BASE Inaugurates LTE Network in 15 Cities

Belgium’s smallest cellco by subscribers, BASE Company, has announced the launch of commercial 4G services in 15 of the country’s large- and medium-sized cities, with those being: Aalst, Antwerp, Beveren, Bruges, Charleroi, Genk, Ghent, Hasselt, Kortrijk, Leuven, Liege, Mechelen, Namur, Ostend and Sint-Truiden. Looking ahead the cellco said it expects to expand the coverage area quickly.

In terms of access for its existing customers, BASE noted that any customer with a 4G-compatible smartphone who was located in one of the launch cities and who had a bundle that included 4G could take advantage of the increased downlink speeds immediately. For residential customers, the five of the cellco’s existing plans – ‘B-39’, ‘B-49’, ‘B-59’, ‘BASE Check 35’ and ‘Internet Anywhere 30’ – allow customers to access the LTE network immediately. Business mobile subscribers signed up to the ‘Pro Talk’, ‘Pro Leader’, ‘Pro Leader +’, ‘Pro Leader EU’ and ‘Internet Anywhere 28’ will also benefit from the higher download rates without having to do anything.

Commenting on the development, BASE Company CEO Jos Donvil said:

Rolling out 4G is necessary in order to meet the new needs of our customers. In recent years we’ve seen the number of smartphones and the data usage on these devices skyrocket. Customers use their mobile phones for much more than just calling and sending text messages, and that evolution is continuing.’
