Ufone has introduced new Huawei Ascend Mate in the market. The PTCL group posted a steady growth of 17% with an increase in Net Profit amounting to PKR 7.9 billion for 1st half of FY2013, while Gross Profit for the period under review stood at PKR 24.1 billion.

Altel continues the expansion of its LTE network and plans to cover new suburbs of Astana and Almaty with its Altel 4G service by the end of Q3. Altel will receive funding for its LTE network from Kazakhstan bank Sberbank. Megacom has raised the coverage and capacity of its 3.75G network in the Naryn region, and also upgraded its GPRS network. Mobile operator Kar-Tel, working under the Beeline Kazakhstan brand, has started selling 3G routers. Afghanistan’s ICT ministry has signed a contract for the seventh telecom rollout project that aims to bring services to areas not currently covered.

Qualcomm has announced that its third fiscal quarter revenues rose by more than a third to US$6.24 billion, boosted by increased smartphone chip shipments. Qualcomm Technologies has enabled the world’s first LTE-Advanced smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor.

Altel Gets Funding From Sberbank for LTE Project

Altel will receive funding for its LTE network from Kazakhstan bank Sberbank. The funds will allow the operator to deploy the network and to acquire end-user equipment. Altel plans to launch its LTE network in Karaganda, Aktau, Atyrau, Aktobe by end-2013, and all regional centers across the country will be connected to LTE services by end-2014. Altel is a subsidiary of national operator Kazakhtelecom.

Megacom Expands 3.75G Network in Regions

Megacom has raised the coverage and capacity of its 3.75G network in the Naryn region, and also upgraded its GPRS network. The network was also modernized in Naryn city, as well as in Dostuk town and Tash-Bashat, Dzhalgyz-Terek, Debeluy, Uckhun and Akh-Tal villages. Data transmission capacity was also raised in Kara-Balta town, and in Sokluk, Tosh-Bulak, Besh-Kyungey villages in the Chuya region.

State Bank Suggests Changes to 3G License Terms

The State Bank of Pakistan believes that the government could generate USD 630 million from a 3G spectrum auction. However, the bank has suggested some changes to the terms and conditions of the auction, the Business Recorder writes. The State Bank believes that the 3G licenses could generate significant revenues for the Pakistani government as the base price has been set at USD 210 million per license and there are three licenses available. However, the bank says that allowing one firm to bid for two licenses goes against the spirit of competition in the industry. Additionally, the bank recommends that payment for the licenses be staggered after an initial payment of 50 percent of the bid price, rather than the currently suggested one-time upfront fee.

Altel to Expand LTE Network

Altel continues the expansion of its LTE network. The operator plans to cover new suburbs of Astana and Almaty with its Altel 4G service by the end of Q3. The services will be launched in Talgar, Kaskelen, Kalshagay, Yesik, Borovoye and Shchuchinsk. The operator plans to stop the connection of new subscribers to its Jet 3G services in Almaty and Astana from 2 August. Jet 3G subscribers will be offered to switch to LTE services from the operator under promotional conditions, and free LTE end-user devices will be offered.

PTCL Posts 31% Growth in Revenue for 1st Half of FY 2013

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), the largest ICT services provider in the country, has posted strong financial results in the 1st half of FY2013. The financial results for the period ending 30th June, 2013 were announced today at the company’s Board of Directors meeting held at a local hotel in Islamabad. The PTCL group posted a steady growth of 17% with an increase in Net Profit amounting to PKR 7.9 billion for 1st half of FY2013, while Gross Profit for the period under review stood at PKR 24.1 billion. Growth in the company’s revenue stream also showed a significant increase of 31 %, with Net Profit standing at Rs 6.3 billion, while Gross Profit was recorded at Rs 13.8 billion.

Kar-Tel starts selling Wi-Fi routers

Mobile operator Kar-Tel, working under the Beeline Kazakhstan brand, has started selling 3G routers. The routers enable users to connect up to five devices to the internet over Wi-Fi. The package includes the router, charger and Sim connected to the advanced package containing 10 MB traffic. The operator has expanded its 3G network this year, adding around 100 new 3G base stations.

Beeline Connects To Mobilink Network

Russian mobile operator Vimpelcom, working under the Beeline brand, has deployed a direct DLD/ILD connection to the network of Pakistan mobile operator Mobilink. The link was deployed as part of a strategic project on traffic transfer optimization within the Vimpelcom Ltd. group. The direct link will enable the operators to raise services quality and cut expenses.

Megacom Offers Access To Geopay System

Megacom has integrated the GeoPay mobile payment system in its network. Payment services from GeoPay are accessible for subscribers over the USSD menu or a web application. Payments for services from GeoPay partners over handsets supporting GSM are accessible over the GeoPay system. GeoPay started its activities in Kyrgyzstan in 2011.

Tele2 Kazakhstan Connects To National Traffic Exchange

Tele2 Kazakhstan is now connected to Kazakhstan Traffic Exchange. The connection will enable the operator to optimize equipment loading, and raise download capacity to Kazakhstan internet resources for its subscribers. The Kazakhstan Traffic Exchange was launched last year in Almaty; it enables Kazakshtan ISPs to exchange internet traffic without using international internet links.

O! Expands Roaming Network to 240 Operators

Kyrgyzstan mobile operator O! has announced that its mobile roaming services have been expanded to the networks of 240 mobile operators in 120 countries worldwide. The operator’s Roaming Light services have now become accessible on 25 networks located in 28 countries. The Roaming Light service is available to O! prepaid subscribers. There is no subscription charge and the cost of calls and SMS are deducted automatically until the user’s balance reaches zero.

Mobile operator Kar-Tel, working under the Beeline Kazakhstan brand, has appointed Alexander Komarov the CCO of the company. Komarov started work 15 July. He has worked in management at AdellSaatchi&Saatchi (Video International Kiev), Young&Rubicam, Advertising Group Video International Kiev and GroupM Ukraine.

Afghan operators ink deal to roll out 240 more base stations

Afghanistan’s ICT ministry has signed a contract for the seventh telecom rollout project that aims to bring services to areas not currently covered. The ministry signed a contract with Afghan Telecom, Afghan Wireless (AWCC), and Roshan to rollout 240 base stations in 173 districts in 34 provinces across Afghanistan. The base stations will be installed within eighteen months.

Tele2 Kazakhstan Boosts Network at 300 Sites in H1

Tele2 Kazakhstan announced that it significantly expanded its network and raised its capacity across the country in the period January-June. Works were carried out in over 300 agglomerations across the country, including major cities, regional and municipal centers, as well as villages. New GSM 1800 base stations were deployed in densely populated locations in order to raise the service quality there.

Etisalat Confirms its Interest in Warid Buyout

Etisalat has confirmed that PTCL, group’s Pakistani arm, is interested in Warid telecom of Pakistan. There were long running rumors about PTCL interested in buying Warid Telecom of Pakistan, which was confirmed by Etisalat in a statement shared with media. Trade Arabia, a paper based out of Bahrain, reported that Etisalat has confirmed that its affiliate Pakistan Telecommunication Co (PTCL) had expressed interest in mobile operator Warid Telecom. Media reports from last month had suggested that PTCL is in aggressive talks with Warid Telecom for a likely buyout that could value around USD 1 billion. Later it was unveiled that Etisalat hired Goldman Sachs to take advise on the acquisition.

Qualcomm Revenues and Profits Up by a Third

Qualcomm has announced that its third fiscal quarter revenues rose by more than a third to US$6.24 billion, boosted by increased smartphone chip shipments. Net profit was also up, by 31% to US$1.58 billion. R&D expenses increased 36 percent primarily due to an increase in costs to develop CDMA-based 3G, OFDMA-based LTE and other technologies for integrated circuit and related software products. MSM chip shipments were up by 22 percent at 172 million units. March quarter total reported device sales: approximately US$56.5 billion, up 18 percent y-o-y and down 8 percent sequentially. March quarter estimated 3G/4G device shipments: approximately 244 to 248 million units, at an estimated average selling price of approximately $227 to $233 per unit. Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities totaled $30.4 billion at the end of the third quarter of fiscal 2013, compared to $26.5 billion a year ago.

Sky Mobile sells new white-label smartphone

Mobile operator Sky Mobile, working under the Beeline Kyrgyzstan brand, has started selling the new Beeline Y300 white-label smartphone in its retail outlets. The Android 4.1 device comes with a dual-core 1 GHz processor and internal memory of 4 GB. The price of the smartphone is KGS 8,890.

Kar-Tel expands network in remote locations

Mobile operator Kar-Tel, working under the Beeline Kazakhstan brand, has started providing mobile services along the road and railway connecting Kandyagash and Emba. It was the first mobile operator to start services in the cities of Izimbet and Taldysay in the Aktobe region. Services were also launched in the Zhurun municipality. The operator is currently deploying 3G in the Mulgalzhar municipality.

MNP to Launch Next Month in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan’s three mobile network operators – Azercell, Bakcell and Azerfon – have received instruction from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) to introduce mobile number portability (MNP) on 1 August. Subscribers will be able to port their number once in a three-month period, with the process to be free of charge for consumers. The introduction of MNP has encountered a number of delays in Azerbaijan. In January 2010 communications minister Ali Abbasov said that MNP documents had been drawn up and submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers, but the country’s mobile operators had not agreed to implement the service.

Afghanistan’s Roshan Offers Mobile Money Payments in Herat

Afghanistan’s Roshan has announced an exclusive partnership with Herat Cable Network (HCN) that will enable Roshan customers in that city to pay their cable bills through its M-Paisa mobile money service. This first-of-its kind bill payment service was piloted in Herat earlier in the year, and is now being rolled out commercially to all of HCN’s customers. Currently, when factoring in travel time and lining up at HCN’s centralized cable office; it can take a customer up to two hours to pay their cable bill. With mobile payments, this can now be done remotely.

Vivacell’s Q1 Profit Totals AMD 3.67 Bln

VivaCell-MTS has reported a first quarter profit of AMD 3.67 billion while revenues totaled AMD 17.74 billion. Voice services generated AMD 10.07 billion in revenues, VAS revenues were AMD 720.69 million, and data transmission revenues totaled AMD 1.59 billion. Vivacell reported an OIBDA of AMD 8.95 billion. Capex totaled AMD 469.20 billion for the first quarter. The operator ended the quarter with 2.01 million subscribers, which includes 1.66 million prepaid customers and 347,288 postpaid subscribers. VivaCell also had 91,331 mobile broadband customers (other than by phone). ARPU stood at AMD 2,890.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Processors Power World’s First LTE-Advanced Smartphone

Qualcomm Technologies is enabling the world’s first LTE-Advanced smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. The new Galaxy S4 LTE-A will be launched on all three mobile operators’ LTE networks in Korea, starting with SK Telecom, followed by KT and LGU+. The new Galaxy S4 LTE-A will be the first smartphone to utilize LTE carrier aggregation for data rates up to 150 Mbps – double what current LTE speeds offer. Snapdragon 800 processors feature an integrated multimode 3G/4G LTE modem and are designed to support LTE carrier aggregation without sacrificing battery life.

Belgium Outlines 4G Spectrum Auction Details

BIPT has published details of its forthcoming 4G license auction for spectrum in the 800 MHz bands. A total of three licenses are available, each consisting of 2x10MHz of spectrum, available for a 20 year term. A reserve price of EUR120 million (US$156 million) has been set for each license. The incumbents will be required to reach 98% population coverage with 4G services within six years, whereas a new entrant would be given nine years to achieve that. Any of the incumbent operators that win a license will be required to offer national roaming to any new entrant that wins a license. The regulator will also make a block of unsold 2.6 GHz spectrum available to any bidder winning an 800 MHz spectrum licensee who lacks spectrum in the 2.6 GHz band.

Vodafone Uses Femtocells to Boost Rural 3G Coverage

UK based Vodafone has expanded its ‘community-led network’ initiative, and is deploying femtocells in Pendine, a coastal village in South Wales to provide 3G coverage throughout the community, where before there was little or none. The ‘open femto’ technology provides a Vodafone 3G signal in areas which traditional mobile coverage has been unable to reach. The units, about the size of a small carry on suitcase, use existing broadband services to deliver a 3G mobile signal. They have been placed in a number of locations across the village to give a good spread of coverage, including the Post Office and a restaurant.

China Mobile Installs a LTE Base Station on Mount Everest

China Mobile has deployed an LTE base station atop Mount Everest, 5,200 meters above sea level. The base station was supplied by Huawei. At a ceremony marking the launch of the service, China Mobile demonstrated a series of new 4G technologies to more than 200 guests including live HD video streaming from a Mount Everest base camp to the event venue. Huawei has already delivered 4G solutions to other parts of the region including EPC, integrated equipment rooms, BTS, microwave transmission and 4G devices.

EMT Achieves 95% Territory Coverage with 4G Network

TeliaSonera’s Estonia subsidiary Eesti Mobiiltelefon (EMT) has expanded its 4G network to cover around 95% of the country’s territory. On the back of acquiring spectrum in the 800MHz band via a beauty contest conducted by the Estonian Technical Surveillance Authority (ETSA) in May 2013, EMT outlined plans to use the frequencies to boost its 4G population coverage level to 95% by mid-June 2013. This target date was some six months ahead of its initial schedule, with the operator having previously said in March 2013 that it intended to achieve the aforementioned coverage level by the end of the year.

China Mobile Planning to Offer More TD-LTE Based Smartphones

China Mobile plans to offer at least 11 new TD-LTE based mobile phones in the second half of this year as it ramps up its network expansion. The announcement was made by China Mobile’s Chairman, Xi Guohua at a trade conference where a large number of handsets were shown off that are compatible with the company’s 4G network. Xi added that with more global chip manufacturers’ participation, the TD-LTE multi-mode multi-band smartphone technology will mature, and eventually lead to convergence with the more widespread FDD based LTE services.

Auction for Sale of Uzdunrobita’s Property Cancelled

Auction on sales of property of FE LLC Uzdunrobita, a subsidiary of MTS (Russia), was cancelled. The auction was cancelled due to lack of applications. The assets of Uzdunrobita in complex with starting price of 600 billion soums (over US$288.241 million) will be realized at auction sales in line with the decision of the protocol of the session of the creditors committee of Uzdunrobita No. 2 from 31 May 2013.

Verizon Wireless Completes 4G Rollout in Florida

Verizon Wireless says that it has now substantially completed the roll-out of its LTE network across Florida. Verizon launched LTE in Florida’s major markets in December of 2010, with an objective of matching its 3G network footprint statewide by the end of 2013. The target has been achieved six months ahead of schedule. In 2012, Verizon spent more than $240 million on network enhancements across the state.

Telekom Malaysia Issues LTE Supply Tender

Telekom Malaysia has issued a tender document to infrastructure vendors seeking an LTE network deployment. TM had invited a number of major LTE vendors, including Huawei, Ericsson, Samsung and Alcatel-Lucent, to submit their tenders. Whether the omission of Nokia Siemens Networks from the named companies was an oversight by the source, or the company has been excluded from bidding is not clear. Responses are required by the middle of September with deployments expected to start next February with nationwide coverage within four years.

Cyprus Publishes Tender Documents for Bands Auction

The Republic of Cyprus’s Department of Electronic Communications has published the tender documents for the auction for a third mobile communication network license using the 900MHz/1800MHz/2100MHz frequency bands. The MCW has indicated that the 900MHz and 1800MHz frequencies are best suited for 2G GSM, 3G UMTS, 4GLTE and WiMAX use. However, the regulator may allow the establishment and operation of communications networks not listed in the document. The operators are required to establish and operate 3G and/or 4G networks covering 40% of the Republic’s territory within three years from the date of license authorizations, and must reach 65% territorial coverage within five years from the date of their license. By 2019, the network should have downlink transmission speeds of at least 30Mbps.

Telecom Italia Ends Mobile Merger Talks with Hutchison Whampoa

Merger talks between Italy’s Telecom Italia and the local arm of Hutchison Whampoa have broken down. The two companies had started sporadic talks about a merger of their mobile networks back in April, but it had been recently suggested that Hutchison Whampoa was getting impatient with Telecom Italia, which has been distracted by its landline spin-off efforts.

Critical Security Flaw Discovered in Android Smartphones

A so-called “master key” for Android smartphones has been discovered by a security firm which is warning that it could give almost unfettered access to any Android phone, regardless of its security settings. The loophole, discovered by BlueBox has been used in every Android OS since at least version 1.6. The vulnerability allows a hacker to modify APK code without breaking an application’s cryptographic signature, and to turn any legitimate application into a malicious Trojan, completely unnoticed by the app store, the phone, or the end user. Technical details of how to exploit the security flaw will be revealed at the Black Hat USA 2013 conference at the end of this month.

MTS Taps NSN for FDD LTE Deployment

MTS has hired Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) to roll out its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) in Moscow and the Central Federal District. Under the terms of three-year agreement, NSN will supply equipment for the deployment of a frequency division duplex (FDD) LTE network, also taking charge of network implementation, planning, optimization and systems integration. MTS plans to cover 80% of the Moscow territory and over 40 large cities in the surrounding region with FDD LTE networks. The company plans to cover approximately 600 population centers in Russia by the end of 2013.

LTE Joint Rollout Inked By Celcom, Puncak Semangat

Celcom Axiata has revealed that it will roll out 4G infrastructure jointly with new licensee Puncak Semangat. Celcom will work with Puncak Semangat subsidiary Altel Communications, with the two companies pooling their respective 2×10MHz blocks of spectrum in the 2600MHz band to construct a network utilizing LTE technology. As per the terms of the agreement between the companies, Celcom will serve as the exclusive infrastructure and wholesale provider for Altel, which will offer services as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). Meanwhile, the deal also covers the terms and conditions relating to domestic roaming services and RAN sharing arrangements between both parties, which are said to be subject to further negotiations and eventual execution.

Omantel Confirms That 4G Rollout Is Progressing As Planned

Omantel, has revealed that its Long Term Evolution (LTE) 4G mobile network now covers 37 wilayats or provinces across eleven governorates, and most of the capital, Muscat, via 400 active LTE base stations. Its 4G LTE network is now covering areas in the governorates of Muscat, South and North Batinah, Dhofar, Musandam, Buraimi, Dhahirah, Dakilyiah, South and North Sharqiyah, and Wusta. Many areas of the country’s second city Salalah have also been covered in preparation for the annual Khareef festival in August.

Digi Switches On LTE in Select Locations in Klang Valley

DiGi Telecommunications has introduced commercial LTE services in ‘selected high traffic locations in the Klang Valley’, with coverage zones being: Plaza Low Yat, 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Kota Damansara, Subang Indah Villa, Sunway Mentari, Bukit Bintang, KDU neighbourhood and Cheras Pandan Indah. Meanwhile, plans are said to be underway to increase LTE coverage in these zones, while expansion to other ‘market centers’ across the country is also envisaged. At launch, however, DiGi has confirmed that while both new and existing customers will be able to access the increased speeds offered, LTE will only be offered via USB dongle or tablet. Looking ahead though, the cellco has said that in ‘the next implementation stage’ it aims to offer LTE on small screens with a suite of LTE-ready handsets.

4G Rollout Ahead of Schedule, Brazil’s Claro

Telecom Americas (Claro) that its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) rollout programme is currently running well ahead of schedule, allowing it to meet the government’s deadline to launch commercial 4G services in the remaining football 2014 World Cup host cities of Cuiaba, Manaus and Natal. As a result of rapid rollout Claro hopes to be the first carrier in Brazil to make 4G mobile services available in all twelve host cities, namely: Manaus, Natal, Cuiaba, Curitiba, Sao Paulo, Porto Alegre, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Fortaleza, Recife and Salvador. In addition to the above, Claro’s LTE network is also available in Sao Paulo, Curitiba, Porto Alegre and in the tourist cities of Campos do Jordao, Bazios and Paraty.

Telstra to Roll out Lumia 925 Smartphone on 30 July

Telstra will roll out Nokia Lumia 925 smartphone in Australian starting 30 July. The Nokia Lumia 925 features Gorilla Glass coated AMOLED display and Windows Phone 8 platform. The handset supports Microsoft Exchange accounts and comes preloaded with a Microsoft Office Mobile suite including Word Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile, Excel Mobile and OneNote Mobile. The Lumia 925 handset will be available at Telstra stores.

Orange Inaugurates 4G Network in Six Cities

Orange Espana has launched commercial 4G services in the cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Malaga and Murcia. In confirming that its LTE-based services were now live, Orange Espana noted that it has invested around EUR70 million (USD89.9 million) for the modernization of its network in Madrid alone. As a result of such investment, the cellco has said that at launch its 4G infrastructure covers around 80% of the population of Madrid within the perimeter of the M40motorway, or around three million people.

Optus Boosts 3G/4G Coverage in Adelaide

Optus has reportedly completed a major expansion of its 3G and 4G networks in Adelaide, having deployed 25 new LTE-enabled sites, while a further 150 upgraded 3G sites have also been constructed. A number of new areas can now access the cellco’s 4G products. Meanwhile, Optus plans to add another 100 new mobile sites in Adelaide and its surrounding areas with a view to boosting 3G/4G coverage further over the next two years. Upgrades will be carried out at more than 100 existing base stations.

Econet to Roll Out 4G LTE in Victoria Falls

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has announced plans to roll out Long Term Evolution (LTE) services in the tourist town of Victoria Falls, ahead of the United Nations (UN) World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) General Assembly in Victoria Falls and Livingstone, which is set for 24-29 August 2013. Econet’s 4G services will go live in the town in time for the conference in order to provide visiting delegates with high speed broadband connectivity during their stay. If deployed, Econet’s LTE network in Victoria Falls will present the first commercially available 4G network in Zimbabwe.

Vodafone Opens Australian LTE Network to New Customers

Vodafone Australia has opened up its LTE network to new customers, less than a month after it started accepting migrations from its existing customer base. Network’s 20MHz wide-band spectrum holdings meant Vodafone was able to offer its customers some of the fastest speeds available across mainland Australia. The network currently covers Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, as well as major regional centres of Wollongong, Gold Coast and Newcastle.

SK Telecom’s LTE-A Hits 150,000 Subs In Two Weeks

SK Telecom has announced that it has attracted more than 150,000 customers to its Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) network, just 14 days after it was launched. The high speed 4G service is now available in Seoul and 43 other major cities, which means one new market has been added since the launch on 26 June. Looking ahead, the operator has said it expects the network footprint to be expanded to a total of 84 cities across the country, although it has not laid out a specific timetable for this, only saying it will happen ‘gradually’. Meanwhile, rival operator LG U plus has announced that it plans to introduce its own LTE-A service later this month.

T-Mobile Surges past LTE Target with 116 Metropolitan Areas Covered

T-Mobile US has announced that its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network now reaches 157 million people across the United States, far exceeding the company’s previously stated mid-year goal of covering 100 million people. The network is live in 116 metropolitan areas, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Dallas, Seattle, Atlanta and Miami. Going forward, the company seeks to deliver LTE coverage to 200 million people in more than 200 markets by the end of 2013.

Telenor Distances Itself from Luel’s Statements

Telenor Pakistan has distanced itself from earlier statements that the company would reconsider investing in 3G in Pakistan due to the government’s tightening regulations and increased taxes. Tore Johnsen, former CEO of Telenor Pakistan and currently the senior VP of Telenor Group, met with ICT minister Anusha Rahman. Johnsen disavowed the statements made earlier by Lars Christian Luel, the local company’s chief executive. Furthermore, Johnsen appreciated the steps the government had taken to create a business-friendly environment in Pakistan.

TIM Brasil Launches 4G in Sao Paulo

TIM Brasil has launched 4G services in 79 districts of the state capital Sao Paolo, five months before Anatel’s 31 December 2013 deadline. The cellco said that its Long Term Evolution (LTE) services are now available to its customers in these regions, who can take advantage of a five-fold increase in internet access speeds for no extra charge. TIM Brasil post-paid users need only to buy an LTE-enabled device and 4G chip to access the new service. A range of modems and smartphones are available including the Motorola RAZR HD, the LG Optimus G, Samsung Galaxy Express, LG Optimus FS, Z10BlackBerry and Samsung Galaxy S4. For 4G smartphone users, TIM Brasil offers the Liberty Web 600MB tariff plan with 600MB data allowance and a monthly fee of BRL34.90 (USD15.40).

Olive Telecom Produces First Party of Mobile Phones and Tablets

An Uzbek-Indian joint venture Olive Telecom produced the first party of mobile handsets and tablet computers. Currently, the enterprise produced 1,000 units of fixed telephones, 1,000 units of tablet computers and 13,000 mobile phones. The first part of products will be delivered to UzMobile, a mobile operator of Uzbektelecom. Olive Telecom JV specializes in manufacturing of telecommunication equipment, including mobile and fixed terminals, and tablet PCs. Currently, the joint venture produces mobile and fixed phones for CDMA-networks, tablet computers and USB-modems.

AT&T’s $1.2 Billion Leap into the PrePay Market

AT&T has announced its intention to buy the smaller regional operator, Leap Wireless in a move that AT&T said will jump-start its expansion into the prepay market. Under the terms of the agreement, AT&T said that it will acquire all of Leap’s stock and wireless properties, including licenses, network assets, retail stores and approximately 5 million subscribers. AT&T is offering US$1.2 billion for the company. AT&T has offered to pay US$15 per share, compared to the market price US$7.98 per share just before the deal was announced. The transaction is subject to review by the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice and to other customary closing conditions. AT&T expects the transaction to close in six to nine months.

China Looking to Speed up 4G Licensing

The Chinese government has revealed plans to speed up the 4G mobile license allocation process, with concessions now due to be awarded by the end of this year. An executive meeting of the State Council also discussed plans to accelerate fixed broadband deployments, plus moves which would encourage operators to upgrade the coverage and quality of their 3G wireless networks. The country’s leading cellular operator by subscribers, China Mobile, has already begun rolling out 4G networks based on TDD-LTE, or TD-LTE technology, but there has been speculation that rival operators China Unicom and China Telecom could also adopt the FDD LTE standard which is more popular in other markets worldwide.

Omnitel Triples 3G Seaside Coverage

Omnitel, has tripled coverage of its third-generation (3G) network in coastal areas, including Sventoji, Kretinga, Nida, Juodkranteje, Giruliai and Priekuleje. In addition, the TeliaSonera-owned company said it has improved 3G network coverage and quality in and around the capital Vilnius, including Kernave, Maisiagala, Nemencine, Sumskas and Medininkai. Omnitel’s 3G services are now available in around 400 towns and cities across the country, while its 4G LTE network covers Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda, Siauliai and Panevezys.

O2 to Demo Volte from Q1 2014

Telefonica Germany has long-term plans to expand its LTE services nationwide. The Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) is expected to be demonstrated by the operator, which offers services under the brand O2, in the first quarter of 2014, though the company currently has no plans to introduce LTE roaming abroad or a pre-paid option. Telefonica Germany expanded its 4G network to the cities of Hamburg, Duisburg and Essen on 2 July, following earlier launches in Munich, Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne, Nuremberg, Leipzig and Dusseldorf.

Orange Launches 4G LTE in Cahul

Orange Moldova has expanded its Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to include the town of Cahul in southern Moldova, the third urban area to benefit from 4G wireless services. According to a press release, Cahul’s residential and business population comprising of 39,400 inhabitants, will have access to theoretical mobile download speeds of up to 100Mbps.

Internode Unveils 4G NodeMobile Tariffs

Internode has announced the launch of 4G plans for its ‘NodeMobile’ service. Prices for the new service start at AUD15 (USD13.8) per month for a plan offering a 200MB monthly usage allowance, while the top-end option costs AUD60 per month for a 3GB data cap, as well as unlimited calls and texts. With Internode using the mobile network of Optus to offer the service, the development comes after upgrade work had been carried out by the latter.

Ucell’s Net Sales Exceeds US$225m In 1H 2013

Net sales of mobile communication operator Ucell grew by 58.5% year-on-year to 1.484 billion Sweden kronor (over US$225 million) in the first half of 2013. At the same time net sales of Ucell made up 783 million Sweden kronor (about US$118.71 million) in the second quarter of 2013, which rose by 65.2% year-on-year. EBITDA grew from 155 million Sweden kronor (US$23.488 million) in the second quarter of 2012 to 438 million Sweden kronor (US$66.37 million) in the same period of 2013. EBITDA margin reached 55.9% in April-June 2013 (32.7% in 2Q 2012). TeliaSonera said that the subscribers’ base of Ucell made up 8.178 million people at the end of the second quarter of 2013 against 7.767 million people in April-June 2012. The growth rate made up 5.29%.

G Branding for All Future LG’s Premium Phones

LG has dropped a minuscule hint about its forthcoming flagship and confirmed that it will be called the G2. It will also be the first smartphone from LG to be launched as part of the company’s new “G” premium brand. Future smartphones in the same series will carry only the G name while the branding of mobile devices that have already been introduced will continue unchanged. LG’s 4:3 display smartphones will be rebranded as simply “Vu:” going forward.

Tele2 Lowers FY Sales Guidance for Kazakhstan

Tele2 has lowered the outlook for revenues from its Kazakhstan activities this year, to SEK 1.45-1.55 billion from SEK 1.70-1.80 billion previously, amid a slowdown in customer growth. The Kazakh operator added a net 309,000 new customers in the second quarter, better than Q1 but still less than half the year-earlier total. The total customer base numbered 3.162 million at the end of June. During the quarter, 811,000 customers were deemed no longer active, after the operator stopped counting customers only receiving incoming calls. Sales rose to SEK 333 million from SEK 228 million a year earlier. EBITDA loss narrowed to SEK 52 million from SEK 105 million a year ago. Capex doubled compared to Q1 to SEK 184 million. Tele2 Kazakhstan’s goal for 2013 is to have a geographic coverage comparable to that of its competitors. Total cash capex this year is estimated at SEK 550-650 million.

T-Mobile Launches LTE in Puerto Rico

T-Mobile Puerto Rico has announced the commercial launch of its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband network, which it claims to cover more than two million Puerto Ricans – or over half of the island’s population. At launch the cellco said the new 4G network covers San Juan, Bayamon, Caguas, Carolina, Ponce, Mayaguez, Guaynabo, Catano and Trujillo Alto. T-Mobile expanded its network coverage with 23 new cell sites in densely populated municipalities on the island to increase capacity for better quality user connections.

HTC Shows Off Mini Version of Flagship Smartphone

HTC has shown off the long expected smaller version of its One flagship smartphone. The HTC One mini combines a 4.3″ display with a Qualcomm dual-core 1.4 GHz processor. It also runs the “latest version” of Android with HTC Sense overlay. A camera is included, described as “ultra pixel”, although quite how ultra the pixel count will be was not revealed. The HTC One mini will be available in select markets from August and rolled out globally from September. The statement from the company did not include any pricing information.

Verizon 2Q13 Revenues Up 4.4%; 6.4m LTE Devices Activated In Three Months

Verizon Communications has reported revenues of USD29.8 billion for the three months ended 30 June 2013, an increase of 4.4% year-on-year. Consolidated operating income for Q2 was USD6.6 billion, up from USD5.7 billion on an annualized basis. Consolidated EBITDA totaled USD10.7 billion in the April-June period, compared to USD9.8 billion one year earlier. CAPEX for the first half of 2013 has been stated at USD7.6 billion, with a FY13 figure of USD16.4 billion to USD16.6 billion projected by the company. In operational terms, mobile unit Verizon Wireless saw its retail subscriber base grow 6.3% y-o-y to 100.1 million, including 94.3 million post-paid customers.

Yoigo Inaugurates LTE Network in Madrid

Yoigo has launched commercial 4G services in line with its earlier announced plans. Yoigo set out its stall to be the first Spanish cellco to introduce LTE technology commercially. As per Yoigo’s original plans its LTE services are understood to be initially available in Madrid only, although the cellco is now said to be aiming to extend its network footprint to 48% of the population by the end of this year, up from the original goal of 37%; by the end of this year it hopes to offer 4G services to more than 22.5 million people in 100 cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants.

Idaho-based Syringa Wireless has selected Swedish telecoms vendor Ericsson to roll out its planned 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in southern and eastern Idaho. Syringa noted that the deployment is already underway, and is expected to be available on a commercial basis from October this year.

Banglalink Appoints Huawei to Build 3G Network

Banglalink, the second largest mobile operator in Bangladesh, has planned to invest more than US$300m by 2015 to develop its network, especially for 3G. Not only for facilitation of the 3G mobile services, they would also work on modernizing existing network, power savings and protecting environment to give users a better service through this process, the meeting was told. Huawei will work as the network developer of the operator to provide backbone facility to Banglalink for rolling out 3G mobile phone service across the country.

3G set to arrive in Algeria in ‘late November’

Algeria’s Minister of Posts, IT and Communications, has confirmed that 3G services will be introduced to the country in November 2013, with the regulator Autorite de Regulation de la Poste et des Telecoms (ARPT) scheduled to launch an auction of 3G/3G+ licences on 1 August, local news agency La Liberte reports. The Algerian government postponed the long-awaited tender in order to complete the acquisition of local mobile operator Djezzy. According to La Liberte, the Algerian government has instead found a way to bypass current legislation, which prohibits companies from participating in licence auctions if they are currently undergoing a change in their ownership.

Nokia Siemens Networks Wins Saudi Network Expansion Contract

Nokia Siemens Networks has won an 18-month network upgrade contract worth US$325 million from Saudi Arabia’s Mobily (Etihad Etisalat). Under terms of the agreement, Nokia Siemens Networks will facilitate a long term export credit with Finnvera, Finnish Export Credit (FEC), and lenders Credit Agricole and Deutsche Bank.

Huawei Welcomes More European Vendors in China Mobile’s Huge LTE Tender

Huawei has appreciated the European participation in participation in China Mobile’s massive 207,000 LTE base stations tender and hopes that more vendors supporting China Mobile’s TD based LTE network will be good for the whole TD-LTE system, and could see it deployed in more countries where FDD based LTE is more commonplace. It would then help Huawei compete in other markets as it would have a strong TD-LTE base to build upon. Australia’s Optus would also be a beneficiary, as they have started deploying dual-format LTE networks in parts of the country.

Nokia may buy Siemens’ 50% stake in Nokia Siemens Networks for $2.6 billion

Nokia will buy Siemens AG’s 50 percent stake in Nokia Siemens Networks, its telecom equipment joint venture, for $2.6 billion. Nokia will use a bridge loan to help finance the purchase. The deal will end speculation that the phone major would seek to exit from the loss making Nokia Siemens Networks.

ZTE Opens Mobile Production Plant in Uzbekistan

China’s ZTE Corporation opened a plant on production of mobile handsets and their accessories in Syrdarya region of Uzbekistan. Mobile phones will be realized under UZTE brand. The cost of the project is US$3.16 million. The project initiators are ZTE Limited and Peng Sheng LLC. They created joint venture Pengzhong Xingsheng on a parity basis to implement the project. The capacity of the plant is 100,000 applications a year. It is expected that 10% of product will be imported and the localization level will make up 30%. The line of smartphones consists of three models GRAND-Х, GRAND-V and GRAND-M, which have good characteristics and affordable price.

Nokia Unveils Its Cheapest 3G-Enabled Series 40 Feature Phones

Nokia unveiled two new feature phones, the 207 and 208, to support its ever-growing range of low-end handsets aimed at consumers in emerging markets. The handsets have 2.4-inch QVGA display, 1020 mAh battery with 64BM of RAM, 256 MB of internal storage, expandable to up to 32GB through a micro SD card slot. Nokia 208 is equipped with a 1.3-megapixel rear-facing camera, while the Nokia 207 is sold without. The handsets have support mobile Internet speeds of up to 3.5G, dual SIM variant and available in red, cyan, yellow, and white and black .The sale will start in the third quarter of 2013. Both will be sold for $68 (52 euros).

LG Display Introduces World’s Slimmest Full HD LCD Panel for Smartphones

LG Display has shown off what it says is the world’s slimmest Full HD LCD panel for smartphones. At just 2.2mm thin with a 2.3mm bezel, LG Display’s new panel is both slimmest and narrowest among existing Full HD LCD panels designed for mobile devices. By utilizing 1,080X1, 920 pixels consisting of Red, Green, Blue (RGB) sub-pixels, and the panel is a true Full HD display, and with a brightness of 535 units at maximum, LG Display’s panel outperforms all current mobile Full HD LCD panels. LG Uplus Introduces LTE-A Commercial Services

Following in the footsteps of South Korea’s largest wireless network operator by subscribers SK Telecom (SKT), the nation’s smallest operator LG Uplus has announced that it has inaugurated its LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network. At launch LTE-A services are on offer in the capital Seoul, as well as a number of other unnamed ‘major’ cities; looking ahead, coverage is expected to be expanded during the third quarter of 2013, though no specific targets were mentioned. It is understood that LG Uplus’ LTE-A service is based on carrier aggregation technology, which bundles two frequency bands to increase bandwidth.

Nokia Siemens Networks Wins Iraqi Network Expansion Contract

Korek Telecom has awarded a network expansion contract to Nokia Siemens Networks covering the south of the country. The operator has also renewed its care and managed services contract with the company. Neither financial terms, not the scale or timeline for the contract were disclosed. Korek started operating in Iraq in 2000, notably in the north of Iraq and was awarded a nationwide license in 2007.

Ericsson enters agreement to acquire Telcocell

Ericsson has announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire the entire business of Telcocell, a Canada-based consulting and systems integration company specializing in Business Support Services (BSS), as well as its subsidiary. Approximately 200 services employees and consultants based in Canada and the United States are expected to join Ericsson. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of the third quarter of 2013, subject to customary closing conditions. Ericsson will benefit from Telcocell’s consulting and systems integration experience in a converged charging, custom development, quality assurance and production support for BSS.

Huawei Wins $300 Million Network Upgrade Contract

Huawei has won a US$300 million network upgrade contract from Bangladesh’s Banglalink. The upgrade includes modernization of the mobile network, reframing the frequency band, enhancing capacity and providing 3G compatible infrastructure and services. The company does not have a 3G license, but the government is planning to hold its long-delayed auction in September. Banglalink is the country’s second largest mobile network after Grameenphone, and has a customer base of around 25 million. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Orascom Telecom.

Ericsson has announced that it will move its Head of Business Unit Support Solutions, Per Borgklint to the USA’s Silicon Valley. In past years Ericsson has built a significant base in Silicon Valley with special focus on Internet Protocol (IP) development for its Smart Services Router (SSR) as well as a part of its technology group driving Cloud and software defined networking (SDN) strategy. Once finalized, the acquisition of Mediaroom, will also add significantly to Ericsson’s presence in Silicon Valley.
