Amazon Shows Off New Kindle Tablets

Amazon has shown off three new Kindle tablets — the Kindle Fire HD, the Kindle Fire HDX 7, and Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 — and a new OS for its devices.

The new software, Fire OS 3.0 “Mojito,” powers the Kindle Fire tablets with Android app compatibility, although apps can only be downloaded from Amazon’s own app store.

Fire OS 3.0 will be available exclusively on the new Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HDX.

The HDX models come with the Snapdragon 800 processor running at 2.2 GHz provides over 3x the processing power compared to the previous generation. The tablets also weigh about a third less than the previous models.

A front-facing HD camera works with the Skype VoIP app, plus there is a new 8 megapixel wide- aperture rear-facing camera on the 8.9″ Fire HDX.

The newly designed 7-inch Kindle Fire HD starts at US$139 with 16GB of storage and sales start next week.

The HDX 7 sells for US$229, or US$329 with LTE, while the Fire HDX 8.9 will start at $379.
