Vivo Brazil has reached its goal of 3G coverage of 85% of the population. Teletalk Bangladesh has launched experimental 3G services in Dhaka City on 29 July. After a month of testing, the company will then officially launch 3G services in September. ¬ZTE has won a contract worth US$281.5 million for the largest share in China Telecom’s 2012 CDMA Purchase Project. During the project, ZTE will provide its Uni-Ran solution and relevant services in over 220 cities of 27 provinces across China. ¬Huawei has signed an agreement with the Brazilian government to develop LTE based hardware that can expand coverage in rural areas by using the 450 MHz spectrum.

CDMA Uzbekistan offers promotion to VIP clients in regions

Mobile operator CDMA Uzbekistan, working under the Perfectum Mobile brand, has launched a promotion for subscribers connecting to its VIP tariff across the country, save the Tashkent region. Depending on the tariff chosen, customers can get a 10 to 25 percent discount on the monthly subscription rate, and they can obtain a premium number costing USD 10 to USD 50 at half price.

Pakistan 3G license bid process to be Expedited

Pakistan government has decided to hire a consultant to expedite the auction process of 3G license. A meeting chaired by Prime Minister Raja Parvez Ashraf asked the Ministry of Information Technology to immediately advertise for a consultant to speed up the mechanism which was facing delays due to ‘unnecessary official procedures’. The meeting directed Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to seek a list of experts from Ministry of Information Technology to evaluate Expression of Interest (EOI) from the consultant. The meeting reiterated the PTA’s role in carrying out the auction of 3G license in a transparent manner. Earlier, the Prime Minister was briefed by the officials of IT ministry on the subject. The meeting was attended by Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Qamar Zaman Kaira; Minister for Finance, Dr. Abdul Hafeez Sheikh; Minister for Water and Power, Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar and other high official from MoITT & PTA.

Bakcell gears up for MNP with PT solution

Azeri mobile operator Bakcell has chosen to deploy PT’s SEGway Number Portability Solution for its network in Baku, in line with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology’s (MCIT’s) requirement for service providers to make mobile number portability (MNP) available to subscribers this year. SEGway’s carrier-grade IP backbone provides a platform for seamless growth and the addition of revenue-generating features as networks evolve to next generation.

Majority stake in Kyrgyz Mobile Company up for sale

Kyrgyzstan’s State Property Fund has invited applications from parties interested in participating in an auction for a 75% stake in state-owned Kyrgyz Mobile Company. The start-up cellco owns a licence for the provision of GSM and W-CDMA mobile services in the country. The auction is scheduled to take place on 21 August 2012, with a starting bid price of KGS152.5 million (USD3.2 million). The National Communications Agency in mid-2011 allocated GSM and UMTS frequencies to a newly established, wholly state-owned wireless operator, Kyrgyz Mobile Company. In February 2012 the government proposed a list of companies to be privatized between2012-14, which included the sale of a 75% stake in Kyrgyz Mobile Company.

Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan to coordinate on spectrum use

Kyrgyz government has approved a draft agreement on radio frequency interference with neighboring Kazakhstan. Going forward, both nations plan to coordinate their actions across the 30MHz-2000MHz spectrum bands in border regions. Landlocked and mountainous, Kyrgyzstan is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the east.

Qualcomm Reports 17% Rise in Profits Boosted by One-Off Gains

Qualcomm has reported that its third fiscal-quarter revenues rose by 28% compared to last year, reaching US$4.63 billion. Net profit also rose, by 17% to US$1.21 billion. The profits were boosted by US$761 million, net of income taxes, for discontinued operations, as a result of a $1.2 billion gain associated with the sale of substantially entire 700 MHz spectrum. The company shipped 141 million MSM chips during the quarter a rise of 18 percent year on year. The company ended the quarter on June 24, 2012 with $26.5 billion in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities. The company’s tax rate for the quarter was 24% due to lower overseas sales, although the expected annual tax rate will be around 20 percent.

Qualcomm, OTVentures tie up for MENA mobile apps, content

Qualcomm and Orascom Telecom, Media & Technology (OTMT) affiliate OTVentures plan to collaborate on projects to produce mobile content and applications across the MENA region, with a particular focus on Egypt. The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on developing Egypt’s mobile ecosystem by increasing the availability of value-added services, including apps and content created for local consumers. The MoU identifies key areas in which Qualcomm can provide OTVentures with technology assistance, mainly software development tools, as well as areas for potential collaboration in providing technology and services to retail consumers.

Megafon reports 3G modems as bestsellers

Russian mobile operator Megafon announced the list of bestseller devices in its shops in June. The white-label Megafon 3G E352 USB modem was at the top of the list followed by the Megafon 3G E173 USB modem, Nokia 1280 and Nokia 100 handsets and TMinifon TDS-12-1 mini handset. The handsets above, followed by the Samsung E1200 and Samsung E2232, formed the top of the handsets bestsellers list. The Samsung S5250 led in the smartphones list, followed by the Nokia C5 5Mp, Nokia 5228, Samsung S5830 and Samsung S5380.

Tata Docomo launches new 3G data packs across Karnataka

Indian Tata Docomo has introduced new 3G data prepaid packs and a reduction of almost 89 percent in prices for customers in Karnataka, Bangalore. Tata Docomo’s lowest data pack now costs INR 5 that offers 50MB of data download for browsing internet. It now offers more MB on data packs, for instance on a recharge of INR 22, prepay customers will now get 150 MB of data download. From earlier charge where customers were paying INR 0.84 per MB which would now cost only INR 0.15 per MB, this essentially means 83 percent reduction. Customers can now recharge with the new INR 5 for 50 MB validity till midnight. Customers can select from three new 3G prepaid data packs. These packs start from INR 5 for 50 MB, INR 22 for 150 MB valid for three days, INR 39 for 150 MB data usage for seven days and INR 90 for 300MB data usage for 30 days. Prepay customers can opt from any of these packs of INR 255 and INR 351 that offers 1GB and 1.5GB bundled data respectively valid for 30 days.

Airtel Rwanda launches 3G network

Airtel Rwanda announced the launch of its 3G platform in the country. The improved technology will enhance multimedia functionality and high-speed mobile broadband, allowing users to make video calls, watch live TV, send and receive e-mails and download music. The HSPA+ technology will offer download speeds up to 21 Mbps and is based on equipment from Ericsson. The new 3G network will initially be available to Airtel customers in Kigali, but will become available to other parts of the country over the course of the month. Airtel will offer all its customers introductory free internet access to experience the service for the first two weeks.

Dominican Republic gets first taste of 4G

Orange Dominicana has launched the first Long Term Evolution (LTE) 4G cellular network in the Dominican Republic. The new technology is available in the capital Santo Domingo, offering peak mobile internet browsing speeds of up to 100Mbps. The firm, which is part of the France Telecom-Orange group, says it has invested more than USD150 million to expand and upgrade its network.

Telefonica launches LTE in Nuremberg, Dresden

Telefonica Germany has announced the commercial launch of its urban Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband network. Coverage of the 4G network, which supports maximum download speeds of up to 50Mbps, is initially available in Nuremberg and Dresden, but will be expanded to Munich and Leipzig shortly. By the end of the year Telefonica aims to have increased availability of it LTE network to a total of 200 towns and cities. At launch, the company is offering the HTC ONE XL and LG Optimus True HD LTE smartphones, as well as the O2 LTE 4G surfstick from ZTE and the Asus Transformer 300 tablet.

Geocell unveils HSPA+ network

Georgia Geocell has announced the upgrade of its mobile broadband network in select locations to HSPA+, enabling maximum download rates of up to 21Mbps. The faster speeds are currently available in the capital Tbilisi and Kutaisi. Geocell is offering its ‘New Generation Geocell Connect’ package which includes the ZTE MF669 USB modem – supporting theoretical down-/upload speeds of up to 21Mbps/5.76Mbps – and 3GB of data per month. The new package is available at a promotional price of GEL65 (USD39.5) until 20 July.

Movistar expanding HSPA coverage in central region

Movistar Venezuela has expanded its HSPA-based mobile broadband services in the central region of the country with the deployment of six new cell sites costing VEF7.1 million (USD1.7 million). The cellco’s CAPEX in the first quarter of 2012 represented 16% of the total investment figure, and was largely spent on 3G coverage and capacity, to meet data services demand in Venezuela that Movistar corporate communications VP, Douglas Ochoa, said expanded by 400% last year. Movistar Venezuela’s revenues reached USD831 million in Q1 2012, up 23.5% year-on-year, as data turnover climbed 33.4%; non-SMS data accounted for 51% of total data revenues during the quarter.

Qualcomm Signs More Participants for UK Wireless Charging Trials

Qualcomm has signed deals with both Renault and Delta Motorsport concerning the trials of its wireless power charging service in London. In November 2011, Qualcomm announced a WEVC trial in London to commence in 2012. The objectives of the trial are to evaluate the commercial viability of wireless EV charging and gain user feedback on the use of WEVC-enabled vehicles. “We are very excited about the prospects of working with Renault, a global leader in electric vehicles and an innovator in the growing low carbon vehicle market,” said Anthony Thomson, vice president of business development and marketing at Qualcomm. Delta Motorsport also plans to participate with Qualcomm Europe Inc. on a steering committee for the London trial and to provide support for the London Trial.

Vivo achieves 3G coverage target with four years to spare

Vivo Participacoes has reached its goal of 3G coverage of 85% of the population, well ahead of its target date of April 2016. In a statement, the cellco said it achieved the magic figure, at which date its 3G network served 2,832 municipalities out of a total of 5,566. Launched in 2010, Vivo’s ambitious rollout plan envisaged covering more than four-fifths of Brazil’s people with mobile internet access of up to 10Mbps within six years, in line with the regulator Anatel’s licensing terms although even then, it said it was confident it could reach that goal by 2012. Currently, the cellco’s coverage is in less than half of all Brazil’s municipalities and is especially weak in those with less than 30,000 inhabitants.

Tricom calls on Huawei for LTE upgrade

Dominican Tricom has revealed that it has selected Chinese vendor Huawei for a network upgrade project that will include the deployment of 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. The cellco has confirmed that Huawei has been contracted for the implementation of systems utilizing both CDMA 1x-EVDO and LTE technology, but it has not outlined a timeframe for the deployment of either. Tricom is the smallest of the Dominican Republic’s four mobile network operators, with an estimated subscriber base of 620,000 at the end of March 2012, giving it a market share of 6.4%.

SFR to deploy 3G and 4G for Parisian train users

The French cellular operator SFR has signed an agreement with the Paris transport authority RATP to deploy 3G and 4G mobile technology to cover underground and local rail networks in the French capital and the Ile de France region. SFR plans to begin offering 3G coverage for rail customers at two stations from September, with the entire Parisian underground and over ground rail system to be covered by 3G and 4G by end-2015.

4G auction due in September

The Colombian government’s planned 4G spectrum auction, previously slated for June this year, is now expected to take place on 5 September. 225MHz of spectrum is up for grabs, with the government hoping to auction between four and six new licences. At present the only operator offering 4G services is state-owned Une-EPM, which launched commercial service over its Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in June, though the trio of other operators Claro Colombia (previously known as Comcel), Movistar Colombia and Tigo Colombia are all interested in acquiring 4G spectrum. Also expected to weigh-in for the concessions are Chile’s Entel, NII Holdings, DirecTV and International Communications Network.

Antenova unveils LTE antenna reference design for handsets

Antenna maker Antenova has released a LTE Antenna Reference Design for smartphones which covers the global LTE bands. Antenova wideband and antenna design overcomes the difficulty of covering all the LTE frequency bands without the use of switches or tunable active components. The A10453 is a fixed frequency LTE antenna that covers LTE 700, GSM850, GSM900, DCS1800, PCS1900, WCDMA2100, LTE B7 (2500-2690 MHz), LTE B38 (2570-2620 MHz), and LTE B40 (2300 – 2400 MHz) bands. The A10453 LTE antenna is a low profile 6mm height internal corner mount antenna utilizing Antenova antenna technology, which covers the five mobile bands plus the LTE bands.

Teletalk to launch 3G in Dhaka

Bangladesh Teletalk has launched experimental 3G services in Dhaka City on 29 July. After a month of testing, the company will then officially launch 3G services in September. The operator will provide 3G Sim cards to existing customers first and Teletalk is considering a lottery system or basing it on usage. Following the launch in Dhaka, Teletalk will launch 3G services in Chittagong as well and other big cities by the end of 2013. The Company expects the user base to double after July from the current 1.3 million. As the state-owned operator, Teletalk was given permission to launch 3G experimentally before other operators. The operator originally planned to launch 3G services in March but had to delay the launch for technical reasons. A 3G spectrum auction is planned for September this year.

T-Mobile Starts LTE Trials in Prague

T-Mobile Czech Republic is launching an LTE speed test in Prague. The LTE network will be deployed in Prague’s Kamyk district at 12 base stations using 20 MHz bandwidth in the 2.6 GHz frequency. The hardware for the test is being supplied by Samsung. Compared to the standard LTE infrastructure, the network will be enhanced with Samsung’s Smart LTE technology, which applies advanced radio resource allocation technology to increase the capacity of each cell by as much as 30%, and to mitigate negative effects of interference between neighboring cells. The trial operation is scheduled to take place in July – September this year.

Unicom shells out USD1bn on 3G expansion

China Unicom has completed a public auction to expand its W-CDMA network by 100,000 base stations, with local heavyweights Huawei and ZTE winning a combined total of around 60% of the orders. The tender was valued at between CNY6 billion and CNY7 billion (USD950 million and USD1.108 billion). Unicom intends to improve rural and suburban coverage to around 78% from its current 39%, whilst also strengthening capacity in urban areas.

Bell Canada has introduced Motorola Atrix HD LTE superphone. Russia Awards Four LTE Licenses

Russia’s telecoms regulator, Roskomnadzor has awarded four LTE licenses, out of eight companies that applied. The three main mobile networks, Vimpelcom, MTS and MegaFon won licenses as did Rostelecom. According to a statement from Vimpelcom, it was granted spectrum in the 813.5-821/854.5-862MHz bands across the Russian territory. As a condition of the licence, Vimpelcom will start providing services no later than June 1, 2013. The rollout of the network will be using the LTE standard and its further modifications within the frequency band of 791-862, 2500-2690, 720-750 & 761-791 MHz. A further condition of the licence award is that each winner will invest at least RUR 15 billion (US$457 million) annually until its federal LTE network is built (the federal LTE network must be built within 7 years, starting from 2013).

Malaysia’s Maxis and Redtone to Share LTE Networks

Malaysian mobile network, Maxis and REDtone, a data and broadband service provider have entered into an infrastructure and spectrum sharing agreement covering the deployment of their LTE networks. Cellcom Launches HSPA+ Services in Liberia

Cellcom Liberia has launched HSPA+ coverage following an upgrade carried out by China’s ZTE. The upgraded network currently covers Monrovia and greater Monrovia as well as Buchanan in Grand Bassa County. Citing company officials, the report added that coverage will be expanded along the main axis from Monrovia to the border with Guinea. The company itself has not put out a statement confirming the launch. Indeed, their last press statement was in 2009.

Qualcomm, Microsoft joins forces on QPrize

Qualcomm and Microsoft will jointly organize the third edition of Qualcomm Ventures QPrize competition in India. This competition identifies the most promising early-stage technology companies in India. And the winner will receive US$ 150,000 funding from Qualcomm. As per the alliance, Microsoft will provide US$25,000 for the second prize winner of QPrize in India and sign up the shortlisted applicants to its BizSpark program while the finalists would be considered for BizSpark Plus program. NetOne hands Huawei USD200m contract

Zimbabwean state-owned cellco NetOne has awarded China’s Huawei Technologies a USD200 million network upgrade and expansion contract, covering the deployment of 2,000 base stations. The project will modernise NetOne’s GSM/W-CDMA network in readiness for upgrade to future platforms including Long Term Evolution (LTE). Si.Mobil launches LTE in three cities

Slovenian cellco Si.Mobil has launched the country’s first commercial Long Term Evolution (LTE) 4G mobile broadband service over a network covering parts of Ljubljana, Brnik and Bled. At launch, LTE users are being offered the Huawei E392 USB modem for use on Si.Mobil 4G network in conjunction with the operator’s new ‘Mobilni’ 4G internet plan, and are promised data rates of between 30Mbps and 80Mbps, with a theoretical peak of 100Mbps. Last year Telekom Austria subsidiary Si.Mobil conducted a comprehensive modernization of its network, which offers 3G mobile broadband to over 90% of the population, and is designed to be easily upgraded with LTE technology across Slovenia, with many of its base stations already ‘LTE ready’.

Aircel plans for 4G launch

Indian cellco Aircel will invest around USD500 million in rolling out 4G services before the end of the year. The cellco will launch services in Chennai between October and December whilst expanding the network to other cities in the Tamil Nadu circle. In addition to wireless broadband for handsets and dongles, the provider plans to offer home broadband and related value added services (VAS) such as a video on demand (VoD) library.

Clearwire Signs LTE Roaming Agreement with China Mobile

China Mobile and USA based Clearwire have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that lays the foundation for international roaming between China and the United States using TD-LTE. Under the MOU, China Mobile and Clearwire plan to collaborate on business and technical aspects of their respective operations to define and institute the process necessary to support international roaming and to ensure the operators’ systems and devices are able to support roaming. The companies also expect this agreement to serve as a blueprint for future roaming agreements with other members of the Global TD-LTE Initiative (GTI) of which China Mobile and Clearwire are founding members.

Verizon switches on LTE network in 33 new markets

US mobile giant Verizon Wireless has announced that its in-deployment Long Term Evolution (LTE) network will launch in an additional 33 markets, while coverage has also been expanded in 32 existing 4G markets. According to the company, the latest batch of deployments means that it is on track to meet its goal of covering more than 400 US markets by the end of this year. The 33 new market launches are as follows: El Dorado/Magnolia and Russellville (Arkansas); New London County (Connecticut); Fort Pierce/Vero Beach and Melbourne/Titusville (Florida); Columbus etc etc.

Bouygues close to signing 3G deal for Paris metro

French operator Bouygues Telecom is expected to sign an agreement with Paris transit authority RATP to offer 3G in the Paris metro. SFR is the first operator to have reached an agreement with RATP to start offering 3G services from September to its subscribers at the metro and RER stations of Chatelet and Gare de Lyon. All stations on metro line 1 and most RER A and B stations will be covered next year, and by the end of 2014, SFR is committed to equip the 170 main stations of the network with 3G and LTE.

Airtel Malawi Upgrades Network to HSPA+ Capabilities

Airtel Malawi has launched an upgrade of its 3G network to support HSPA+ download speeds. The upgraded network will offer theoretical peak download speeds of up to 21Mbps. Airtel invested US$5.2m to upgrade its network infrastructure. Airtel Malawi’s Managing Director Saulos Chilima explained that the upgrade to 3.75G means Airtel will now provide the fastest data speeds in the country. This data service being offered from the 3.75G network infrastructure is not only the widest and largest in Malawi but is also the best and most affordable in the country.

Omnitel expands LTE, HSPA+ network coverage

Omnitel, Lithuania’s has announced that it has expanded coverage of its Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband network to the Baltic coast resorts of Palanga and Nida. The TeliaSonera subsidiary has also announced the upgrade of its 3G network to HSPA+ technology, which supports maximum download speeds of 21Mbps, in Kretinga, Sventosios, Palanga and the Curonian Spit. Around one-third of Omnitel’s network has so far been modernized, with other major cities, including Klaipeda, Siauliai and Panevezys, to follow shortly; by the end of 2012 the cellco aims to have upgraded around half of its 3G network. Omnitel became Lithuania’s first LTE service provider when it launched commercial services in the downtown areas of Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda, Siauliai and Panevezys in May 2011. The network, which operates in the 1800MHz frequency band, supports maximum download speeds of up to 80Mbps.

China Unicom Shares Rise on 3G Mobile User Gain

China Unicom rose the most in more than 10 months in Hong Kong trading after the company added more 3G service users than Deutsche Bank AG analysts estimated. The company rose 6.6 percent to HK$10.68 as of 1:02 p.m. in Hong Kong, poised for the biggest advance since Aug. 25. The stock is the biggest gainer among 49 members on the city’s benchmark Hang Seng Index. Bigger rival China Mobile Ltd. (941) rose 0.7 percent to HK$88.20 while China Telecom Corp. (728) jumped 4.1 percent to HK$3.77. China Unicom gained 3.03 million users for its 3G service last month.

Tunisiana Launches 3G Network

Tunisia based mobile network, Tunisiana has launched its 3G network. With launch coverage extending to 48 percent of the population, Tunisiana will offer 3G services in the regions of Tunis, Sfax, Sousse, Djerba, Cap Bon, Hammamet and Nabeul. The rollout will soon be extended to cover 71 percent of the population by the end of the year, with 87 percent coverage planned for early 2013. Tunisiana’s license allows the company to deploy an HSPA+ network on both 900Mhz and 2100Mhz bands, providing for deeper indoor coverage for customers and high definition voice quality. Tunisiana is owned by Qatar Telecom.

4G LTE users in Korea touch 8.4 million mark

The number of 4G LTE network users in Korea has touched the 8.4 million mark. The 4G LTE subscribers are expected to nearly double by year’s end. SK Telecom, Korea’s largest mobile carrier, reported its 4 millionth subscriber. KT Corp., the country’s No. 2 mobile communication service provider, said it provided LTE service to 1.4 million users, with the number growing steadily on a daily basis. LG Uplus, South Korea’s said that people using its 4G network should break the 3 million mark, as more and more people opt for the super-fast communications network that allows people to see movies with no lag time and download full-length movies in seconds.

T-Mobile Hungary expands LTE coverage to Gyor

T-Mobile Hungary expanded its LTE network’s coverage in most areas of Gyor and the settlement called Gyorujbarat. The network is available outdoors for these localities’ 88 percent of the population and indoors for 61 percent of the residents. The operator offers a Net&Roll 4G mobile internet package and a LTE-enabled device to those who wish to subscribe. A number of 4G USB modems as well as Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE tablets are available. In addition, one can order the 4G router from T-Mobile’s website. Once connected to the 4G/LTE network, the router distributes the large bandwidth provided by the technology among Wi-Fi enabled equipment. Claranet UK launches 3G connectivity service

Claranet UK has launched a new 3G service integrating mobile working and back-up connectivity, which links directly to its private network. This new service means that customers and their end users will not have to use the public internet for any flow of data. Customers can connect with Claranet’s private network by using either a SIM card for mobile users or a 3G router to provide extra connectivity for office locations. The service will keep data within an organization’s firewall and will allow a company to meet changing demand as the trend for bring your own device (BYOD) develops. Polkomtel signs agreement with Ericsson on WCDMA, LTE

Poland Polkomtel signed an agreement with Ericsson on supply, integration and maintenance of elements of the access and core mobile network. Ericsson has committed itself to supply WCDMA and LTE technologies and cooperate fully with other suppliers of hardware or software for the networks Plus and Aero2. The signed agreement will enable the modernization and expansion of the existing radio network coverage of WCDMA and LTE in the Northern and Western Poland and adapt the backbone network to support broadband services. Ericsson is a longtime partner of Plus. Comba supplies equipment to enable 3G coverage in Chile

Comba Telecom Systems Holdings is supplying equipment to a mobile enhancement project for a major mobile operator at Chile’s Metro de Santiago metro system in South America. The project calls for the development of a mobile system to enable 3G coverage for passengers travelling within the metro stations and tunnels. Working with a local systems integrator, Comba Telecom is supplying passive products, antennas, and other accessories to the project. The systems integrator is implementing a mobile service using Comba Telecom’s equipment along with Node Bs to enable 3G data and voice network covering the Santiago Metro system which includes five lines, 108 stations and over 100 kilometers of tunnels and track.

Fido to Launch LTE Network within Months

Canadian mobile network, Fido announced today that LTE service will be unleashed this summer, giving customers the speed of an enhanced network service across major markets in Canada, including in the cities and surrounding areas of Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Montréal and St. Johns with more cities to launch throughout 2012. Coming this summer, the Fido Mobile Hotspot will be the first LTE-enabled device available from Fido. This device creates a Wi-Fi hotspot wherever, and whenever customers need it, and wirelessly connects up to 10 Wi-Fi capable devices simultaneously. 3G comes to the Channel Tunnel in time for the Olympics

People traveling through the Channel Tunnel can now access mobile services 100 meters under the sea as long as they are heading to the U.K., rather than crossing over to France. French operators Bouygues Telecom, Orange and SFR have all started providing 2G and 3G services in the south tunnel which runs from France to the U.K enabling passengers and drivers on the Eurostar, Shuttle and Freight service to use their phones under the English Channel. However, British operators will not begin offering similar services in the north tunnel taken when traveling from the U.K. to France until the Olympic games are over.

Hrvatski Telekom increases 4G coverage in three cities

Croatian operator Hrvatski Telekom has extended the coverage of its 4G network in the cities of Split, Rijeka and Osijek, increasing data speeds tenfold. During a promotional period lasting until 01 October, customers who activate the Extreme Mobile net tariffs will receive unlimited browsing with speeds of up to 75 Mbps. Students and young people between 18 and 28 years also have an additional benefit: a HRK 50 discount on the monthly fee for the Extreme Mobile L tariff, which reduces the price to HRK 125.

Huawei Opens Two New LTE Testing Labs in China

Huawei has opened new TD-LTE IOT (Interoperability Testing) labs in Xi’an and Shenzhen, China.¬ The open IOT labs will focus on LTE solutions for voice, multi-mode roaming and multi-mode smartphones in collaboration with industry partners. In April of this year, Huawei and Intel established a joint IOT lab in Beijing to promote the development of the TD-LTE ecosystem. The establishment of open IOT labs is another approach for this. The IOT lab in Xi’an is capable of conducting interoperability testing between chipsets and network systems, devices and network systems. It can also perform tests between multiple systems, including GSM/WCDMA/CDMA/TD-SCDMA/LTE TDD/FDD and using mainstream TD-LTE bands (1.9, 2.3, 2.6 and 3.5GHz). The lab’s device test environment can support tests on devices from five different manufacturers simultaneously.

ZTE Wins Largest Share of China Telecom 2012 CDMA Purchase Project

¬ZTE has won a contract worth US$281.5 million for the largest share in China Telecom’s 2012 CDMA Purchase Project. During the project, ZTE will provide its Uni-Ran solution and relevant services in over 220 cities of 27 provinces across China. The Uni-Ran solution comprises a series of products based on SDR technology. Through this project, ZTE says that it will gain a cumulative share of 43.5 percent of China Telecom’s CDMA network. ZTE’s Uni-Ran solution will enhance network services and compliment China Telecom’s operations, filling the network evolution needs. According to a report released by consulting firm IDC, ZTE remained the world’s No. 1 CDMA supplier at the end of 2011 with of 32.6 per cent worldwide market share.

Samsung to release LTE version of Galaxy S3

The 4G LTE version of Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S3 smartphone was released through mobile providers SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus. The 3G version was released last month. The Galaxy S3 is the latest of the electronics giant’s popular Galaxy series. More than 50 million of the gadgets have been sold across the world so far. Despite its stellar sales, Samsung faces growing competition in Korea from LG Electronics and Pantech. Samsung had more than a 60 percent share of the LTE market on the strength of the Galaxy Note phone in the first half of this year.

Powered by a number of patented technologies, the HiLink E303Cs automatically connects users to the Internet in as little as 15 seconds after the data card is inserted into the USB port, without the need for a tedious dial-in process, driver installation or manual configuration. This is up to 75 percent faster than products currently on the market. HTC to Embed LTE Network Testing Services into Two Smartphones

Huawei to Develop LTE Hardware for Rural Brazil

¬Huawei has signed an agreement with the Brazilian government to develop LTE based hardware that can expand coverage in rural areas by using the 450 MHz spectrum. In return the government is set to offer tax breaks to the Chinese company. The agreement was signed in Brasilia by the Communications Minister, Paulo Bernardo, and by the president of Huawei in Brazil, Veni Shone. Minister Paulo Bernardo said that there was significant inequality between urban and rural areas in terms of Internet access and noted that the new technology would increase the percentage of homes linked to the Internet to 70 percent by the end of 2014.

ZTE, Chile University to open innovation center

ZTE will open an innovation and training centre in cooperation with the Universidad de Chile. Under the terms of the agreement, ZTE Chile will donate 4G equipment to the centre and the Universidad de Chile’s Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences will provide human capital and laboratories. The university and ZTE will sign an MOU to expand the functions of the innovation centre to include training for ZTE engineers and university students.

Ericsson Wins Hong Kong LTE Contract

China Mobile’s Hong Kong subsidiary has selected Ericsson to expand their commercial LTE network with TD-LTE (LTE TDD) in Hong Kong. Ericsson is already the sole supplier for China Mobile Hong Kong’s LTE FDD network. Together the companies will now build a converged LTE FDD/TDD network. Ericsson will also upgrade the operator’s existing Evolved Packet Core (EPC) network. Under the agreement, Ericsson will deliver the TD-LTE radio access network, network management using Ericsson OSS-RC, Evolved Packet Core network expansion and upgrade; consulting and systems integration services as well related design, training and support services.

Ericsson inks deal to upgrade Vodafone Egypt’s network

Ericsson has been selected to transform the network of Egyptian mobile network operator Vodafone Egypt. Ericsson will deploy its latest RBS 6000 technology across Vodafone Egypt’s network, offering an energy-efficient, compact site solution that supports GSM/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA and Long Term Evolution (LTE) in a single package. It is claimed that, as a multi-standard base station, the RBS 6000 will allow Vodafone Egypt a smooth transition to new technologies in the future, while also minimizing operational expenses and reducing the company’s environmental impact. LG’s Optimus LTE Line Surpasses the 4-Million Mark Worldwide

LG’s Optimus LTE smartphone line has sold more than FOUR million units worldwide. LG Optimus LTE and Optimus LTE Tag were both on the million-seller list in 2011, and the newly released Optimus LTE2 has sold more than 400-thousand units in Korea alone. LG Electronics is currently planning to increase the number of countries to which it exports the phones to 20 from the current 10.
