Small Cell Forum, ETSI Team Up on Virtualization Standards

The Small Cell Forum, the independent industry and operator association that supports small cell
deployment worldwide, has signed an agreement to collaborate with the European Telecommunications
Standards Institute (ETSI) on operator requirements and recommendations for the virtualization of the
small cell layer. The agreement was reached at the 65th ETSI general assembly held in Sophia
Antipolis, France, and opens the way for Small Cell Forum’s recommendations to be included in future
ETSI use case definitions.

App Download Volume and User Acquisition Costs in January Shatter Records

January’s daily app download volume surged to 10.3 million, easily surpassing December’s record of 9.2 million, according to the Fiksu Indexes. The Fiksu App Store Competitive Index, which tracks the average aggregate daily download volume of the top 200 free iOS apps, grew 12 percent month over month and a substantial 61 percent since January 2014 when app download volumes were at 6.4M.

Cosmote Greece rolls out 300MbpsLTE-A in Athens and Thessaloniki

OTE’s Greek mobile unit Cosmote has commercially launched 300Mbps-capable Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) technology on its network in selected regions of Athens and Thessaloniki. Ultel suspends CDMA service

Turkish-Azeri joint venture Ulduz Telekom (Ultel) has announced that it is suspending its ‘low-speed’ (up to 128kbps) CDMA-based broadband service as of today (10 March). The operator hopes to migrate any remaining subscribers to one of its other access technologies, such as ADSL or fibre-to-the-building (FTTB).Confirming the news, an Ultel representative told the local media that demand for data transmission services over the CDMA network have been rendered irrelevant by the introduction of more advanced technologies.

Smartphone Sales Surpassed One Billion Units in 2014

Worldwide sales of smartphones to end users had a record fourth quarter of 2014 with an increase of 29.9 percent from the fourth quarter of 2013 to reach 367.5 million units, according to Gartner. Samsung lost the No. 1 spot to Apple in the global smartphone market in the fourth quarter of 2014. Samsung had been in the top spot since 2012.

69m SIMs Verified and 11m Blocked So Far, PTA Confirms

With more than a month left until the deadline for re-verification, 68.76 million SIMs have been confirmed whilst a further 10.96 million have been disowned by customers, according to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). The roughly 80 million SIMs currently accounted for were registered to just 53.07 million Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs).

Kyrgyzstan Extends Pre-Paid Registration Deadline to 8 August

Kyrgyzstan’s State Communications Agency (SCA) has extended the pre-paid SIM registration deadline to 8 August 2015, following the failure of the country’s operators to meet the original 8 March target. SCA data reveals that by early March, the largest mobile operator by market share, Megacom, had registered just 52.0% (1.617 million) of the active SIMs on its network, while Sky Mobile, which operates under the Beeline brand, had registered 59.8% of its user base, equating to 2.542 million SIMs.

All Three Moroccan Cellcos Apply for LTE Concessions

Moroccan telecoms regulator, the Agence Nationale de Reglementation de Telecom (ANRT), has announced that the country’s three mobile operators – Itissalat Al Maghrib (IAM, Maroc Telecom), Inwi (Wana) and Medi Telecom (Meditel) – have all submitted their bids for 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile licences. The watchdog disclosed that the submitted applications will now be assessed on the basis of the operators’ commitments in terms of infrastructure deployment, coverage, Quality of Service (QoS), consistency of business plan, proposed strategy and financial offer.

Megacom Continues Network Upgrade

Kyrgyzstan mobile operator Megacom continues its network upgrade programme across the country, reaching the villages of Dzhiyde and Chon-Kapka in the Talas region; Novopokrovka, Ak-Kuduk, Pervomayskiy and Khun-Chi in the Chuy region; and Arpa-Say, Kakyr, Kara-Dobo, Mayak and Pyldyrak in the Batken region. 3G services were launched in the village of Novopokrovka. A total 98 percent of the country’s population is covered by the Megacom network.

The L+ package was added to the offer, providing 100 minutes of on-net calls, 100 on-net SMS and 100 MB mobile internet traffic. The cost of data after using up the plan was reduced to KZT 1 per MB. Free access to Facebook and Russian social networks Vkontakte, My World and Odnoklassniki also was added to the service. The monthly subscription of the new package costs KZT 79.

Armentel launches new roaming service

Mobile operator Armentel, working under the Beeline Armenia brand, is offering subscribers the new Connected+ roaming service. Pakistan 3G base passes 10m milestone

Pakistan’s 3G subscriber base crossed the ten million mark in February 2015, according to statistics published by sector regulator the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. 3G subscriptions reached 10.33 million as at 28 February 2015, up 14.5% compared to the previous month, whilst the country’s 4G customer base grew by 38.9% to 68,184. Geocell Switches on LTE in Tbilisi

PTA Looking to Scrap SIM Cap after Verification Drive

LTE subscriber numbers reached a new milestone with nearly half a billion connections worldwide at the end of 2014 according to data gathered by Ovum. North America contributed significantly to global LTE connections with 33 percent or 164 million of the total 498 million LTE connections worldwide, although in mid-year the Asia Pacific region surpassed the U.S. and Canada in the top spot in terms of total LTE connections.

MTS Extends LTE-1800 Network to Krasnodar

Russian wireless giant Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has announced that it has switched on its 1800MHz Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in Krasnodar Krai in the Southern Federal District. At launch the network covers 36 population centres in the region, with that figure expected to rise to 160 by the end of 2016. MTS currently claims operational LTE networks in 77 of Russia’s 85 regions.

MTN Ghana to invest USD122m in network upgrades during 2015

MTN Ghana, the country’s leading mobile operator in terms of subscribers, has revealed plans to invest GHS460 million (USD122 million) in 2015, with a view to improving its networks. The investment was divulged to BizTech Africa by MTN Ghana CEO Serame Taukobong, and follows infrastructure investments of GHS311 million in 2014. In an effort to keep pace with the increased demand for mobile data, Mr Taukobong notes that MTN Ghana has deployed an additional 112 3G base transceiver stations (BTS) in recent months.

Jasmine to enter 4G auction

Thai telecoms group Jasmine International, parent of fixed network operator Triple T Broadband, plans to bid in 4G mobile spectrum licences tentatively scheduled for August, it said in a statement to the local stock exchange, as reported by Reuters. Jasmine will seek a strategic partner for the 4G auction, and has earmarked THB25-35 billion (USD769 million-USD1.08 billion) for 4G investment, to be sourced partly from the proceeds of its broadband internet infrastructure fund listing. In other Jasmine news, the group’s largest individual shareholder Pete Bodharamik (25.8%) said in a statement he had no plans to sell his stake, denying market rumours of involvement in recent share sell-offs.

BT Returns to Consumer Mobile Market with Launch of 4G SIM Only Tariffs

British fixed line incumbent BT has made a return to the residential mobile sector, having launched a number ofSIM-only 4G tariffs, which it is offering over the network of EE, the local cellco which it agreed to acquire back in February. Offering services under the ‘BT Mobile’ banner, the operator is arguably looking to the service to drive uptake of its fixed broadband services, with those customers signed up to the latter given a GBP5 (USD7.43) per month discount on each of the three plans that are available.

CTM Lays Out 4G Battle Plan

Fixed line and mobile operator Companhia de Telecomunicacoes de Macau (CTM), one of the four newly 4G licensed operators in the territory, announced that it will invest up to MOP1.6 billion (USD196 million) in the next three years on network expansion. Vodafone Greece Claims LTE-A First

Vodafone claims that it has become the first operator in Greece to switch on a commercial Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) network. The new platform, which is believed to aggregate spectrum in the 1800MHz and 2600MHz bands, supports theoretical down/uplink speeds of up to 300Mbps/50Mbps, double that offered by the operator’s LTE network, and seven times faster than the speeds available over its 3G network. Initially, Vodafone’s LTE-A network is available only in the vicinity of selected Vodafone retail stores in Athens.

BlackBerry Returns to Profit despite Lower Revenues in Q4

BlackBerry said revenues for its fourth quarter to 28 February fell to USD 660 million from 3.3 billion the year before, including negative forex effects of USD 12 million. Hardware contributed 42 percent to revenues, services accounted for another 47 percent and software for 10 percent. Hardware revenue was recognised on 1.3 million BlackBerry smartphones. ZTE Credits 2014 94% Profit Rise to 4G Equipment, Smartphone Sales

ZTE has reported its full year 2014 results showing a 94% increase in net profits, which the Chinese vendor attributed to 4G network equipment and smartphone sales. The kit maker claimed to be the world’s fastest growing provider of 4G solutions in 2014, and said it is using its strong position in the market to take the lead in 5G technology research. The firm reported total annual net profit of RMB2.6 billion ($423.5 million), and revenues came to RMB81.47 billion representing a year-on-year increase of 8.3%. Revenue from international operations accounted for 50.2% (RMB40.89 billion) of total revenues.

Apple, Samsung Maintain Control of Tablet Market In 2014

Apple and Samsung managed to maintain control over the branded tablet market in 2014, although Apple carried the market as expected, according to new data from ABI Research. Apple’s iPad experienced a decline of 15 percent in shipments between 2013 and 2014 but gained 9 percent market volume quarter-over-quarter. In contrast, Samsung managed 7 percent unit growth due to the success of the company’s new flagship Galaxy Tab S slates and Tab 4 series.

Ericsson Sues Apple for Patent Infringement to Defend Fair Licensing System

Ericsson says that it filed two complaints with the International Trade Commission (ITC) and seven complaints in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas against Apple asserting 41 patents covering many aspects of Apple’s iPhones and iPads.
