Movistar launches LTE

Movistar Chile has activated the nation’s second 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, with coverage of all regional capitals and using frequencies in the 2600MHz range. Supporting the launch, Movistar has begun offering 14 LTE-compatible smartphones, including Apple’s iPhone 5 range and handsets from Sony, Nokia, Samsung and BlackBerry.

At the launch ceremony the telco’s general manager Roberto Munoz commented that he expects data consumption to increase twenty-fold in the coming years, fuelled by high demand for mobile video services. In the two years leading up to the launch, Movistar invested USD1.25 billion in consolidating its 3G network, including the deployment of fibre and the cellco plans to invest a further USD200 million over the next three years.
