Huawei Sets Sights on 5G

Huawei Technologies has announced that it will invest USD600 million in researching fifth generation (5G) technologies over the next five years, following the revelation that China Mobile and Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) were extending their research and development (R&D) partnership to include 5G. Eric Xu, Huawei’s chief executive said:

‘While we continue to evolve our existing 4G network capabilities, we plan to invest a minimum of USD600 million over the next five years on research and innovation for 5G mobile network technologies to ensure that we are meeting consumers’ demands for increasingly faster and better connections.’

The figure does not include spending on 5G products. The vendor aims to have 5G technologies ready for commercial launch by 2020, and expects the new platform to offer download speeds 100 times faster than 4G systems.
