Uber Hires Veteran NASA Engineer to Develop Flying Cars

The ride-hailing company Uber, is planning to expand its flying car experiment. In this regard Uber has hired NASA engineer Mark Moore as Director of Engineering at Uber Elevate.

Mark Moore has worked at the federal agency as an advanced aircraft engineer. Basically, Moore started the current interest in vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft for short-haul urban flight with a 2010 paper on the workability of the helicopter-like vehicles.

According to Bloomberg, the appointment of Moore came right after the NASA expert deliberated on Uber’s recent white paper on VTOL craft. The engineer was fascinated by Uber’s work on the subject. Uber is serious about ensuing the tech, and will look to host a summit of those interested in the field. It will help coordinate efforts to get practical VTOL transit sometime early this year.

Worldwide revenues for IT products and services are forecast to reach nearly USD 2.4 trillion in 2017, an increase of 3.5 percent over 2016, according to a study by IDC. Researchers estimate that global IT spending will grow at a CAGR of 3.3 percent for the 2015-2020 forecast period to nearly USD 2.65 trillion in 2020.

Worldwide IT Spending to Go Up 3% Through 2020

Financial services and manufacturing will continue to drive industry spending on IT products and services, generating around 30 percent of all IT revenues throughout the forecast period. The telecommunications and professional services industries and the federal/central government are also forecast to be among the largest purchasers of IT products and services.

Professional services, healthcare, and banking will be the industries that will see the fastest spending growth over the forecast period. These will overtake discrete manufacturing in 2018 to become the second largest industry in terms of overall spending.

Meanwhile, more than 20 percent of all technology revenues will come from consumer purchases, but consumer spending will be nearly flat throughout the forecast (0.3 percent CAGR).

Planet Labs is one of several startups aiming to harness technology allowing satellites to become smaller and less expensive, making it easier to deploy large networks of satellites at less risk and lower cost than previously.
