PTA Blocks 200,000 IP Addresses to Control Grey Traffic

PTA has also conducted an extensive audit of the whitelist IPs. Now whitelisting of IPs is being done after a very stringent check and a strict SOP has been made in this regard. As a result the IP whitelist has been rationalized and reduced from 51000 to 10,360. In addition to this, PTA has launched a 24/7 complaint center.

ICE Gets Green Light for 4G

Costa Rica’s high court has rejected an injunction filed by Spanish-backed wireless operator Movistar against the launch of commercial 4G services by ICE Celular (Kolbi brand). Movistar argued that the 2600MHz band frequencies used by Kolbi for its LTE network had not been assigned for mobile services in the National Plan for Allocation of Frequencies. The cellco claimed that under the current legal framework, its concession to operate telecommunications services allowed it to utilize the spectrum. Kolbi is planning to move ahead with a full commercial launch of 4G services, but has not given a timeline for the activation.

Ofcom Publishes Findings of 3G Coverage Study

UK telecoms watchdog Ofcom has unveiled its findings following an examination aimed at determining whether the country’s mobile operators are meeting their respective 3G coverage obligations. With EE, O2 UK, Hutchison 3G UK (Three) and Vodafone UK having all agreed to roll out third-generation networks covering 90% of the population by 30 June 2013, the regulator has now confirmed that all but the latter achieved this goal. AT&T Growing an Intelligent Network by Going Small

AT&T is now using a new planning tool to help it smooth out its small cell deployment. It is a tool created by AT&T Labs to analyze radio waves in order to determine the best positions for the tiny base stations to optimize coverage. The operator has already been using the tool in the field. For instance, HARP has been put to use at a high-rise small cell deployment in Chicago.
AT&T has started its small cell deployment with 3G base stations. It intends to move to “multi-mode” units that can spit out 4G LTE, 3G HSPA+ and WiFi over time.

Smartphone Subscriptions to Triple To 5.6 Bln By 2019

Mobile subscriptions will jump to 9.3 billion by 2019, of which over 60 percent (or 5.6 billion) will be for smartphones, according to the Ericsson Mobility Report. WCDMA/HSPA networks are expected to cover 90 percent of the world’s population by 2019. Nearly two-thirds or 65 percent of the world’s population will be covered by 4G/LTE networks. The report also shows that the rapid pace of smartphone uptake has been phenomenal and is set to continue. It took more than five years to reach the first billion smartphone subscriptions, but it will take less than two to hit the 2 billion mark and between now and 2019, smartphone subscriptions will triple. Smartphone traffic is expected to grow by 10 times between 2013 and 2019, reaching 10 exabytes.

Huawei Launches Industry’s First High-Density AODF

Huawei has announced the release of the automatic optical distribution frame (AODF), which has the highest density in the industry. The AODF creates automatic fiber connections and improves the efficiency of managing and operating services on fiber networks, helping carriers to build automatic and intelligent fiber infrastructure networks. The AODF can reduce site visits to equipment rooms located in remote areas in addition, its innovative micro-manipulator is small and easy to operate, and can be fully embedded in the AODF cabinet. It also uses a modular design, which makes the AODF easy to expand and cost-effective. The AODF supports smooth evolution and upgrade from a traditional network to an intelligent fiber network.

Alcatel-Lucent Wins 4G, Small Cells Deal in Aruba

Alcatel-Lucent has deployed a 4G LTE mobile broadband network for SETAR, a quadruple-play telecoms operator on the Caribbean island of Aruba. The deployment, the first of its type on the island, makes use of 20MHz of spectrum in the 1800MHz frequency band to deliver high speed mobile services for smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices. SETAR has also deployed small cells in strategic locations around the island to increase indoor access to its 3G W-CDMA/HSPA network, it announced alongside the 4G launch release. Alcatel-Lucent’s LTE solution deployment includes the ‘lightRadio’ LTE Radio Access Network (RAN), Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and Subscriber Data Manager systems, alongside lightRadio small cells adding capacity and coverage to SETAR’s existing 3G service.

Nokia Eyed Possible Takeover Bid for Alcatel-Lucent

Nokia has ruled out an acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent, although it had considered the possibility once it completes the sale of its handset business to Microsoft. Nokia looked at whether Alcatel’s IP-routing and wireless divisions would fit with its own infrastructure division, but ruled out making a formal approach. The move would have been a slight reversal for NSN though, as Alcatel-Lucent operates in areas where NSN has been extracting itself from in recent years with disposals. A deal could have been a partial acquisition of assets, or a full takeover, with likely disposals afterwards.
