Google Releases Android OS for Wearable Devices

Google has announced an extension to its Android OS to allow the software to be used in so called wearable devices.

The company said it is starting with smartwatches, but expects to expand the software to a much wider range of consumer devices that can be worn.

The company also released a preview software platform for app developers that enable them to start porting their apps to work with smartwatches. The full SDK won’t be released until later this year though.

Google also confirmed that it is already working with several consumer electronics manufacturers, including Asus, HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung; chip makers Broadcom, Imagination, Intel, Mediatek and Qualcomm; and fashion brands like the Fossil Group to release watches powered by Android Wear later this year.
