BTRC to Offer 450MHz Mobile Spectrum
A special committee headed by a commissioner of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) will prepare a licensing guideline for 450MHz mobile frequency licences by November, with the aim of allocating the 450MHz band to cellcos after the 700MHz band is auctioned next year. Both lower frequency ranges are aimed at allowing mobile broadband network operators to deploy higher-performance services covering wider areas at a lower cost. BTRC chairman Sunil Kanti Bose said the regulator is working on recovering the unused spectrum in the 450MHz band from different entities, as some fixed line/fixed-wireless operators were previously allocated the band. The regulator recently refused state-runPSTN operator Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Ltd (BTCL) an allocation in the 450MHz band in favour of reserving it for mobile companies. Bose also noted that the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) will release updated official guidelines on 450MHz utilization worldwide next year.
