Dear Readers,
Another splendid month of endeavors ended in telecom world bringing remarkable developments around the globe. Government of Pakistan announced that the auction for 3G and 4G (LTE) services had been set for April 23, 2014. A revised Information Memorandum for the auction of the next generation spectrum (3G/4G) was published to address the concerns of all the stakeholders, whereas PTA also held an information session for the prospective bidders of next generation spectrum auction and took the process to next level. Mobilink has announced that it will complete the roll out Pakistan’s most modernized and largest 3G ready network with more than 9000 cell sites across the country by July 2014 and while Warid Telecom completed its mobile energy efficiency optimization project.

Mobile penetration reached 64.28% in Uzbekistan, whereas in Kyrgyzstan mobile telephony subscriber base totaled 6.737 million at the end of 2013, the figure grew by 20 percent year-on-year from 5.615 million MCIT Afghanistanhas issued 3G Technology license to Afghan Wireless Company during a press conference and MegaCom Company started its first “electronic wallet” service called “Els”. In Kazakastan, mobile operator Altel is planning to launch its GSM services soon and it has also started switching subscribers of its Jet internet services to the LTE network in the city of Temirtau.

Derek Aberle, executive vice president of Qualcomm Incorporated and group president has been promoted to president of Qualcomm Incorporated and Steven Mollenkopf also took over as the CEO of the company. Qualcomm Technologies in cooperation with Sprint Corporation and NASCAR, demonstrated the second phase of an over-the-air trial of an LTE TDD hyper-dense small cell network at the Phoenix International Raceway. As part of the trial, Qualcomm Technologies has installed 31 small cell base stations in the garage area of the Phoenix International Raceway in order to test density limits, measure network performance capabilities and quantify the potential impact on users’ mobile experiences. Qualcomm Retail Solutions was chosen by MLBAM to supply iBeacon hardware as the interactive media and Internet Company of Major League Baseball (MLB) in connection with the completion of its initial rollout of the technology in 20 ballparks for Opening Day of the 2014 MLB season.

PTA Holds Information Session for Prospective Bidders of Next Generation Spectrum Auction

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) held an information session for the prospective bidders of next generation spectrum auction. Chairman PTA, Dr. Syed Ismail Shah, Member (Finance) Mr. Tariq Sultan, representatives from Value Partners Management Consulting, senior officers of mobile operators and PTA attended the session. Representatives of Value Partners briefed the participants about different aspects of upcoming auction process and arrangements for it being made by PTA. The consultation session provided professional analysis on the whole bidding process as per PTA’s Information Memorandum (IM) and for the successful completion of auction in a transparent manner.

Ucell Announces About Hike of Subscription Fees

Ucell has announced about growth of daily subscription fee in some of its tariff plans by US$0.01. The operator said that the subscription fee is now set at US$0.04 at such tariff plans as Freedom of Talk, Simple, Gap, Bolshe Obsheniye, Online and Legko Zapomnit.

PTA Requires Biometric Verification in Sindh, Baluchistan

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that SIMs in the provinces of Sindh and Baluchistan can only be activated through the biometric SIM verification system from 1 April. The PTA earlier required operators to install biometric verification systems to curb SIM fraud and is now requiring the system to be used in the two provinces for all SIM sales, including replacements and supplementary connections. Despite orders, the operators have reportedly not installed biometric identity verification systems across all their shops and franchises or are not always using the system.

Do It Becomes Regular Service of Beeline

Beeline’s Do It service offering unlimited mobile Internet during night time, became a regular service. The subscribers can use unlimited Internet from 01:00 to 09:00 for US$1.5 a day.

Orange Launches New Tariff Plan “Eagle” – Freedom, Affordability, Convenience

Orange Armenia has introduced its new tariff plan “Eagle” with minutes to all networks at exactly the same affordable rate. For only 2000 AMD monthly fee, this tariff plan includes 200 all net minutes and 200 MB. After finishing their monthly included minutes, customers of the new Eagle tariff plan will be able to call to any Armenian network at a flat rate of 15 AMD/min. Subscribers of other animal tariff plans can join Eagle after finishing their handset commitments and paying a migration fee.

Beeline Increases Prices for Outgoing Calls

Largest communication operator Beeline will increase the price of all outgoing calls within Uzbekistan from 15 April 2014. The operator said on its website that from 15 April 2014 the price of minutes for all outgoing calls within Uzbekistan will increase by half cent for all tariff plans, including tariffs from Status series. All other terms of tariffs will not change, the operator said in a statement.

Electronic Purse “Els” Is Available To All Subscribers MegaCom

MegaCom Company has begun a new service “electronic wallet” called “Els” designed to simplify life. Electronic purse “Els” is a virtual account number submitted by the mobile device, allowing to make payments, invest, transfer, and cash money electronically. It covers the possibility of a bank account, but offers a more convenient and easy way to make mobile financial transactions.

Government Revises IM for Spectrum Auction

Government of Pakistan has revised Information Memorandum (IM) for the auction of the next generation spectrum (3G/4G) that will address the concerns of all the stakeholders. The CMOs raised their concerns on the initial IM issued by the government in which new entrants were given ‘special treatment’.

Mobile Penetration in Uzbekistan Makes Up 64.28%

According to the local IT magazine InfoCom.Uz the level of penetration of mobile communication in Uzbekistan made up 64.28%. As of 1 January 2014, number of permanent population of Uzbekistan made up 30.489 million people. At the same time, number of mobile communication users reached 19.6 million people. So, the penetration level of mobile communication hit 64.28%. Currently, four operators render mobile communication services in Uzbekistan. Beeline and Ucell provide services on GSM standard and Perfectum Mobile and Uzmobile – CDMA standard.

Zong Launches Secondary Number Service

Zong has launched the “Doosra Number” offer. The service allows customers to have an additional phone number with their main number on the same SIM. Customers can switch off the Doosra number at certain hours, for example after business hours, and block unwanted calls. Calls from the Doosra number are priced at PKR 1.60 per minute (plus tax) and SMS messages cost PKR 0.50 (plus tax) while calls from the primary number are charged per the customer’s tariff plan. Subscription charges are PKR 30 per month (plus tax).

Babilon-Mobile Runs Joint Promotion with Huawei

Tajikistan mobile operator Babilon-Mobile has launched a seasonal promotion for the Ascend Y511 smartphone in cooperation with Huawei. The Android 4.2 OS and the dual-core MTK6572 1.3 GHz processor-powered device, featuring a 4.5-inch screen, 3 megapixel main camera and 0.3 megapixel front-camera, is being offered for TJS 548 in Babilon-Mobilie branded shops under the promotion. Subscribers are also being offered the promotional Navruz package when buying the smartphone.

Pakistan Network Completes Mobile Energy Efficiency Optimization Project

The GSMA has announced the completion of its second Mobile Energy Efficiency (MEE) Optimization project located in Pakistan working in conjunction with mobile operator Warid Telecom and systems integrator Cascadiant. The project trials energy-saving technology in Warid’s network and demonstrates energy savings of between 30 and 60 percent. When the solutions are rolled out across Warid’s network in Pakistan, the annual savings are expected to be more than US$6 million in energy costs.

Ufone Upgrades Systems with Teradata

Pakistani mobile operator Ufone has selected analytics data services company Teradata to upgrade its customer data system. The Teradata platform provides Ufone with data from multiple source systems to drive cross-selling and up-selling. Ufone’s CTO Saad Muzaffar Waraich said he expected the coming year to be “extremely challenging” but also full of opportunities.

Kyrgyzstan Mobile Subscriber Base at 6.737 Mln at End-2013

Kyrgyzstan’s mobile telephony subscriber base totaled 6.737 million at the end of 2013, according to a statement from the State Communications Agency. The figure grew by 20 percent year-on-year from 5.615 million. Average ARPU of Kyrgyzstan mobile operators currently totals USD 3. The Kyrgyzstan mobile connection market formed 71 percent of the whole communications market, down by 3 percentage points year-on-year. The reason for the decrease was the growth in the internet services proportion from 13.9 percent to 17.9 percent year-on-year. The fixed connection market share totaled 5.7 percent. Revenue at Kyrgyzstan mobile operators grew by 18.5 percent to KGS 25.059 billion in 2013.

Roshan Wins B Lab Environmental Impact Award

Afghanistan operator Roshan, has been recognized by international not-for-profit organization B Lab, for its positive overall social and environmental impact, in the third annual ‘B Corp Best for the World’ list. In 2013, Roshan became the first Afghan company to be certified as a B Corporation and is the only one in Afghanistan to date. Roshan said that it uses telecommunications to bridge critical infrastructure gaps, investing in fields such as health and financial inclusion, and programmes for children, women and communities. The company employs more than 1,100 people, 19 percent of them women and 97 percent of who are Afghan, and provides indirect employment to more than 30,000 people.

Mobilink Rolls out Pakistan’s Largest 3G Ready Network

Mobilink has announced that it will complete the roll out Pakistan’s most modernized and largest 3G ready network with more than 9000 cell sites across the country by July 2014. The network modernization is in line with Mobilink’s strategy to provide its customers with best voice quality and fastest data speeds. The initiative was enabled by VimpelCom with investments made on various fronts including network modernization taking its total investment in Pakistan to USD 4.3 billion – the highest in Pakistan’s telecom industry. Mobilink initiated its network modernization earlier in May 2013 and more than 70% of the network has already been revamped with state-of-the-art 3G-enabled equipment.

Ucell Modifies VAS Rates

Uzbekistan mobile operator Ucell will introduce a daily subscription for its ‘Who Called’ service for prepaid subscribers from 27 March. The fee will be USD 0.0033. The service enables users to find out who has called when they were out of the network coverage area or when the handset was switched off. The operator also plans to modify the payment conditions for its number withholding service for postpaid subscribers from 01 April. A USD 0.10 daily subscription will be introduced instead of the USD 2.4 monthly subscription rate.

MCIT Issues 3G license to Afghan Wireless Communications Company (AWCC)

MCIT has issued 3G Technology license to Afghan Wireless Company during a press conference. Two years ago MCIT started issuance of 3G technology licenses and to date it has issued to four (etisalat, MTN, Roshan and Afghan Telecom) companies.

Uzbekistan to Introduce Nine Digit Telephone Numbers

Uzbekistan is planning to introduce single nine digit system of telephone numbers in future.This step is envisaged with the guiding document “System and plan of numeration of telecommunication networks of Uzbekistan”, which was approved by decree of the State Committee of communication, information and telecommunication technologies from 26 December 2013 and came into force on 10 January 2014.The three number zone codes, which currently used in Uzbekistan, will be replaced to two digit numbers.

Afghan Wireless Banu SIM Card Now Available in Kabul

Afghan Wireless has started a plan with special tariff for women of Afghanistan. SIM price for BANU SIM is 100 AFN. SIM card has 6 AFN in core account and customers can use it for making any voice calls, SMS, or GPRS. Initially BANU is launched in Kabul but later it will be available in all regions off Afghanistan.

PTA Orders Blocking Of 6 Million Unregistered SIMS

On orders of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Pakistani mobile operators have blocked almost six million unregistered SIMS. The SIMS were sold before the National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) designed the new identity verification system for issuing SIMS.

BASE Company Confirms LTE-A Trials

Belgium’s BASE Company claims to have become the country’s first operator to trial LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) technology. In confirming the development BASE revealed that it had carried out tests of the 4G technology in Hasselt in partnership with Chinese vendor ZTE using 2×20MHz Carrier Aggregation, combined with MIMO 2×2 technology, allowing maximum speeds of up to 300Mbps.

Pakistan Migrates From 2G TDM Satellite Backhaul Network to All-IP 3G

Comtech EF Data and Pakistani satellite system integrator and service provider Supernet Limited have successfully shifted the entire 2G TDM satellite backhaul network to a fully IP-optimized backhaul solution to support current 2G/2.5G and future 3G operations of a leading mobile network operator in Pakistan. This migrated satellite 3G network can carry more than 500 Mbps of voice and data traffic, and will be carried out simply enabling the optional IP Packet Processor of Comtech EF Data’s CDM-625 Advanced Satellite Modem with DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier. The migration does not increase the satellite bandwidth and is fully able to maintain the service quality.

Altel to Launch GSM Services

Kazakhstan operator Altel, a subsidiary of national operator Kazakhtelecom, plans to launch its GSM services soon, reports Profit.kz. It has already begun advertising the service, and has started testing the GSM network. Altel plans to launch several packages of GSM service after it begins commercial operation. The date of the commercial launch has not been specified yet. The operator has recently launched its LTE services.

PTCL Collaborates With Khushali Bank to Provide Managed WAN Services

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited has today inked an agreement with Khushali Bank Limited to provide end-to-end connectivity solutions through its Managed WAN services. The agreement entails provision of Data Connectivity, Hosted IP Video Surveillance and Managed Router to more than 100 branches of Khushali Bank, which is one of the largest Micro Finance Bank in Pakistan.

TCI launches 3G, upgrades fixed broadband as O3b bandwidth goes commercial

Telecom Cook Islands has announced that 3G W-CDMA-based mobile data services are now available to its customers on a commercial basis, initially on the largest island Rarotonga only. The launch of 3G mobile internet services is supported by TCI’s increased international bandwidth via its partnership with medium earth orbit satellite (MEO) operator O3b Networks.

PTA To Stop Afghan Companies’ Roaming Facility

Peshawar High Court (PHC) directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to stop roaming facility of the cellular companies of Afghanistan in Pakistan. A two-member bench said that the court has received authentic reports that 51 percent controlling shares of the cellular companies running in Afghanistan were given to the hostile elements to Pakistan or their agencies since long. Describing it as a matter of concern, directed the PTA to stop their roaming facility and SIMs activation.

Altel Switches To LTE in Temirtau

Kazakhstan operator Altel has started switching subscribers of its Jet internet services to the LTE network in the city of Temirtau. The replacement of the Jet USB modem with a LTE device costs KZT 1,100 until 31 March. The price will total KZT 1,650 from 1 April. The offer is available in the operator’s two shops in the city. Altel launched its LTE services in the cities of Aktau, Aktobe, Atyrau, Karaganda, Ust-Kamenogorsk and Shymkent in December 2013, and the services were launched in Astana and Almaty in September 2013.

Pakistan Close to Settling Assets Dispute with Etisalat

Pakistan’s government may have moved a step closer to resolving a long standing dispute with the UAE’s Etisalat over outstanding payments from the privatization of PTCL. The dispute relates to the transfer of property that should have been included with PTCL when it was sold, but the legal title remained with the government. Of the 131 outstanding properties, it has been reported that 68 have now been transferred to PTCL, and the remaining are in the process of being handed over. Megafon Tajikistan has modified certain conditions for its ‘International NGN’ offering. Calls to the network of Russian mobile operator Megafon are being offered for TJS 0.66 for the first call minute and TJS 0.30 for each subsequent call minute. The service can be activated over the USSD menu at no charge. Calls to the Megafon network used to cost TJS 0.30 per minute throughout the call. Entel, Movistar and Claro Receive 4G Licenses

Chilean telecoms regulator has announced the allocation of three licenses for 700MHz frequencies to Entel, Movistar Chile and Claro Chile. Entel won the ‘B’ block with an offer of CLP6.88 billion (USD12.31 million), whilst Movistar paid CLP4.25 billion for the ‘A’ block and Claro was handed the ‘C’ block for payment of CLP404.2 million. Under the terms of the concession, the trio must deploy nationwide 4G networks within 24 months, and must have coverage of 1,281 remote regions, 503 schools and 13 roads (totaling around 854 km) within 18 months. The licenses also oblige the trio to open their networks to mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) and offer interconnection for national roaming.

Global Tablets Market Grows 68% to 195M Units In 2013

Worldwide sales of tablets reached 195.4 million units in 2013, a 68 percent increase on 2012, according to Gartner. Growth was fueled by low-end tablets with smaller screens and first-time buyers. This helped grow Android’s share of the market to 61.9 percent of unit sales, from 45.8 percent in 2012. Apple’s iPad fell to 36.0 percent from 52.8 percent, despite growing sales to over 70 million units. Microsoft doubled its market share, to 2.1 percent or just over 4 million Windows tablets sold, from 1.0 percent in 2012. From a brand perspective, Apple remained the top vendor in 2013 with a 36.0 percent share of sales. Samsung was second, more than doubling its share to 19.1 percent, followed by Asus with 5.6 percent and Amazon with 4.8 percent. Lenovo ranked fifth with 3.3 percent of the market or 6.5 million tablets sold.

DISH Confirmed As Winner of All 176 H Block Licenses

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has confirmed that US satellite TV giant DISH Network – bidding under the ‘American H Block Wireless’ guise – walked away with all 176 licenses up for grabs during the recently completed H-Block spectrum auction. The bidding process raised a total of USD1.564 billion for government coffers. NBTC Finalizes Auction Schedule Beginning August

Thailand’s NBTC has approved the final timeframe for technology-neutral auctions in the 1800MHz and 900MHz spectrum bands. Two licenses covering 25MHz of 1800MHz band spectrum, previously used by 2G operators True Move (part of True Corp) and Digital Phone Co (part of Advanced Info Service [AIS]), will be auctioned in August this year, while one 17.5MHz license in the 900MHz band (currently in use by AIS) is scheduled to be auctioned in November (in advance of its 2G expiry in March 2015). Furthermore, the NBTC will call bids next year for 50MHz in the 1800MHz band currently in partial use by DTAC under a 2G concession set to expire at the beginning of 2018.

VimpelCom Walks Away from Talks to Buy Warid Telecom

Russia’s VimpelCom is the latest company to drop out of talks to buy Pakistan’s Warid Telecom after it could not agree a price with the company’s owners. Warid Telecom is owned by the Abu Dhabi Group, which is understood to be seeking around US$1 billion for the Pakistan mobile network. UAE based Etisalat also recently pulled out of talks to buy the company. At the moment, it is still not clear what the Abu Dhabi Group will do with the Pakistan Company. Talks with China Mobile’s local arm, Zong also fell through last year.

MTS to Purchase Up to $300 Million Worth of Ericsson LTE Kit

Russia’s Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has secured a US$300 million export guarantee to fund the purchase of Ericsson network equipment. The credit facility has been arranged with Citibank and the Swedish Export Credit Corporation (SEK), and is supported by Sweden’s Exportkreditnamnden (EKN). Tele2 Estonia bags new 2100MHz spectrum

Sweden’s Tele2 has announced that its Estonian subsidiary has acquired a second 2100MHz concession from local operator PGH Raadiovork OU. As a result of the development Tele2 says that it expects to double its 3G mobile broadband capacity ‘in many areas’, while claiming that Tele2 Estonia now has the largest spectrum portfolio of all the Estonian cellcos. Indeed, Tele2 Estonia’s spectrum portfolio now reportedly consists of 450MHz, 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2300MHz, 2600MHz and 3500MHz frequencies. No information regarding the financial terms of this latest spectrum acquisition were disclosed, however.

LTE Network Launched in Nigeria

The Nigerian mobile network Smile Communications has announced the launch of a LTE network on 800MHz spectrum in Ibadan and Lagos. Both networks were actually launched last month, but the news has only now been announced. More locations across the country will follow soon. Ericsson is the primary vendor for the LTE radio network, and is also providing a complete Evolved Packet Core network including Evolved Packet Gateway and Mobility Management Entity.

T-Mobile USA Outlines Next Phase of its LTE Network Expansion

T Mobile USA says that on the 1st anniversary of its LTE launch it is kicking off a major new program to upgrade its 2G EDGE network with LTE. The company plans to complete 50 percent of the work this year alone and expects the program to be substantially complete by the middle of next year. The upgrade will provide customers who currently experience 2G/EDGE coverage new access to LTE, and many already covered by LTE will see coverage expanded. In addition, T-Mobile plans to begin deploying 4G LTE this year in the new 700 MHz A-Block spectrum the company is in the process of acquiring.

Taiwan Mobile Contracts NSN for LTE-A Technology Rollout

Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) has been selected by Taiwan Mobile to assist in the ‘rapid rollout’ of the latter’s multi-band LTE network, which will be constructed using with the Finnish vendor’s Liquid Radio and Liquid Core technology. Under the contract, NSN will implement its high-capacity Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Stations, Evolved Packet Core technology and NetAct network management system. The agreement also covers network planning and optimization services. Further, NSN has said it will deploy LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) Carrier Aggregation technology for Taiwan Mobile in order to increase bandwidth and network performance by combining the 700MHz and 1800MHz spectrum bands.

Vodacom SA to Deploy 555 4G Sites In Gauteng

South African cellco Vodacom is planning to deploy 555 new Long Term Evolution (LTE) base stations in the Gauteng province by the end of March 2015. The expansion project also includes the rollout of 2G/3G base transceiver stations (BTS), with 180 2G- and 240 3G-enabled BTS set to be deployed. Vodafone NZ Launches LTE in Rotorua

Vodafone New Zealand has added Rotorua to its LTE footprint, and purports to offer coverage of 94.8% of the city at launch. Going forward, Vodafone’s 4G network will go live in Invercargill, Gisborne and Tauranga before the end of the month, and will be switched on in Napier, Hastings, Nelson, Dunedin and Whangarei by the end of April. Small Cells Market Healthy As 2014 Deployments Reach $1.8 Billion

According to ABI Research, outdoor Small Cells sales are expected to show a healthy 2014 growth in equipment revenue at a year on year rate of 33% to $1.8 billion. SK Telecom Launches Samsung Galaxy S5 Early

Korean mobile carrier SK Telecom has introduced the Samsung Galaxy S5 for KRW 866,800. The operator discounts the handset to as low as KRW 660,000 for long-term subscribers. The phone was initially slated to launch on 11 April but this was reportedly brought forward ahead of SK Telecom’s business suspension, which is due to start in April. However, a communications official from Samsung said the company is puzzled by the launch. He said that although SK Telecom had asked for permission to start the sales of the model this month, Samsung has consistently ignored the request. Samsung has begun talks with SK Telecom to find out the reason for the early launch. SK Telecom said it launched early to accommodate its customers. USA Sprint Signs Deal to Boost Rural LTE Coverage

Sprint says that it is working with the CCA (Competitive Carriers Association) and NetAmerica Alliance to allow existing regional mobile networks have low-cost access to Sprint’s nationwide network and the ability to purchase a wider range of devices. iSchool Project Launches with Ericsson and Bhutan Telecom

Taiwan plans to offer three LTE-suitable blocks of 2600MHz spectrum by early 2015

Taiwan’s National Communications Commission (NCC) is said to have unveiled plans to release three blocks of spectrum in the 2600MHz band. Under the state’s proposals a total of 190MHz, suitable for both frequency division duplex (FDD) and time division duplex (TDD) LTE services, will be made available. It is understood that two 70MHz blocks – 2500MHz-2570MHz and 2620MHz-2690MHz – will be designated for FDD-LTE, while a 50MHz block – 2570MHz-2620MHz – will be assigned for TDD-LTE.

DoT Approves Qualcomm’s Sale of WBSPL Stake

India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has approved Qualcomm’s sale of its stake in a wireless broadband company to Bharti Airtel. DoT had sought the legal opinion of the law ministry on the sale of the stake in Wireless Business Service Private (WBSPL) as it would bring Qualcomm’s stake to below 26 percent. Qualcomm secured spectrum in in four circles in 2010 and the auction rules at the time stated that a successful bidder must hold at least 26 percent in the licensee company. The law ministry says that this requirement is only valid until the fees are paid and the spectrum is allocated.

FET Inks 4G Hardware Deal with Ericsson

Taiwan’s Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) has inked a deal with the local subsidiary of Swedish vendor Ericsson under which it will procure 4G equipment worth TWD9.843 billion (USD324 million). FET has also struck an agreement with Xunwei Technologies, a Taiwanese subsidiary of China-based telecom vendor Huawei Technologies, to procure W-CDMA equipment, although no financial details of this contract were disclosed.

KPN completes LTE network deployment

Dutch telco KPN has announced that it has completed the rollout of its Long Term Evolution (LTE) 4G mobile network with the switching on of its latest 4G antenna in the town of Vlissingen in the Zealand region. The network now incorporates 3,000 sites and covers 95% of the Dutch population, locally-based. KPN’s 4G infrastructure has been deployed in under 14 months, with the initial launch having taken place in Amsterdam in February last year. The firm says it has spent EUR1.4 billion (USD1.85 billion) so far on LTE services, including acquiring spectrum and rolling out its networks. There will be gradual migration of users onto the new network, KPN says, with its 3G network remaining in service for at least another five years.

Qualcomm Confirms CEO Transition

Qualcomm confirmed that Steven Mollenkopf has taken over as CEO of the company. At the company’s annual shareholders meeting, the former CEO, Paul Jacobs, was named executive chairman. Lenovo Starts Yoga Tablet Sales in Kazakhstan

Lenovo has started selling the Yoga Tablet line in Kazakhstan. Two versions of the tablet are available, one with an 8-inch screen and the other with a 10-inch screen. The devices are powered by a tetra-core MT8125 1,2 GHz processor or a MT8389 processor for versions supporting 3G. The tablets support Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, GPS, and HSPA+, and feature a HD IPS screen, 5 megapixel main camera and 1.6 megapixel front-camera. The device comes with a recommended retail rate of KZT 69,990 for 8-inch version, and KZT 79,990 for the 10-inch. The versions without a 3G module will cost KZT 5,000 less.

Qualcomm and Sprint Conduct Live Trial of Hyper-Dense Small Cell Network

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., in cooperation with Sprint Corporation and NASCAR, demonstrated the second phase of an over-the-air trial of an LTE TDD hyper-dense small cell network at the Phoenix International Raceway. The trial took place March 1-2, 2014 during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series March Phoenix Race. As part of the trial, Qualcomm Technologies has installed 31 small cell base stations in the garage area of the Phoenix International Raceway in order to test density limits, measure network performance capabilities and quantify the potential impact on users’ mobile experiences. This hyper-dense network demonstration, built with Airspan’s AirSynergy2000 LTE-Advanced Pico Base Stations, is powered by Qualcomm Technologies’ small cell chipsets and UltraSON technology.

Huawei’s Full Year Profits Jump by a Third

Huawei has posted a one third jump in its full year profits as the company benefits from strong demand in its domestic market. The company posted a 34% increase in profits to RMB21 billion (US$3.47 billion), on revenues which rose more modestly by 8.5 percent to RMB 239 billion (US$39.5 billion). The company said that profits rose faster than sales due to cost cutting measures which saw gross margin improve by 1.2 percent to 41 percent.

Samsung Presents Galaxy Note Pro in Kazakhstan

Samsung has presented its Galaxy Note Pro tablet in Almaty. The device, powered by the octa-core Samsung Exynos 5 1.9 GHz processor, features a 12.2-inch WQZGA display, pre-installed Cisco WebEx and numerous other applications. The tablet supports Wi-Fi 802.11ac, DLNA, USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 4.0. The Android 4.4 device with 32 GB internal memory costs from KZT 140,000 to KZT 180,000 in Kazakhstan.

Alcatel-Lucent Wins Billion Dollar Contract from China Mobile

Alcatel Lucent has won a contract worth EUR750 million (US$1 billion) from China Mobile to upgrade the mobile network for an all IP ultra-broadband network paving the way for future network functions virtualization (NFV) and cloud based services. Microsoft and Dell Sign Android Patents Agreement

In a statement, Microsoft and Dell said that they have signed shared patent licensing agreements — related to Android and Chrome OS devices and Xbox gaming consoles. Under the terms of the agreement, they agreed on royalties for Dell’s products running the Android or Chrome platforms and on consideration to Dell for a license for Xbox gaming consoles. No meaningful details were provided in the statement. HTC Shows Off New Smartphone with Depth Sensor Camera Effects

HTC has shown off its latest flagship smartphone the HTC One (M8) which features a larger screen and louder speakers than its predecessor. It also comes with a depth sensor that lets photos be focused again after they have been taken. The company shipped an estimated just 6.4 million units of the original HTC One smartphone, about a fifth of the volumes of flagship models from its rivals. Although the new handset is a generic touchscreen Android handset, the company has opted to make the phone stand out with its camera feature. The new model also boasts a 40% improvement in battery life compared to its predecessor, despite coming with a larger screen.

Huawei Wins GSM-R Rollout Contract in Zambia

Huawei says that it has won a contract to deploy a GSM R network for Zambia Railways. Under a US$51 million contract, Huawei and Bombardier Transportation will support Zambia Railways on the roll out of this project in collaboration with local company GMC Technologies. The contract follows on from a grant of US$120 million from the Zambian government in 2013 to upgrade the signal-tracking capability of the Chingola-Livingstone railway line. The train signaling technology will be designed and implemented by Bombardier using its Interflo 550 communications-based signaling system with full automatic train protection (ATP).

Motorola Shows Off Early Design for SmartWatch

One of the first devices to work with Google’s new Android Wear OS has been shown off although barely any technical details are known yet. What is called the Moto 360 is a smartwatch from Motorola that will be released later this year. In a brief post, the company said that the watch will accept Google Glass style voice commands, and with a “twist of the wrist” users can see whose emailing or calling, access the calendar, or social media posts. The company said that the Moto 360 will be available in a variety of styles globally in summer 2014, starting in the USA.

Google Releases Android OS for Wearable Devices

Google has announced an extension to its Android OS to allow the software to be used in so called wearable devices. The company said it is starting with smart watches, but expects to expand the software to a much wider range of consumer devices that can be worn. Apple Slips While Huawei Gains In Brand Preference Survey

Apple’s brand preference rating fell by 5.1 points between Q2 and Q4 2013 one of the weakest performances of 21 major technology brands in the latest survey published by Strategy Analytics. Of particular concern to Apple is that its rating fell furthest in its core affluent and younger demographics. Samsung remained in first place, gaining ground in continental Europe but falling back in the USA and UK. The best performance came from Huawei with an increase of 3.8 points since Q2 2013 and strong gains in upper income segments. Blackberry (down 11.9 points) and Motorola (down 6.1) saw the biggest declines, reflecting the difficulties of these brands in recent times.

Microsoft Adds LTE Support to the Surface Tablet

Microsoft has shown off a new version of its Surface tablet that is going on sale in the USA with AT&T. The Surface 2 is a 64GB mobile broadband-ready version of Surface 2 that will be available to purchase for US$679 in the USA with immediate effect. Huawei and Mobily to Develop Saudi Smart Network

China’ Huawei has signed a contract with Saudi Arabia’s Mobily to launch a “smart network” in the Kingdom. Huawei said that the agreement will see co-operate with the Saudi mobile network on a series of business and market research programmes over the next five years, including the exploration of ways in which Mobily can maximize the value of its existing infrastructure.

Alcatel-Lucent Wins Taiwan VoLTE Contract

Alcatel Lucent has won an LTE overlay network from Asia Pacific Telecom (APT) that will enable APT to be the first service provider in Taiwan to offer Voice over LTE (VoLTE). Initial deployment of APT’s LTE network and VoLTE service will begin in the first part of 2014 in the North, Central and South areas of Taiwan. APT aims to complete the deployment by the end this year.

ZTE Wins Nigerian Railway Communications Contract

ZTE has won a contract to modernize the Nigerian railway. ZTE will work with the project contractor China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to provide communications systems in order to speed up the railway modernization in Nigeria. CCECC has been charged with building a double-track standard-gauge railway from Lagos in the south to Kano in the north of Nigeria. The total length of this railway is 1,315 kilometers. This will be the first standard railway constructed by a Chinese company in Nigeria, and will be the first modern railway in Nigeria. ZTE will provide information and communications system equipment and debugging and commissioning services for this project, ensuring the smooth operation of the modern railway.

Alcatel-Lucent Wins Indonesian Fibre Network Contract

Alcatel Lucent has won a contract from Telkom Akses the Telkom Indonesia subsidiary responsible for building a national broadband infrastructure for the delivery of fiber to the premises (FTTx) broadband service for millions of subscribers in Indonesia. Telkom Indonesia, through Telkom Akses, the responsibility for expanding the national broadband infrastructure to 15 million subscribers by 2015 as part of the TITO (Trade In Trade Off) Access Modernization Project which is replacing legacy copper cabling with optical fiber.

Apple Unveils CarPlay iPhone System

Apple has unveiled its new iPhone technology for cars at the Geneva Motor Show thatallows iPhones to plug into cars so drivers will be able to call up maps, make calls and request music with Siri voice commands or a touch on a vehicle’s dashboard screen. It requires Apple’s latest software, iOS 7 and an iPhone 5, 5C or 5S. Car producers including Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo previewed CarPlay in Geneva with other producers saying they are planning to adopt the system. Meanwhile Ford has already launched a voice-control system called Sync made by Microsoft in some of its cars and offers its own touch-screen technology.

Alcatel-Lucent Wins LTE Expansion Contract in the UAE

Alcatel Lucent has won a contract to expand Etisalat’s LTE coverage in the United Arab Emirates. The contract includes upgrading existing 3G, 2G infrastructure for future LTE service. The expanded network also paves the way for the introduction of advanced cloud services and evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS) in 2014, as well as supporting Etisalat’s Smart City and EXPO2020 initiatives.
