Entel, Movistar and Claro Receive 4G Licenses

Chilean telecoms regulator Sub-Secretaria de Telecomunicaciones (Subtel) has announced the allocation of three licenses for 700MHz frequencies to Entel, Movistar Chile and Claro Chile. Entel won the ‘B’ block with an offer of CLP6.88 billion (USD12.31 million), whilst Movistar paid CLP4.25 billion for the ‘A’ block and Claro was handed the ‘C’ block for payment of CLP404.2 million. Under the terms of the concession, the trio must deploy nationwide 4G networks within 24 months, and must have coverage of 1,281 remote regions, 503 schools and 13 roads (totaling around 854 km) within 18 months. The licenses also oblige the trio to open their networks to mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) and offer interconnection for national roaming.
