Aftel launches GSM, 3G services

State-backed telco Afghan Telecom (Aftel) has inaugurated GSM and 3G services in Kabul, and intends to expand the service to ten provinces by the end of the week, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) announced. The company has invested USD65 million on the deployment and intends to spend a further USD100 million to expand the service nationwide. Aftel’s 3G services are sold under the ‘SALAM’ brand, with data charged at AFN250 (USD4.37) for 1GB, AFN600 for 3GB or AFN900 for 5GB whilst calls cost AFN0.04 per second.
