DRC Watchdog Stages Preliminary LTE License Consultation

The introduction of 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) licenses in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) could occur as early as 2014, after a preliminary consultation was initiated by Tryphon Kin Kiey Mulumba, the Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and New Technologies of Information and Communication on 19 December.

3G licenses were introduced in the DRC in July 2012, priced USD15 million apiece. Airtel DRC, Oasis Telecom (Tigo), Vodacom Congo and Africell all acquired a concession, while Orange (then Congo Chine Telecom [CCT]) had a 3G authorization included with its October 2011 license renewal.
