Former HTC Execs Set Up New UK Based Smartphone Manufacturer

Two former HTC executives have announced plans to set up their own handset company, focusing initially at least on the European market.

HTC’s former head of sales, Michael Coombes and the former UK marketing director, James Atkins launched the new company, under the name of Kazam.

Coombes will serve as CEO, while Atkins takes up a position heading the marketing for the new company.

“There is a real opportunity for a new mobile brand to disrupt the status quo,” said Atkins at the launch. The company aims to differentiate itself by offering enhanced customer support, as opposed to just plain software updates.

“Kazam’s dynamic structure and focus on local markets means we can react quickly to the ever-evolving and diverging needs of today’s consumer,” Coombes said.

It is however not clear quite how they plan to launch handsets into a market dominated by sales through mobile network operators, or where they will be sourcing the handset assembly facilities from.

The company will be based in the UK.
