figures and parameters of the state budget of Uzbekistan for 2014”, the mobile operators will pay 600 soums a month per subscriber in 2014, which grew by 100 soums compared to 2013. The payment is paid for each subscriber, number of which determined at the end of each month. The Government of Uzbekistan introduced the payment in 2012.

Sprint Looking to Revive the Nextel Brand name

USA based Sprint may be about to resurrect its dormant Nextel brand name as part of a wider revamping of its marketing efforts this year. The company has a cluster of different brand names it uses to sell services, and is said to be preparing a major review that would see them slashed to a more manageable portfolio. The company will prelaunch the Nextel brand for its corporate services. The Clearwire services would first adopt the Nextel brand, which would then absorb Sprint’s corporate customers. Poland to Auction off Radio Spectrum for LTE Services

Poland’s telecoms regulator, the UKE has announced plans to auction off blocks of radio spectrum in the 800 MHz and 2.6 GHz bands. The participants to the first auction of this type in Poland will compete for 5 licenses in the 800MHz band and for 14 frequencies in the 2.6 GHz band. The auction participants will be committed to commencing the use of the frequencies and to commercial launch of their services within 12 months of the date of delivery of the general exclusive frequency license in the 800MHz band and not later than within 36 months of the date of delivery of the general exclusive frequency license in the 2.6GHz band.

Mobile Operators to Generate USD 20 Bln from Internet Voice

Mobile network operators will generate revenues of close to USD 20 billion by 2018 through strategies involving internet based voice or “carrier OTT,” according to a new report from Juniper Research. These internet voice revenues will be derived from new service propositions and bundles delivered through partnerships with stand-alone OTT (over the top) service providers. The report found that while OTT service providers have been successful in creating user bases of mVoIP customers, many future revenue generating strategies are likely to involve traditional carriers that have a billing relationship with the end-user and guarantees QoS (Quality of Service).

Nepal’s NT and Ncell Rush to Deploy 3G Services Nationwide

Nepal’s two main mobile operators by subscribers, Nepal Telecom (NT) and Spice Nepal Private (Ncell), are said to be engaged in a race to roll out their third-generation (3G) mobile data networks across the country. While the former is actively engaged in deploying a total of 4.6 million new 3G lines in Nepal, its rival is instead ramping up efforts to expand its service footprint beyond urban areas, where is its currently focused. Both cellcos are said to be concentrating on HSPA-based technologies that offer maximum download speeds of 7.2Mbps or 3.6Mbps, with the watchdog, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA).

AT&T Testing Location Based Services in Airports

Indosat Outlines LTE Network Upgrade Plans

Indonesia’s Indosat plans to invest around US$430 million on upgrades to its network during 2014, with the bulk of the work going in preparations for LTE services. Indosat’s CEO Alexander Rusli said that the company will spend between IDR4.8 trillion to IDR5.6 trillion (US$393-USD460 million) this year. He added that the expenditure would be part of the existing IDR8 billion network capital expenditure budget.

Four Companies Interested in Nigerian Spectrum Auction

Four telecoms companies have indicated an interest in the Nigerian government’s forthcoming radio spectrum auction to be a sole nationwide provider of wholesale mobile broadband services. The applicants include underwater cable operator, MainOne, Visafone Communications, South Africa’s MTN, and UAE’s Etisalat. The reserve price for the 2.3 GHz spectrum would be set at around US$32 million for the 30 MHz block of spectrum. The winner would then have to provide network capacity at wholesale rates to other companies. The auction is expected to be carried out within the next three months.

Aircel and ZTE Strike a Deal for LTE Deployment

Indian mobile operator Aircel has enlisted China’s ZTE Corporation to deploy its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. TCC Launches 3G Network in Tonga

Telenor/Telia improve 3G coverage in Odense

Telenor Denmark has improved its 3G coverage in the Municipality of Odense, after the number of base transceiver stations (BTS) in the area more than increased from 74 to 117. The next stage of the expansion project is due to start next week, and will see the improvement of 3G coverage in Funen, the third largest island in Denmark. The improvements have been prompted by the merger of the respective Telenor and Telia 3G networks in the area. The two companies began work in May 2013 to combine their 2G/3G mobile networks and share infrastructure in order to improve mobile coverage throughout the country; the merger will take place in stages, and so far has reached large parts of central and western Jutland, the islands of Lolland-Falster and Bornholm.

Etisalat to Roll Out 1,500 New BTS In 2014

O2 announces 800MHz, 1800MHz spectrum win; no official word from regulator yet

Telefonica O2 Slovakia has announced that it won mobile spectrum licenses in the 800MHz (790MHz-862MHz) digital dividend and 1800MHz bands in the 4G auction held last month, namely Block A1.5 and A1.6 (2×10MHz in the 800MHz band) and Block B.6 (2×0.6MHz in the 1800MHz band). The cellco, which was recently acquired by Czech-led investment group PPF, said it will roll out a national LTE network utilizing the rural and in-building advantages of the 800MHz band whilst also building out its existing 1800MHz LTE coverage, currently restricted to a handful of villages which have served as a 4G test bed for the operator.

Thai Network Increases Investment in 3G Rollout

Thailand’s AIS will increase its investment in its 3G network to Bt90 billion (US$2.7 billion) from the previously announced Bt70 billion during 2013-2015. The increase in 3G investment comes after the company failed to secure a digital TV channel license when bidding rose beyond the price it was willing to pay. As the firm no longer has the investment need for the television service, it can redirect the resources towards its mobile network. AIS also plans to bid in the 1800 MHz spectrum auction that is due this coming September.

Entel to launch 4G in March; still considering brand name for Peru

Chilean wireless provider Entel plans to launch 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) services in March this year, dismissing rumors that the platform might be made available sooner. The operator’s general manager Antonio Buchi went on to say that Entel was in the process of taking control of Nextel Peru – following its purchase of the company from NII Holdings in August last year – and that it was working out a plan for the new acquisition in terms of investment for 2014. EE Announces LTE Subscriber Base Has Surpassed Two Million

UK mobile network operator EE has announced that the number of customers signed up to its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) services has now surpassed two million, doubling the company’s target of having one million 4G subscribers by end-2013. With the company saying that the ‘rapid adoption’ had been driven in part by the widespread availability of the service, it noted that with coverage now extending to 160 towns and cities, it expects to have 70% of the UK population within its network footprint by the end of this month as rollout continues. EE is investing GBP275 million (USD451 million) in its voice network this year and has pledged to ‘set a new benchmark for voice quality and reliability’.

Vodafone, Orange in New Network Sharing Agreement

Vodafone Spain and Orange Espana have initiated an integration of their respective mobile networks, in a move which can be seen as a response to a similar deal stuck between rivals Telefonica Espana (Movistar) and Xfera Moviles (Yoigo). The two wireless operators previously entered into a similar agreement to share their fibre-optic infrastructure in July 2013. The first stage of the new deal will see each operator dismantle around 1,000 base transceiver stations (BTS) in less populated areas and move its equipment to its partner’s infrastructure; further, Vodafone and Orange will be liable to half of the rental, security and maintenance costs.

Tele2 Wins Third 800 MHz LTE Block

The Estonian Technical Surveillance Authority (ETSA) has announced that Tele2 Eesti has won the country’s third block of digital dividend 800MHz (790MHz-862MHz) 4G mobile broadband spectrum after winning a competitive auction. With a starting price of EUR1.597 million (USD2.170 million), Tele2 beat competition from rival bidder Starman. Bids took place over 18 rounds, with Tele2 placing the highest eventual bid of EUR5.098 million. Annual fees for frequency resource usage are EUR24, 000. Tele2 released a statement on the same day, saying that it will begin expanding its existing 4G LTE coverage using the new 800MHz license, with rollout to encompass not only main cities but ‘95% of territory in the first half of this year’.

Ooredoo Deploys 500th LTE Base Station for National Coverage

Qatar’s Ooredoo has deployed its 500th LTE enabled base station, giving the company nationwide coverage of its 4G service. The company added that the rise of 4G has created a spike in data usage across Qatar. It has also delivered an improvement to customers using 3G and even 2G networks, as the migration to 4G has freed up space on the legacy networks.

Libya Seeks Assistance to Modernize its ICT Sector

Libya has approached the ITU seeking to establish ICT facilities in the country. Deputy ICT Minister, Mr. Mohamad Benrasali has asked for the ITU’s support in preparing a master plan to modernize ICT infrastructure in Libya to “not only world class level, but to world-leading standards.” Mr Benrasali said the master plan would focus on establishing a regulatory framework that would encourage investment in developing the ICT sector and re-building infrastructure and affirmed that capacity building would be an integral part of the plan.

Angolan Network Tests LTE-A Upgrade from Ericsson

Angola’s Unitel has demonstrated LTE-A Carrier Aggregation technology on its network, based on equipment supplied by Ericsson. The demonstration was made on both 1800MHz and 900MHz spectrum bands on a commercial network, using a commercial terminal, and took place on December 18, when Unitel transferred data across its live network in Luanda, Angola carrying commercial traffic.

Wind not bidding for 700MHz licenses

Canadian cellco Wind Mobile has withdrawn from the country’s 700MHz 4G license auction after its foreign shareholder, Egypt-based Global Telecom Holding (GTH), itself part of the Russian-backed Vimpelcom group, reportedly declined to fund the bidding. The ten remaining bidders include eight companies already active in Canada’s cellular network operating market: Bell, Rogers, Telus, MTS, SaskTel, Videotron, Bragg Communications (Eastlink) and TBayTel. The other two are Feenix Wireless and Novus Wireless, part of Novus Entertainment, a provider of fibre internet, TV and digital phone services in Vancouver and surrounding areas of British Columbia.

ARPT publishes terms and conditions for 3G deployment in optional provinces

Algerian telecoms watchdog the Autorite de Regulation de la Poste et des Telecoms (ARPT) has published its Decision No.1/SP/PC/ANRT/2014, dated 8 January 2014, which outlines the terms and conditions of deployment of 3G commercial services in optional wilayas. According to the document, the launch of 3G services in additional towns and areas is subject to authorization by the regulator. The concession will be issued at the request of the operator and the application must be accompanied by a deployment map outlining the coverage level in the municipalities, with list of 3G-enabled base transceiver stations (BTS) in the specified mandatory provinces.

Unitel demonstrates first LTE-A in Africa with Ericsson

Claiming a first in Africa, Angolan cellco Unitel and Swedish equipment provider Ericsson have successfully demonstrated LTE Advanced (LTE-A) Carrier Aggregation technology, on a live network and using commercial terminal equipment. SURE calls on Huawei for 4G base station rollout

Bahrain Telecommunications Company (Batelco) has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Chinese vendor Huawei covering the delivery of 4G services for the former’s SURE-branded subsidiaries in Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man. Under the terms of the agreement, Huawei will deliver and integrate 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) base stations into SURE’s network, with the vendor saying that its Wireless SingleRAN, EPC and IMS networks will enable a wide variety of high-performance mobile applications and multimedia services, including video calling and conferencing, high-definition content transmissions, high-speed video downloads and uploads, and faster access to social networking platforms.

MTN Launches Zambia’s First LTE Network

MTN Zambia has launched Zambia’s first commercial Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in selected locations in Lusaka, Kitwe, Ndola and Livingstone. MTN Zambia has been testing the technology since August 2013, the second stage of the deployment progress, which is already underway, will see coverage extended to several new locations. CEO Ismail advised customers to get their LTE routers and SIM cards, which come with a free pre-loaded internet bundle, from service centres in the stated coverage areas, adding that modems and handsets will be available soon.

SK Telecom Tests 300Mbps Download Speeds over LTE Network

SK Telecom has successfully developed “LTE-Advanced 3 Band Carrier Aggregation (CA)” technology for the first time in the world. The technology company unveiled aggregates 3 bands — 20MHz+10MHz +10MHz — to support speeds of up to 300Mbps. Global standardization process for LTE-Advanced 3 band CA is currently underway and SK Telecom, with its achievement, says that it expects to play a pivotal role in this process. SK Telecom plans to showcase its LTE-Advanced 3 band CA at MWC 2014, to be held in Barcelona next month. The company will demonstrate 450Mbps LTE-A by aggregating three component carriers (20MHz+ 20MHz+20MHz).

Elisa Awards LTE Rollout Contract to NSN; Launches LTE-800

Elisa Corporation Finland has selected Nokia Solutions & Networks (NSN) as the sole supplier for its Long Term Evolution (LTE) network rollout. According to a joint press release, the contract will cover a period of five years (from 2014 to 2018) and is deemed by the vendor as ‘the single largest mobile telecommunications deal in Finland’, although no financial details were disclosed. Under the contract, NSN will upgrade its efficient NetAct network management system to integrate the operator’s LTE network into the existing management framework. The vendor will implement its Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Stations that support Elisa’s network across all technologies and allow the operator to scale capacity depending on changing customer demands.

Movistar aiming for 200,000 LTE subscribers in first year

Spanish-backed cellco Movistar Chile intends to end January with 20,000 Long Term Evolution (LTE) subscribers and has sets its sights on hitting 200,000 users by the end of its first year offering the service in November 2014, according the operator’s product and services manager Rodrigo Sajuria. Sajuria claimed that the company had not experienced difficulties and was offering download speeds of up to 40Mbps. The manager added that indoor coverage could be improved greatly if the company is successful in acquiring rights to 700MHz spectrum in the upcoming auction.

3 Ireland to Introduce LTE

The Irish mobile operator Hutchison 3G has announced that it plans to launch 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) services. The enhanced 4G service will be available free to all subscribers with LTE-enabled devices until 31 July, after which time it will cost EUR4.99 (USD6.76) a month for post-paid customers; pricing for pre-paid users has not been disclosed. The new network will cover 60% of the population in Galway, Limerick and Waterford at launch, plus 40% of the population in Dublin and Cork, the. Rival operators Meteor Mobile and Vodafone have already introduced their own LTE-based services, with launches in September 2013 and October 2013 respectively.

KT enables higher LTE-A speeds in Seoul

South Korea’s KT Corp has reportedly implemented downlink speeds of 220Mbps over its LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network in the Irwon-dong and Suseo-dong regions of Gangnam, in southern Seoul. However, in order for consumers to benefit from the increased speeds they will require LTE-A compatible handsets, with such devices widely expected to be launched in the first half of this year. KT is also said to have developed its mobile broadband technology further in order to provide downlink speeds of 300Mbps by tying up two 20MHz blocks of spectrum. The operator is expected to introduce the technology at the Mobile World Congress due to be held in Barcelona, Spain at the end of next month.

China’s 4G Subscriber Base to Exceed 30 Million by End of 2014

China is expected to end next year with at least 30 million 4G subscribers, according to the Minister of Industry and Information Technology, Miao Wei. He also said that the industry is expected to invest around US$16.5 billion developing its LTE based 4G networks during 2014. The minister said that the investment in 4G services would make up almost one-third of China’s total investment in mobile communications next year.

Google has shown off a “smart contact lens” that it says can provide feedback to the wearer about their blood sugar levels. It’s aimed at people with diabetes who routinely need to keep control of their blood sugar levels, often with regular blood tests. The company is testing a smart contact lens that’s built to measure glucose levels in tears using a tiny wireless chip and miniaturized glucose sensor that are embedded between two layers of soft contact lens material. SK Telecom Inks Deal to Share LTE Knowledge with China Telecom Corporation

SK Telecom (SKT) has agreed to share its knowledge related to Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology with China Telecom Corporation. It is understood that SKT will help the Chinese company set up its 4G infrastructure in Shanghai by sharing both its technology and experience. Telecom New Zealand Wins Bidding for Last Block of Radio Spectrum

Telecom New Zealand has won the bidding to secure the last remaining block of 2×5 MHz lot of 700 MHz radio spectrum that was left unsold from last year’s auction. Telecom bid NZ$83 million for this final lot, in addition to the total of NZ$66 million for three lots in the initial auction round. The purchase of a fourth 2×5 MHz lot is conditional upon approval from the Commerce Commission. Thai Regulator Pushing Ahead with Radio Spectrum Auction

Thailand’s telecoms regulator, the NBTC has said that it does not expect the recent political problems in the country to disrupt its planned radio spectrum auction this coming September. The details for the auction along with the reserve price are due to be discussed by the telecoms panel next month. The regulator, in an attempt to avoid the controversy over its 3G license auction, has hired outside advisors from the ITU to help set the reserve prices and the regulatory conditions for the spectrum licenses. The auction is expected offer blocks in both the 1800 MHz and 1900 MHz spectrum bands which expire in September.

China Mobile Flexes 3G Muscles As Market Expands 78.8%

China’s mobile sector has expanded by 11.1% year-on-year to 1.223 billion users, whilst a 3G boom has seen mobile data subscribers increase by 78.8% over the same period to 417.323 million, according to data published by the nation’s trio of wireless providers, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, for end-December 2013. China Mobile registered a total of 767.206 million customers for end-2013, of which 191.623 million were 3G customers, equating to a 62.2% share of the total sector and 45.9% of the 3G segment compared to 64.0% and 37.7% respectively twelve months earlier.

Avantel enlists NSN for complete LTE rollout

Mobile sector newcomer Avantel has selected Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) to roll out its Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile infrastructure. Under the build-operate-transfer agreement, NSN will deliver an LTE network using its Flexi Multiradio 10 base stations and Evolved Packet Core (EPC). Smart Switches on LTE in Phnom Penh

Cambodian mobile operator Smart has announced the commercial launch of its 4G LTE network, offering mobile broadband at maximum downstream speeds of 55Mbps. The company’s 4G services are currently available at six locations in Phnom Penh: Naga World Hotel and Casino, Sovanna Shopping Centre, Ratana Plaza Shopping Mall, De Castle Toul Kork, Phnom Penh International Airport and Smart Store Beung Trabek. A1 Launches 800 MHz LTE Network in 200 Locations

A1 Telekom Austria has announced that it has used its newly acquired 800MHz spectrum to extend its Long Term Evolution (LTE) coverage to 200 locations across the country, including a number of rural regions never previously covered by its 3G network. A1 says that the deployment programme means that around 45% of the population is now covered by its 4G network. A1 acquired 2×20MHz blocks of 800MHz spectrum in the Telekom Control Commission’s (TKK’s) ‘combinatory clock’ auction in October 2013. In addition, the telco snagged 2×15MHz blocks of 900MHz frequencies and 2×35MHz blocks of 1800MHz spectrum, paying a total ofEUR1.03 billion (USD1.41 billion) for the bandwidth.

China Mobile has announced it started offering Apple 5S and 5C as of 17th January. ¬It is likely that China Mobile and Apple have high expectations to improve respective sales from this deal, however given the current characters of the market, and the Smartphone purchasing trend in China, the two companies involved will need to do a lot more to yield any significant return. The latest data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, the global market leader in consumer panels, reports by the end of Q3 of 2013, approximately 63% of all Apple handsets in China are already on China Mobile’s network, which means even before the recent sales agreement, over half Apple devices is already on China Mobile’s network.

Alcatel-Lucent Reports 2013 Surge in Mobile Network Infections Affects 11.6 Million Devices

Alcatel-Lucent has released new data showing that security threats to mobile devices continues its rapid rise, infecting at any time more than 11.6 million devices and putting their owners at increased risk for stolen personal and financial information; bill shock resulting from pirated data usage; and extortion in exchange for device control. Meanwhile, the security threat to home networks remained constant with traditional “fixed” malware types starting to make the jump to mobile devices. Due to the unique position of Alcatel-Lucent’s network security and analytic products within networks, it can measure the impact of traffic types traversing the network, including malicious and cyber-security threats. The report found that mobile malware infections increased 20 percent in 2013, with 4G LTE devices being the most likely to be infected. Android devices accounted for 60% percent of total mobile network infections, which frequently took the form of trojanized applications downloaded from third party app stores, Google Play Store or by phishing scams. Forty percent of mobile malware originated from Windows laptops tethered to a phone or connected directly through a mobile USB stick or MIFI hub. Infections on iPhone devices and BlackBerry devices made up less than 1 percent.

UZTE to produce new smartphones and modems in 2014

Pengzhong Xingsheng, an Uzbek-Chinese joint venture on production of mobile handsets under UZTE trademark, will expand a line of smartphones and start to produce modems in 2014, the director-general of the company Liu Xiao Dong. Pengzhong Xingsheng launched production of mobile handsets and its accessories in Syrdarya region of Uzbekistan in July 2013.The cost of the project was US$3.16 million. The project initiators are ZTE (H.K.) Limited and Peng Sheng LLC. They created joint venture Pengzhong Xingsheng on a parity basis to implement the project. The capacity of the plant is 100,000 applications a year. It is expected that 10% of product will be imported and the localization level will make up 30%.

Sony and Microsoft in Talk to Launch New Windows Phone

Sony is currently in talks with Microsoft about releasing a new Windows Phone device as early as mid-2014. The unit would reportedly carry the Vaio brand, just like Sony’s Windows-based computers. Nothing has been set in stone quite yet, but the talks between Sony and Microsoft have reportedly continued after Microsoft’s announcement that it would be acquiring Nokia’s Devices & Services division, so it appears that the possibility of Microsoft owning its own Windows Phone hardware business doesn’t worry Sony. Microsoft is also reportedly in talks with ZTE concerning new phones as well.

Lenovo buys Google’s Motorola Mobility business

Lenovo will acquire Google’s Motorola Mobility smartphone business in a USD 2.91 billion deal. The consideration includes USD 1.41 billion paid at close, comprised of USD 660 million in cash and USD 750 million in Lenovo ordinary shares, while the remaining USD 1.5 billion will be paid in the form of a three-year promissory note. The acquisition includes the Motorola brand and Motorola Mobility’s portfolio of smartphones while Google will maintain ownership of the vast majority of the Motorola Mobility patent portfolio. As part of its ongoing relationship with Google, Lenovo will receive a license to this portfolio of patents and other intellectual property. The transaction is subject to the satisfaction of regulatory requirements and customary closing conditions.

ZTE to Present First Smart watch, New Phones at CES

ZTE will unveil new smartphones and its first smart watch at CES in Las Vegas. The BlueWatch targets the fitness market, offering features such as a pedometer and recording of other physical activity and health measurements. The device connects to a smartphone over Bluetooth, allowing users also to check for incoming calls and messages on the device. The new smartphones include the Grand S II, the latest device in its high-end range, which features a number of new voice control and audio options. NSN Upgrades Telkomsel’s GSM, 3.5G Networks

Telkomsel Indonesia has upgraded its GSM and 3.5G HSPA+ infrastructure across the country using Nokia Solutions and Network’s (NSN’s) radio and core network, as well as comprehensive services such as network planning and optimization, network implementation and system integration. In addition, NSN provided its refarming services for the 1800MHz GSM band. ZTE Debuts New Voice Control Software for Smartphones

ZTE has announced the debut of new voice control technology for easier hands-free operation of its latest smartphones. Huawei has shown off its latest smartphone — the Ascend Mate2 4G that comes with a 6.1-inch screen and quad-core 1.6 GHz processor. Alcatel-Lucent has been selected by Lazus to deploy ‘metro’ networks in nine cities in Colombia. The IP/MPLS solution, to be deployed over this year, will deliver mobile backhaul and wholesale metropolitan services for IPTV and Triple Play, business and cloud service providers. The network will be deployed in the Colombian cities of Bogota, Barranquilla, Cartagena, Santa Marta, Sincelejo, Monteria, Bucaramanga, Cali and Popayan.

Ericsson and China Mobile Demonstrate LTE to GSM Voice Handover

Ericsson and China Mobile have demonstrated the world’s first enhanced Single Radio Call Continuity (eSRVCC) towards GSM on a live LTE TDD network. It is a milestone for China Mobile to demonstrate that seamless voice services can be delivered to consumers over the operator’s new LTE TDD network in co-existence with its large installed-base GSM network. In the demonstration, the testing devices in a moving vehicle showed seamless eSRVCC voice handover without any perceivable interruption. Handover delay in the live network environment was measured constantly below 200 ms, far less than the 300 ms for SRVCC defined in 3GPP.

Alcatel-Lucent Looking at a Sale of its Enterprise Business

Alcatel-Lucent is reportedly in talks with possible buyers for its enterprise business. ¬The enterprise unit sells telecommunications equipment and services and in 2012 had revenues of US$1 billion, although it is understood to have posted an operating loss of EUR12 million. The possible buyers of the division include Unify — a Gores Group and Siemens joint venture, an unnamed Chinese investor and an unnamed industrial company from “outside the USA”. The division could raise around EUR250 million for the company which is in the midst of ongoing restructuring to refocus on fewer key products and services.

Samsung Shows Off New Lite Tablet

Samsung has shown off its latest Android tablet, a smaller version of its Galaxy Tab 3 that comes with the Lite suffix. The Galaxy Tab3 Lite (7″) sports a slim, light-weight design with a more compact bezel that the company says makes it comfortable to carry around in one hand. In addition, the menu bar is situated on the device’s bezel, rather than on the 7-inch screen, in order to maximize the amount of the display used for services. It comes with a 1.2GHz Dual Core processor, and also hosts a 2-megapixel rear-facing. The Galaxy Tab3 Lite (7″) will be offered globally and will be available in White and Black. Ericsson Wins Bahrain Managed Services Contract

Zain Bahrain has signed a four-year partnership with Ericsson to manage, plan and optimize its new network that will be launched by the end of March. Under the four-year managed services and support agreement, Ericsson will manage the day-to-day operations of Zain’s new network. The network transformation, which began in April 2013, will give Zain Bahrain a new state-of-the-art network and promises faster download speeds and wider coverage. The new network will also be delivered by Ericsson. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Huawei Announces 43 Percent Jump in Full Year Profits

Huawei has released its unaudited financial results, according to which its revenues for 2013 are expected to be up by around 8 percent at between CNY238 billion to CNY 240 billion (around US$39.8 billion). More than 75 percent of the carrier network business group’s revenue in 2013 came from the world’s top 50 telecom carriers, while the proportion of revenue from services and software in the carrier business increased to 37 percent in 2013 from 34 percent in 2012. Huawei says that it also generated rapid growth in its consumer and enterprise business groups. Huawei’s audited results are due to be announced in the second quarter of 2014.

Nokia’s Search for a New CEO Narrows to Two Insiders

Nokia’s long search for a new CEO is reportedly focusing on several inside candidates, although the firm is still open to an outsider joining the firm. When Nokia announced the deal to sell its handsets division to Microsoft, the group CEO, Stephen Elop stood down from the role, although he remains the head of the handsets business and will move with it to Microsoft. Rajeev Suri, the head of the NSN division, which will be generating over 90% of Nokia’s revenues following the sale of its handset, has been named as a likely candidate. Nokia’s Finance Chief, Timo Ihamuotila has also been considered. External candidates have not been ruled out, although the race appears to be narrowing to the two internal candidates.

ZTE to Release a Rugged Android Smartphone

China’s ZTE may be able to launch a rugged smartphone for the local market, according to photo leaks from a Chinese website. The company is reported to have secured approval to sell the G601U, an Android smartphone that is clad in an impact absorbing rubber skin and sealed joints. The specifications are modest for a new Android phone, coming with a 1.3Gh processor, a 4-inch screen and a display of just 800×480 pixels. However, it also comes with a sizable battery that should provide a solid day of full use without recharging.

Google and Samsung Sign 10-Year Patent Agreement

In a very brief statement Google and Samsung has announced a 10-year patent deal between the two companies. Samsung and Google already work closely together and Samsung is the leading Android OS smartphone manufacturer, but the two sides were still technically breaching each other’s patents all over the place. The statement added that the agreement can reduce the potential for litigation and let the two companies focus instead on innovation, which is a pointed nod at Apple and patent trolls.

LG to Add Fingerprint ID to Smartphones This Year

LG Electronics will integrate fingerprint recognition capabilities to its premium smartphone models such as G2 Pro and G3 later this year. LG’s fingerprint technology is expected to be applied to at the back of phone. The technology development for the G2 Pro nears completion, according to Korean press reports. A prototype for the G3 has been produced and the company is currently testing the fingerprint recognition functions. Apple and Pantech have already integrated fingerprint recognition capabilities to their iPhone 5S and Pantech Vega Secret Note smartphones.

Samsung and KT Launch World’s First Commercial LTE Broadcast Service

Korea Telecom (KT) has announced that it has launched the world’s first commercial eMBMS (evolved Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Service). KT’s service is based on Samsung network hardware, and works on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 tablet. To access the service, Galaxy Note 3 users will be required to download a software upgrade. In an effort to commercialize LTE eMBMS, Samsung and KT have worked together for a number of years to develop network equipment and device solutions. At initial stage, the two companies have showcased the LTE eMBMS technology service at Mobile World Congress in February 2013.
