Pakistani mobile operator Mobilink has appointed Anjum Rahman as its director of communication and sustainability, starting 2 January 2017. Rahman will replace Omar Manzur, who took up a role at VimpelCom earlier in November 2016. Rahman led Telenor’s communication department between 2010 and 2012, before which she was associated with Express Media Group.
Mobile operator Armentel, working under the Beeline Armenia brand, has significantly expanded the coverage of its LTE network in the city of Yerevan, reports Arka.am. The number of the operator’s LTE base stations doubled in the capital city after Armentel launched LTE services there earlier this September. Mobile operator Beeline Uzbekistan has extended a promotion to its customers buying either Oy or Oy+ packages using the self-service mobile application Beeline Uzbekistan. A voice bundle containing 500 minutes of weekly on-net calls is offered as a bonus under the promotion valid until 13 February. Kyrgyzstan mobile operator Megacom has introduced a promotion for subscribers connecting to the ‘4G Unlim’ tariff. The customers will get a free Wi-Fi- router when subscribing to the tariff for 90 days. The activation rate of the tariff has been reduced from KGS 3,870 to KGS 3,100 under the promotion. Mobile operator Beeline Uzbekistan has introduced a promotion, raising its credit for services limit. The operator has raised the maximum size of the credit to USD 10, available until 3 January. The price of the service totals USD 0.25. Tajikistan mobile operator Tcell has brought in an annual package supplying 10 GB of mobile internet traffic per year and 120 minutes of daily on-net calls. Kazakshtan mobile operator Kcell is running a promotion aimed at corporate subscribers buying the iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus smartphones on instalments.
Qualcomm and Google have announced a new collaboration to support the development of a variety of connected devices aimed at both consumer and industrial applications. The collaboration itself will focus on combining Google’s Android operating system with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor, which if successful, could give the internet giant a much more significant role in the burgeoning IoT arena. Google has been relatively quiet in the IoT space to-date, though linking the OS’ market penetration with its public cloud business unit could create a powerful player in the segment. Russian mobile operator Vimpelcom, working under the Beeline brand, plans to modify call rates to Uzbekistan for subscribers of its ‘Welcome’ service. The new price of RUB 3.5 per minute will be applied from 21 December. The operator offers calls to Uzbekistan for RUB 1.9 per minute for subscribers of its ‘#Everything Is Possible’ tariff.

Portugal sees 10.5% growth in mobile broadband users

There were 6.3 million effective users of mobile broadband in Portugal at the end of the third quarter of 2016, which is 7.7 percent more than in the previous quarter and 10.5 percent more than in the same period in 2015, according to data published by the National Communications Authority (Anacom). The growth was due to the increase in mobile internet users (+14.4% in Q3) as part of bundled offers and the increasing smartphone penetration.

Nearly 2.5 million smartphones were shipped to Myanmar in the third quarter of 2016, which represents a growth of 26 percent year-on-year, according to a report from International Data Corporation (IDC). The report further shows that this has been the strongest year-on-year growth seen in Myanmar’s budding smartphone market since the third quarter of 2015. However, shipments declined 10 percent sequentially, from 2.7 million in the second quarter of this year, as soft retail sales and the typhoon season negatively impacted smartphone buying in the country.

Docomo strikes 5G deal with China’s CAICT

Japanese operator NTT Docomo has signed a memorandum of understanding with China Academy of Information and Communication Technology (CAICT) to jointly investigate the standardization of 5G technologies and available frequency bands, effective immediately. Under the terms of the agreement, Docomo will start participating in the 5G trial launched by the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group, which was established at CAICT’s initiative in February 2013, to verify 5G technologies and systems.

Far EasTone completes 5G tests with Ericsson

Taiwanese operator Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) has completed the first 5G tests with Ericsson. Indoor and outdoor tests were carried out in the 15GHz frequency bands, DigiTimes reports. Ericsson provided prototype 5G equipment, FET said. The tests verified network coverage, mobility, and peak traffic achievable using the 15GHz spectrum. The prototype 5G equipment achieved a download speed of over 5 Gbps, FET added.

Myanma Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) has expanded the SIM card registration service to post offices nationwide. MPT customers can now register their SIM cards at 782 Myanmar Post offices nationwide. Regulator prevented illegal sales of 28,000 Sims this yr

Russian federal telecommunications regulator Roskomnadzor has prevented the sale of over 28,000 unregistered Sims this year. The number of illegal Sims sold grew in the second half to over 20,000. Unregistered Sims are mainly sold online. Most of such Sims are purchased under corporate contracts with legal entities and resold later. Sims from mobile operator Beeline made up half of all illegally sold Sims, with Megafon making up 18 percent, MTS 16 percent and Tele2 Russia 12 percent.

Armenian mobile operator VivaCell, a subsidiary of Russian mobile operator MTS, has introduced additional LTE traffic bundles to subscribers of its Viva tariff line. Australia govt activates 15 mobile base stations

Fifteen new mobile base stations have been switched on in time for Christmas under the Australian government’s Mobile Black Spot Program. T-Mobile US reaches nearly 1 Gbps in latest LTE lab test

T-Mobile US said it’s achieved nearly 1 Gbps over the LTE network in a lab test in the past week. O2 Czech Republic tests 4.5G, reaches over 500 Mbps

O2 Czech Republic tested 4.5G in real conditions in a Prague administrative district during peak times. The combination of carrier aggregation of several bands (LTE 800 FDD, LTE 1800 FDD, LTE 2600 FDD and LTE 2600 TDD), the technology 4×4 MIMO and 256QAM modulation allow theoretical speeds up to 1.2 Gbps. Under real conditions, with a borrowed device from Huawei, the operator reached speeds between 500 and 550 Mbps. No terminal devices are available with 4.5G support yet; they are expected to reach the market at the end of 2017.

Google buys smartwatch OS developer Cronologics

Google has acquired smartwatch OS developer Cronologics for an undisclosed amount. In a statement confirming the transaction, the Cronologics team said it will be joining Google’s Android Wear division to “continue pushing the frontier of wearable technology and smartwatches with Android Wear 2.0 and beyond.” The startup was founded in 2014 by former Google workers Lan Rcohe, Leor Stern, and John Lagerling and its Alexa-controlled software has already been used in the CoWatch wearable device. Qualcomm and Google target IoT devices with Android Things

Qualcomm and Google have announced a new collaboration to support the development of a variety of connected devices aimed at both consumer and industrial applications. Asustek, HTC, Acer to fall short of their smartphone shipment targets for 2016

The three-leading Taiwan-based smartphone vendors, Asustek Computer, HTC and Acer, all will see their smartphone shipments fall short of their respective targets set for 2016, according to industry sources. Asustek are expected to ship 20 million smartphones in 2016 compared to its target of 25 million due to lower-than-expected sales in China, the US and Europe, as well as delayed shipments of its ZenFone 3 series products, said the sources.

Nokia files patent infringement suits against Apple

Nokia announced that it has today filed complaints against Apple in Germany and the US, alleging that Apple products infringe a number of Nokia patents. Nokia said it agreed a partial licence with Apple in 2011 for some of its technology, but since then has been unable to reach agreement on extending the licence to other patented inventions by Nokia. Nokia said it is in the process of filing further actions in other jurisdictions.

Telecom Italia to pilot 5G network in Turin

Turin city council has confirmed that Telecom Italia (TIM) will debut its 5G network in the northern Italian city next year and connect 3,000 users by 2018. “Turin will be the first city in Italy to experience a 5G network thanks to an agreement signed by TIM and smart city councilor Paola Pisano,” announced Turin mayor Charia Appendino, according to website Cor.com. The announcement comes after TIM joined forces with Cisco-backed startup Altiostar to conduct the first live test of a virtual radio access network (vRAN) in Europe at TIM’s Turin innovation labs.

Vodafone demos NB-IoT with Nokia, Telit in Germany

Vodafone Germany has partnered with Nokia and Telit to develop a Narrowband-IoT system, which was recently demonstrated at its Open Lab in Dusseldorf. The system uses an Intel chipset integrated into a NB-IoT module. In the trial, it was embedded into a Shitek ultrasonic gas meter to transmit data on gas flow over a 4G Vodafone test network. This technology enables radio signals to reach further inside buildings to connect sensors and encourages lower power consumption, with battery life prolonged for up to 15 years.
